The San Saba County Commissioners Court met Monday, May 24th in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone . Commissioner Kenley Kroll gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. County Sheriff Allen Brown introduced the new deputy in training, James Barrows.

The Baptist Church recently had a ice cream supper for the Seniors. The Church of Christ hosted a dinner for the graduating Seniors last Sunday evening. Each graduate was presented with a bible. The 100-year celebration at the Bend Methodist church had a big turn out Sunday. It was reported that more than 110 people attended the affair and that some of the direct descendants of the founders of the church attended. Gage’s Bar-B-Q catered the lunch. The cake had a picture of the original church building and the present church building.

It is given to men and women who have served in the military and exhibited valor beyond the call of duty. Captain Ed W. Freeman in the US Army Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion was one of those persons. He fought in Korea and took part in the bloody battle of Pork Chop Hill.

Another busy week has bitten the dust! I think students and teachers are hanging on by a thread. Insanity reigns all around us but we are standing strong! High school students are struggling with the absence of Mrs. Hall. Mrs. Hall went in for what she thought would be minor shoulder surgery, and instead had major work done which put her out for the rest of the school year.

Dear Editor: It has been my privilege to be The San Saba All Sports Booster Club President for the past 2 years. It has been a joy to work with and for the student athletes of San Saba. They are great kids that work very hard to represent our community. My term is ending and the booster club will need a new president for the 2010-2011 school year.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced the state collected $1.68 billion in sales tax revenue in April, up 1.4 percent compared to April 2009. "This modest increase is welcome after 14 consecutive months of year-over-year declines," Combs said. "Retail trade saw a nearly 5 percent increase in collections, and gains also occurred in the manufacturing sector.

Recently, a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that women who are physically active during middle age are more likely to have a healthy mind and body at age 70. Skin cancer accounts for roughly half of all reported cancer cases in the US. Non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are the most common forms of skin cancer, while melanoma is the most serious type. Though skin cancer can be dangerous or even deadly, it can often be prevented or successfully treated if detected in time. Anyone can develop skin cancer, regardless of race or skin tone.

Receipts totaled 1656 head for the week. The market remains very active and strong but there is a drop in the market on new crop calves that are coming to town in a fleshy condition. Feeder steers sold $3 to $4 lower while feeder heifers were $5 lower. Stocker steers and heifers sold steady to $3 lower.

This year’s Llano County Beef & Range Field Day is set for Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The Science Fair at San Saba Elementary was a huge success! The displays were some of the best we have ever seen, and the enthusiasm was catching. The overall entry winner was 4th grader Joshua Lambert. Judging for the overall entry was based on creativity, display, and oral presentation of information.

The 4-H Vet Science Project is enrolling new members till June 10th. Youth enrolled in the project will meet twice in June and July and once in August. They will learn about handling and restraining animals this summer. Activities will be planned to go along with the written information. On May 18th, 2010, Jesika Rae Seale joined 234 Seniors for a Senior Awards Ceremony. She was 25th in honors. There will be a Junior Tennis League this summer sponsored by the San Saba Tennis Association. There will also be several tennis clinics given by Coach Cox. The 2010 Texas Reading Club, Reading Express, provides opportunities for children ages 5 through 12 to enjoy reading. It begins on June 2, 2010 from 1:00 to 2 p.m. at the Rylander Memorial Library. This free program, sponsored by the Friends of Rylander Library and LCRA Employees United Charities, will continue on June 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.

The 2009-2010 Sports banquet was held this past Thursday, May 20th, at the San Saba Civic Center. This event is put on by the San Saba All- Sports Booster Club. All 133 San Saba athletes were recognized and honored, along with the 15 sports and 24 teams that make up San Saba HS athletics.

May 24, 2010 - What a great year we have had at San Saba ISD. Each and every campus has had its own successes that can be noted and celebrated. Students are achieving and the District is moving forward in its quest to be the School of Choice in Central Texas. Troy High School senior Brittany Ellis has won the Texas High School Rodeo Association Region X All-Around Cowgirl title for 2010. Ellis finished as the Region barrel racing champion, reserve champion in pole bending, third place in girl's cutting, 6th place in goat tying and 13th place in breakaway roping.
