These three San Saba Armadillos received awards from the Texas Sports Writer’s Association. Making the All-State team was Senior Tyler McIntosh, who made 3rd team offensive line. Senior Anthony Salinas received honorable mention for the defensive line and Junior Tucker Cromer received honorable mention for linebacker. Anthony plans to play at Cisco Jr.

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met for a regular meeting on Monday, February 8th at 7 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order and gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Randy Henderson, San Saba County Appraisal District, reported the Appraisal District had received a report from the State of Texas that shows a higher property value than the County records.

Mike Cox, who has authored five books about the Texas Rangers, is coming to San Saba on Monday, February 22nd. He will speak at the Rylander Memorial Library beginning at 2:00 P.M. and then have a book signing. Mike’s latest work, "The Time of the Rangers: The Texas Rangers, 1900 to Present,"

We have had more winter weather this past week. It has been rainy and cold with a hard freeze predicted for tonight (Monday). We were sorry to hear of the passing of Rusty McPherson last week. We send our sympathy to his family. We were so shocked Sunday afternoon to hear of the passing of our friend, Wilma Lee.

Valentine’s Day started out really nice at noon the temperature was in the high 60’s and by 1:00 p.m. the dark clouds started forming and by 2:00 p.m. the temp had dropped down to the 40’s and with the wind it seemed colder than that. The Olympics are in full swing, and I’m loving the action! I have a ton of cousins in Vancouver. I hope they are enjoying the games in person. Like other Canadians, I was sweating the lack of snow. Vancouver is not known for snow. Mind you, once you get into the mountains there is plenty of snow.

The Bend-Chappel Extension Education Club meeting was held Monday, February 8, 2010 with president Mary Jane Dennis presiding. Everyone welcomed new member Shannon Evans. Andrea Beth Pesek was born on January 30, 2010 at 10:55 am at Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas. She weighed 6 lbs. 14 oz. and was 20 inches long. Her parents are Jason and Katie Pesek (formerly Katie Crenwelge of San Saba, Texas) of Fredericksburg, Texas. She has one sister, Cecilie Pesek, who is 2 years old. Ladies of the First Presbyterian Church of San Saba invite the ladies of the county to the Fellowship of Christian Women's Luncheon to be held February 25th. The luncheon will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall at 11:30 a.m. Ladies in their eighties and up will be treated and everyone else is asked to bring a covered dish to share around the serving tables as fellowship is enjoyed. Area local pageant queen Janene Alcalar, age five, was recently filmed by TLC Toddlers and Tiaras and will air on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 9 p.m. on TLC. The episode will show Janene preparing for the Universal Royalty Nationals in Austin, Texas. Our resident's hearts were full of love as they celebrated Valentine's Day on Friday! The dining room was packed with residents, as well as some family members, and was decked out with festive decor, as they listened to love songs from the 40's and 50's era, as they ate their bright pink cupcakes with lots of sprinkles and had red punch! The 5th/6th grade Dillos have gotten off to a 6-0 start in the 2010 basketball season. Team members include Yason Aguirre, Brendon Bush, Wyatt Deans, Carter Eden, John Faught, Logan Guidroz, Holt Oliver, and John Welch. On Tuesday, February 9th the Armadillos traveled to Coleman. The Armadillo came out on top, but not before making it a little too exciting for me. The Dillos opened up the first quarter taking the lead 13-9 with three field goals by Ryan Pannell and three by Tucker Cromer. The Dillos increased their lead in the second quarter 29-19 with field goals by Clayton Perry, Braden McBee, Chance Gotcher, Ryan Pannell Tucker Cromer and one 3 pointer by Luke Cox.

The District 29 champion Richland Springs Coyotes (16-1, 11-0) secured the top seed from the district and a bye into the area round of the playoffs with Friday’s 56-41 victory over the Eden Bulldogs. The Coyotes played their last district game at Richland Springs gym at 6:30 this past Tuesday.

Catherine Hodge and Ashley Pruitt, both sophomores at San Saba High School sold the most boxes of candy during the sophomore class fundraiser. Both girls worked very hard and sold seven boxes a piece. They were rewarded with Sonic cards. Thanks to everyone who bought candy and supported us!

The San Saba Lady Dillos went one and one in hoops play last week. We ended up District with a big win over Coleman and then lost our tie breaker game with Early. We will represent the District as the #2 seed. When this article comes out we will have played Jim Ned in Bi-District.

On Saturday the Boys and Girls Power lifting Teams competed in Brady. Most of our lifters had their best total of the year at this meet and they should be commended for their performances. This was an extremely competitive meet and our kids competed really well and for that we are proud of them.

The San Saba Tennis Team had a very busy weekend on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13. On Friday February 12 the tennis team traveled to Llano to play in the Llano Invitational Tennis Tournament. On Saturday February 13th the tennis team played Killeen Ellison and Copperas Cove. In the Llano Tournament the tennis team came in second place as a team behind Faith Academy on Marble Falls.

Shelby Hardy was named to the Dean’s List at Sam Houston State University for the 2009 Fall semester with a 3.76 GPA. To be named to the Dean’s List at Sam Houston State, a student must earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.50 while carrying a class load of at least 12 semester hours.

The calf scramble was held Tuesday, February 9 at the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo. 4-H and FFA youth competed for $800 certificates to purchase breeding animals to exhibit in the 2010 San Antonio Junior Livestock Show. Twelve certificates were awarded last night to those who caught a calf. The first place winner was awarded a Platinum scholarship worth $1,000. The platinum winner was Stephen Thornhill of Richland Springs, Texas.
