On April 8th, the Richland Springs One Act Play participated in the AREA contest at Brownwood High School with former high school teacher at Graham, Jack Cody, serving as the judge. RSHS performed their ninth performance of the play, Close Ties by Elizabeth Diggs. Haustin Burkhart, who played Thayer, received an Honorable Mention medal as did Sara Hedley, who played the mother, Bess Frye.

The San Saba Tennis Team has been very busy since April 1st. On April 1-3 the tennis team played in the Mason Tournament. Tayler Hibler won second place in girls singles. In mixed doubles, Nicole Sears and Chase Key defeated a team from Marble Falls to win third place. Lauren Dawson and Reid Casco almost had the upset of the tournament as they took last years state qualifiers from Sonora to 3 sets before losing.

On April 16th at 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. on April 17th, the Relay for Life of San Saba County will have its annual walk to fight against cancer. The event is to be held at Risien Park. Because cancer never sleeps, the walk will continue all night. The theme of the 2010 Relay for Life is "United We Stand Against Cancer."

"Life is a Treasure" is the theme for the 2nd Quarter San Saba County/Scott & White Blood Drive. It will be held on Tuesday, April 20th from 1-6 p.m. at the San Saba County Courthouse. All April donors will receive: a blood donor t-shirt, a free pirate squeezie, and the chance to win one of three packages for two nights (with free breakfast) from the Hilton Garden Inn in Temple. EACH INDIVIDUAL AND ENTITY who received 2009 payments or who requests 2010 payments with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) or Natural Resource and Conservation Service (NRCS) must complete a consent form and provide it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) so compliance with adjusted gross income (AGI) requirements can be verified. We can live for several weeks without food but we can only live a few days without water. More than half the body’s weight is water. Water is one of those important nutrients for maintaining good health. Yet we often forget to drink it. Water deprivation kills faster than the lack of any other nutrient. Why do we need water? Water regulates body temperature.

Jay Parr has been moved to Scott and White Care Center in Temple. Hopefully he will be home soon. The Relay for Life Fish Fry was a big success last Friday night. I have never seen the countryside any prettier than it is this year. It is so green and the bluebonnets are out in abundance. The drive down FM 765 is something to see. Just east of the fire station in Elm Grove there is a huge flower bed mixed with blue, pink and yellow flowers.

Anita Miles wins second low net in the second flight of the Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Association of Texas tournament held in Corpus Christi, Texas April 7-8, 2010! This was her fourth win in the Senior Women’s tournament and the ladies were all thrilled to have a winner! She was awarded the coveted silver medallion at the awards banquet. Four ladies, Jo Ann Snow, Hattie Rogers, Sandee Hartley, and Anita Miles, all attended the two day event.

He lived a life of sinless perfection in order to become a perfect sacrifice. Saturday and Sunday was really a strange couple of days. It was overcast both days and Sunday it looked like it was going to rain, but all that it did was a light mist fell and that was just in spots. It is getting dry and rain is needed. There is a chance of rain Thursday and Friday if it comes up this far from the gulf.

Spring, Spring beautiful Spring, I just love Spring. I was being fanciful on the way to church this morning. Winter brings out all the ugly, nothing is hidden from sight, but spring; all the ugly gets a new chance, and everything looks fresh and new. Mind you, winter is always a surprise.

George L Epperson was honored with a Texas Ranger Memorial Cross, Saturday, April 10, 2010. The Dedication Ceremony took place at his gravesite in the Valley Spring Cemetery. George L. Epperson was born in Arkansas, September 15, 1851. He came to Texas with his family in 1855. They settled on Johnson Creek near Valley Spring.

The Cowboy Cemetery Association of McCullough County will hold their annual meeting and workday at the cemetery on Saturday, April 17th, 2010. The Historic Cowboy Cemetery was established in 1885 and depends on volunteers to help with the clean up of the cemetery. Members are asked to bring their own tools and to wear work clothes.

