If you’ve ever thought you’d like to volunteer with San Saba’s EMS but resisted because you thought (A) the training would be too hard or take too long, (B) volunteering would take too much time or (C) someone else could do it better than you, listen up! We need ambulance drivers and driving is one of the best volunteer jobs we have. As an EMS volunteer, you’ll get the satisfaction of doing something that really makes a difference.

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met on May 10th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. Vice President Marcie Maxcey called the meeting to order followed by everyone repeating the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Board member Bob Whitten gave the invocation. The Student of the Month for May at the Middle School is Joely Haverland.

The San Saba High School Alumni Association will hold its fifth Annual Meeting at the High School Cafeteria on Saturday, May 15th at 10:30 AM. The meeting will include reports from several committees as well as the election of directors and officers. The meeting will be followed by a luncheon with food provided by the Association.

Sunday, June 6, 2010 is National Cancer Survivors Day. On Friday, June 4, 2010, the San Saba Senior Center will host its 2nd annual luncheon and reception from 1:00-3:00 p.m. co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The Center is in need of food donations such as salads, desserts or appetizers.

The San Saba County Commissioner's Court met at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 10th in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order. Commissioner Roger McGehee gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the Texas and American flags. Cory Evans, Manager of the Colorado Bend State Park gave a video presentation.

San Saba County 4-H will be holding a dog dip/rabies clinic on Saturday, May 22nd at the Centex Fertilizer on Highway 190 East of Richland Springs from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Charles Key, DVM with San Saba Animal Hospital will provide the rabies shots. The shots will be $12.00.

Carly Simon had a song out years ago that stated in part, "You’re so vain…" In Mac-millan’s Dictionary vain is described as, "overly or excessively preoccupied with or proud of one’s appearance, abilities, or accomplishments; conceited." This definition tells us what it means to be vain. I believe this as we look at people today.

We have had no rain this past week, but with the warm temperatures, the gardens are really growing. I can’t wait for all those fresh vegetables. Brad Shannon had some excitement out at his place just north of town last week. A bobcat came into his yard and jumped on his dogs.

It has changed so much in my lifetime from where daddy was the breadwinner and mommy took care of the home. Today many dads have two or three jobs and work long hours like 9 to 5. They do not go to work at 9, that is when they get home at night and they leave for work at 5 in the morning.

Hope all the mothers had a wonderful day Sunday. There was a crowd of folks all over Lampasas Sunday. All of the eating places were packed and over flowing with folks who were taking their wife or mothers out for lunch. There was a host of mothers who celebrated the day by not having to cook. Lola Morris enjoyed her day by having lunch at the home of her son and his family.

We’re getting lots of gusty spring winds these days, but the rains are not forthcoming! My garden is growing up a storm, but I’m having to water to keep the growth steady. The tomatoes are up about two feet tall. I did what Candi told me to do and snipped off the flowers.

The Cherokee ladies have invited us to come to their new Youth and Activity Center next Thursday, May 20th, beginning at 11:30 a.m. for the May Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon. Lana Luise Thomas is currently a sophomore at Oklahoma City University studying the dance and the entertainment business industry as a dance management major. This is her second year at Oklahoma City University, and has so far participated in OCU’s American Spirit Dance Company, Liturgical Dance Company, and as a costumer and stage runner backstage of the American Spirit Dance shows.

On May 15 at 6 p.m. the Pecan Valley Chapter of the Red Cross will be hosting a Bunco Tournament at the VFW Hall on Memory Lane in Brady. Cost to play is $10 and refreshments will be served. Prizes have been donated by local merchants and individuals; there will be at least a dozen winners.

The San Saba County Historical Commission is pleased to announce a special sale on Vol. II, San Saba County History 1856-2001. The book is dedicated to the pioneer families of San Saba County and their descendants. The book was published in 2002. It contains family histories, county activities, events and memorials honoring county residents.

The San Saba Garden Club met Tuesday, May 4th at the Mill Pond Clubhouse. Anna Wilson welcomed twenty clubmembers and one guest, Joanne Weik. Carol Orr led the Collect and Trish Warren led the Creed. After the treasurers report, Anna expressed appreciation to Carol Littlefield and Jane Randolph for their leadership in the lasagne dinner fundraiser last month and to all the clubmembers for the wonderful participation in baking and serving that day.

The annual Heart of Texas Cow/Calf Clinic will be held Tuesday evening May 25, 2010. It will be held at the Brown County Fairgrounds, located on highway 377 South, towards Brady. The Cow/Calf Clinic will start at 5:30 p.m. with a catered Bar-B-Q meal. Beef Cattle production is the number one ag enterprise in Brown and most other surrounding counties.

