San Saba has been blessed with a very light influenza season so far, and the H1N1 influenza ("swine flu") has not been as wide spread as feared. Much of the credit for this goes to our citizens who took the warnings to heart such as attention to hand washing, covering their coughing/sneezing, and the hundreds who took advantage of the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines. Nonetheless, there continues to be a risk for influenza - both seasonal and H1N1, especially during this part of winter ...

The employees were standing around talking one day and making fun of their supervisor. One of them especially was imitating his mannerisms and speech. What he did not know was that his supervisor was standing behind him, listening to his words. Have you ever done this? Have you ever imitated another person?

We had some rain last week. We received about 1/2 inch and the ground was pretty muddy. My rain spotter out in Elm Grove reports that we registered 23.3 inches for 2009. For the first part of January we had record low temperatures and now they are record highs. That is Texas weather for you. There were only five members present at the Busy Bee quilting last Tuesday.

Reading Recommendations: My Life in France, Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme Julia Child single handedly awakened America to the pleasures of good cooking with her cookbook Mastering The Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef, but as she reveals in this best selling memoir, she didn't know the first thing about cooking when she landed in France. Indeed, when she first arrived in France in 1948 with her husband, Paul, she spoke no French and knew nothing ...

Wonder if yall are having as much trouble still writing the "10" on checks & bills as much as some of us. You know one thing for sure; just about time we get used to something, they seem to change it. Guess it might have something to do with advancing age.

Jumping horney toads, has it been busy. If this is a sign of things to come in 2010, man am I already looking forward to 2011. Since the first of the year everyone has been busy. We have seen an increase in cases all the way across the board, we are pushing toward the end of the construction at the jail, transports of prisoners seem to be everyday and district court had the largest docket I have ever seen.

A sign on a wrecked car amused me. Above the bent fender were the words: "My wife did it." And that's what Adam said. In order to excuse himself, he had only the woman, the serpent, and the Lord. So he said, "The woman." But today we have family, society or poverty. But God puts the blame where it belongs-on the sinner. With Him there's only one way to find forgiveness.

You can not really tell the real nature of a dog when he is sleeping. Over the years I have walked up to many yard fences or knocked on many a door and I have learned to look very carefully to see if there is a dog there. There may be and he may be sleeping very peacefully but you go in the yard and halfway to the front door the dog awakens and that sleeping dog becomes a roaring, snarling lion and it is getting harder for me to run like a speeding train or leap over yard fences.

I keep trying to type in 2009. I think it’s because 2009 went by so quickly that I’m sure we dropped a month or two along the way to 2010. I’ve always heard that the older you get the more quickly the years go by, but this is just too ridiculous! My sister Dee and Brother-in-law Dave are getting better weather now that our cold snap has passed by and returned to the North where it belongs.

Dear Editor, It is almost time to vote. But where are we going to vote? You may lose the luxury of having your polling place near you. A lack of interest in volunteers, in both parties, to man the polling places may necessitate the closing of these respective boxes. You may have to drive 16 or 17 miles to vote. The county chairs have stringent rules from the Secretary of State and their respective political party headquarters as how to hold an election.

On January 12, the Armadillos traveled to Comanche for another 8-AA district game. The Indians were undefeated in district play at the time of this game and they still are. Comanche has a very good team this year and I knew it would be a tough challenge for us, but as always, our kids showed up and gave their best effort. Comanche is a pressing, fast paced team, and it wasn’t any different when they played us.

The San Saba Lady Dillos captured two wins last week as they downed the Comanche Maidens and the Coleman Bluekatts. This ended the first half of play and we’re currently one game up on Bangs and two on Early. I had an idea that the Comanche game would be a struggle for us and it actually was for a half as we only lead by four, 21-17. We had a good first quarter and had a nine point lead late in the second but we gave up a three towards the end of the quarter and went in with a ...
