The San Saba City Council met for a Regular Meeting on Monday, February 8th at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order. Councilman Charlie Peeler gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Scott Glaze, Public Works Director, presented the Employee of the Month Award to Luis Rios.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met Monday, February 8th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis welcomed everyone and acknowledged citizen Harold Yates attending the session. Roger McGehee gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Mr. Yates looked over the agenda and acknowledged that he supported the San Saba County Historical Society’s formation to be a nonprofit Corporation.

In his State of the Union speech, the President promised that the Administration would begin leading the way toward restoring fiscal discipline and reducing the size of the mounting and unsustainable debt we are accumulating. But unfortunately when he released his first budget earlier this month, the $3.83 trillion price tag did not deliver on that pledge.

I was talking to my uncle today and he was telling me about the horse he bought recently, a "reining" horse—something I had not heard of previously. As is my habit, I Googled reining and learned that it is a competitive sport not too far removed from cutting horses or dressage.

It looks like the rain and cold weather is here to stay for a little while longer. An additional inch of rain fell this past week and Sunday light drizzle fell off and on. Monday the rain came down once again with the promise of more rain and possible sleet.

The busy season is here once again. It seems as if fourteen different things are simultaneously occurring! One act play is perfecting their UIL offering. Basketball teams are winding down the district play. Both boys and girls teams are doing very well! Tennis is mostly on hold due to both of those activities.

There was a lot of talk going on about which team was the best or who was going to win and every one was picking a team. We went over to some friend’s house to watch the game. Both teams fought very hard and it looked like either team could win.

High-definition television (HDTV) is making its way from the living room to the hospital room. Now, Brownwood Regional Medical Center is among the first hospitals in Central Texas to introduce the technology as part of a new endoscope platform to help doctors diagnose diseases in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs today announced the state will use approximately $23 million in federal stimulus funds for a mail-in rebate program for consumers who purchase certain energy efficient household appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy approved the rebates for consumers who buy eligible Energy Star appliances and replace the same type of old appliance that’s functional.

A Travis County judge Monday dismissed a $1.23 billion lawsuit filed against the Lower Colorado River Authority by the City of San Antonio. State District Judge Stephen Yelenosky ruled in favor of LCRA and against the San Antonio Water System. San Antonio had requested that the discussion of whether its suit was valid be delayed while it developed more legal information and depositions.

The Kerrville Performing Arts Society (KPAS) is pleased to announce its annual KPAS Performing Arts Scholarship Auditions for 2010. It would be safe to say that most of the intros. to "Highlights" the past several weeks have probably been relating to aspects of the weather, being cold, wet, or both. Willis Ray (Rusty) McPherson passed away on February 8, 2010, in Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Rusty McPherson was born in Bell County, Texas, to Samuel Grant and Ruby (Cooper) McPherson on March 27, 1933. He married Reba June Brodie on June 24, 1955, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Armadillos had an open date Tuesday, Feb. 2 and then hosted the Comanche Indians Friday, Feb. 5. The Indians came into this game with a district record of 7-2 and one game out of the lead behind Brady. Comanche jumped out to a 23-15 lead in the first quarter.

The local Cub Scouts of Troop 55 had an exciting day on Saturday February 6, 2010 as they met at the First United Methodist Church to race their pinewood derby cars! Much anticipation and enthusiasm was evident in the boys and their families as they could hardly wait to submit their handcrafted, painted, and polished works of art for the big race of the day.

On Saturday, the San Saba High School Power lifting team competed in the Hamilton meet. The San Saba Boys team finished third out of 11 teams. Several of our lifters received medals. We had a really good showing in the boys division and we had several lifters gain some valuable experience.

The San Saba Junior Lady Dillos (4-1) opened up the 2010 season with a triple header at Llano on January 30. Team members include 6th graders Micah Cox, Katy Ingram, McKenzie McBee, Maddie Nettleship, Alexus Saldivar, and 5th graders Raley Kirk, Kimeri Moore, Raylee Pannell, Bailie Santeufemia and Saveria Vasquez.

The San Saba Lady Dillos clinched a playoff spot last Friday night as they downed the Comanche Maidens by a score of 54-48. All I know at this point is that we’re in the playoffs but we don’t know who we’ll play or where. Against Comanche we came out and really played well in the first half.

We want to thank the First United Methodist Church for the use of their facilities for pinewood derby race day held on February 6th! Race day was very exciting and enjoyable by the Cub Scouts and the many family members who were in attendance. The San Saba Tennis Team finally were able to get on the courts and play a match after their first three scheduled matches were rained out. On Friday afternoon, February 5th, the Dillos hosted Liberty Hill in a dual match. San Saba defeated Liberty Hill 13 to 10. The Armadillos were without nine of their varsity players due to other activities going on.

Stephen Fowler, an 11th grade student at Richland Springs High School, received 1st place in an essay contest – "How Telecommunications Has Impacted My Life in Rural Texas" - sponsored each year by Central Texas Telephone Cooperative, Inc.