Attending were Mary Jane Dennis, Fran Hulgan, Louise Oswald, Martha Roe Terry, Lucy Wilson and County Extension Agent Carolyn McDowell. On Wednesday, April 7th, at 9:30 a.m. it was a beautiful day to celebrate something very important. The entire San Saba High School student body participated in "Go Blue Day" at the practice field. There were gatherings all over the state of Texas having similar assemblies to recognize April as "Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month."

The Masonic Bodies of Order of Eastern Star (OES), San Saba Scottish Rite Club and San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612, will hold their annual Fish Fry-Bake Sale on Thursday, April 22nd. The teams participating in the San Saba County Relay for Life were asked to provide at least one item for a silent auction as another way to raise monies for the American Cancer Society. They were succesful in getting lots of great items for your bidding thanks to the generosity of many local businesses and their team members. These items will be on display at the Arrowhead Bank beginning Thursday, April 1st through April 15th.

They gather together in remembrance of their fellow Aggies who have passed away within the last year. The San Saba Garden Club gathered April 6th at the Mill Pond Clubhouse with many beautiful irises in hand and were placed on a special table. Some of these blooms were the result of our iris exchange last fall. Our president, Anna Wilson called us to order, welcoming members and a guest, Kathleen Hawkins. Jane Randolph led the Club Collect and Clione Rochat led our Club Creed.

Receipts totaled 1501 head for Thursday. The market continues to move higher with demand very strong with stocker steers selling $2 to $3 higher and stocker heifers bringing $3 to $7 higher. Feeder steers were $3 higher and heifers were $3 to $5 higher. The San Saba County Pecan Growers will host the annual Pecan Field Day on Monday May 3rd at the Civic Center. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be a $20.00 registration fee for those who call in and pre-register. Wallace Hawkins, 76, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas. Wallace was born on September 22, 1933, at the Wallace Creek Community in San Saba County to Oscar and Beatrice Hawkins. The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met on Monday, April 12th at 6 p.m. in the Central Office. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order, recognized a quorum and gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. April 12, 2010 - School is beginning to look very different from the way it was delivered and the courses that were taken when many of us were in school. Kiddos now, have the opportunity to take courses over the internet, by video conferencing from another school district or college, they can take college courses delivered by our own teachers, or they can take career and technology courses that include wind technology, allied health, or culinary arts.

The Lady Dillos were on the road for both games last week. On Tuesday, we traveled to Bangs, and on Friday we traveled to Brady. Tuesday’s game against Bangs was a nail biter. Bangs jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning on a homerun. The Lady Dillos clamped down and didn’t allow another run.

San Saba High School Students participated in the Conf. 2A District 8 UIL Academic Meet in Bangs on Monday, 3/22 and Thursday, 3/25. The day started out nice, but as the sun went down, the temperature did also. The Jr. High Lady Dillos did a good job, but were severly outnumbered by other district schools. Our participation was great as there were only six girls in Jr. High who did not participate in track. The 7th Girls finished 4th with 96.5 points and the 8th finished 5th one-half point behind Comanche with58.5 points.

A Tale of Two Games - On Tuesday, April 6, the San Saba JV baseball team went over to Bangs for a district game. The Armadillos scored first with 3 runs being knocked in by Russell Lowe and Josh Wright. Bangs answered right back, capitalizing on a couple of errors to even the game, 3 – 3.

The Middle School Boys Dillos competed in the District Meet in Comanche last Thursday. They had a good track meet. The 8th grade boys finished 6th place, and the 7th grade boys finished 2nd place. This week the Dillo Baseball teams won 2 games putting us in 2nd place. On Tuesday we beat Coleman 5-3 and on Thursday we beat Dublin 11-9. Cody Herd, Clayton Perry and Ryan Pannell provided the pitching with Ryan Parks, Pannell, Luke Cox, Herd, Tucker Cromer, Migel Flores, Tanner Weyerts, Perry, Zack Davis, Chance Gotcher, Isaac Jimenez, Hayden Oliver, and Jose Olivas providing the run support and defense.