Seems as if our weather in the fair Valley of the Pecan cannot quite make up it’s mind if we’re still in Spring time or going into summer. Here we are only in mid-May and having some temps. up in the 90’s this past week. I liked the days of the weekend better when it would start out in the high 50’s and get up to about 72 in the afternoon.

James Elton Bennett passed away April 30, 2010 at the age of 87. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday May 3, 2010 at Fort Stockton Church of Christ, Harold Durham and Felix Kneuper officiating. Burial followed at East Hill Cemetery. Kenneth (Skeez) Eikam, 83, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010, at his residence in San Saba County, Texas. Kenneth was born December 17, 1926, in Sheridan, Oregon, to Henry Eikam and Ruby Hearn Eikam. Kenneth was a truck driver and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Leann Eikam; his niece, Cathy Sawyer; and his nephew, Mike Fitzgerald. Lois Nolan Freeman, aged 97, died Saturday April 10th. Lois grew up and lived most of her life in Corsicana, but her last years were spent in San Saba. Lois, a generous and caring soul, joins her late husband Elma, sisters Laura and Lillie and brother Lawrence. She will be missed.

Marie Ledbetter Clark, 76, died peacefully in her Fairborn, Ohio home on Friday, January 8, 2010 after nearly a 10 year fight against Multiple Myeloma. She was born in Austin, Texas on November 22, 1933, the daughter of the late Wade O’Brian and Willie Belle Ledbetter. Marie graduated from San Saba High School in 1950, received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from Antioch University and graduated from the Air Command & Staff College.

Nancy Antoinette (Landers) Berryhill passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, in San Saba, Texas. She was a loving daughter, wife, and mother who spent her life in service to God, family, and others. Nancy was born in the Panama Canal Zone September 27, 1926, to J. D. and Rosalie (Little) Landers.

Laverne Murry, whose formal name was Opal Laverne Murry, was born June 3, 1914, in Canton, Texas. Laverne married Chester Harris on August 11, 1934, and they had one son, Grady Lynn Harris, who was born on her birthday, June 3, 1948. Chester Harris died in 1969. She remarried in January 1989, to Bill Murry in Corsicana, Texas, and he preceded her in death on March 20, 1995. This years BCIS II class has been doing various fundraisers around the community and school to buy a new mascot uniform and to resurface the tennis courts for San Saba High School. The fundraising began with raffling off a signed basketball, selling parking spots, a coin drive, the purple potty, cap week, and a hamburger sale put on by the drill team and cheerleaders.

Last Friday and Saturday, May 7th and 8th, the San Saba Armadillo varsity baseball team was playing in the Bi-District round of the Texas 2A State Baseball Playoffs. This is the third year in a row that the baseball program has received such an honor. The action got started right here in San Saba last Friday as we hosted the first baseball playoff game that anyone we spoke with could remember.

San Saba student athletes may get free physicals for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year at One Source Clinic. These are going to be provided from 2:30-5:30 on Wednesday May 19th. All in coming 7th, 9th and 11th grade students must have a current physical and all paper work on file to participate in UIL athletics. All athletes must have the paper work on file to participate.

Dennis Harbin, son of Donna Harbin of Richland Springs, recently participated in Coryell County’s 3-D Invitational Archery Tournament. The tournament had 30 targets placed over a mile and a half. Harbin received a participant medal. He has been participating in the 4-H archery project for the past six months.

Last Sunday we ventured west to Odessa on a four hour voyage. Oh for the days of travel to Abilene to ACU. Maybe Coach Pannell and Mrs. Glaze could work on this for us in the future. On the girl’s side we took three athletes to Odessa. Haylee Oliver competed in the high jump and polevault.

The Rotary Club of San Saba will be hosting their 28th annual Honor Student Banquet, Monday evening, May 17th. The banquet, held at the Civic Center in Mill Pond Park, will begin at 6:30 p.m. The banquet recognizes every high school student in the three county high schools that have maintained a 90 or better grade point average for this academic year.

On Monday and Tuesday May 3rd and 4th, Hayden Oliver, Wil Sloan, Luis Vega, and Allan Hale competed in the regional track meet in Odessa. Both young men ended up 14th in their races. Hayden and Allan competed in the 100 meter dash , Wil Sloan com peted in the shot put and Luis Vega competed in the triple jump.

District 7 4-H recently held a photography contest along with their 4-H Round-up. Three San Saba County youth participated in the contest. They were Jordan and Jacey Gossett, daughters of Casey and Sally Gossett and Mykah McKinnerney, daughter of Michael and Jennifer Mc-Kinnerney. May 10, 2010 - Summer is coming upon us quickly. Students are anxious to get the 2009-2010 school year completed and have some much needed time off. Teachers and school staff are looking forward to some days off this summer too, but contrary to the old belief teachers/school staff do not take the entire summer off.
