The San Saba County Pecan Growers and Texas AgriLife Extension are gearing up for the annual Pecan Show. You are invited and encouraged to enter your pecan varieties in this years show. Please bring your entries to the Extension office in the Courthouse on or before November 25th. A sample is comprised of 40 pecans.

The veterans of the Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 will meet Wednesday, November 11th for a two part program. At 7:30 a.m. members and their guests are invited to be in place at the San Saba School elementary cafeteria for a complimentary breakfast. After the meal, a patriotic program will be presented by the students.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met at 1:30 p.m. on October 26th in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order. Commissioner Rickey Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. On Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, the instructional staff of San Saba High School had a vision that will transform the delivery of instruction. On these dates the teaching staff received training to utilize a Mac/Apple laptop and accompanying software to enhance the delivery of instruction. The staff was provided these laptops through the Vision 2020 Grant in the amount of $459,198.

A lot of the food advise we get tells us to avoid certain foods. None of us like to do told “you can’t do that or eat that”. The Nutrient Rich Foods approach to eating is a little different. It is a positive approach that encourages us to eat certain foods.

Terry Vaughn’s dad Ronnie Vaughn had a pace maker put in last Monday. The funeral for M.J. Kuykendall was held last Saturday at the Kuykendall Cemetery. All his children and some grandchildren were able to attend the funeral. Marillyn Hawkins, M.J.’s sister and some of her children and grandchildren were also here. Carol Ann Burdine had double knee replacement surgery at Scott and White in Temple. Esther and Dan Cox had family visiting for the Fall Festival.

I took my wife out to eat the other day. The waitress brought us a menu and we began to look for what we wanted to eat. The first thing I look at is the item itself and it’s description. Then, because we are on a budget, I look at the price.

It appears that we are in for some beautiful Fall weather this week. Everything is still so pretty and green. We are beginning yet another new month. The Busy Bee quilting club will have a Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 10th. If you would like to know what to bring, call our president, Marilyn Miller.

It is hard to believe that October is a thing of the past and November has arrived and the families are busy making plans for the big Turkey Day. The older you get the faster the months go flying by. The weather this past week was super-duper and so far this week it has been really nice.

It took me a few days, but I think I have thawed out from Friday night’s game. I’ll bet they did great with the hot cocoa business at the concession stand on Friday. I also saw several toboggans that must have been purchased from the Coyote wagon. I had some trouble with that word toboggan.

Recently we were moving some sheep to another pasture and about 25 head ran off from the flock. I tried to get around them with the 4 wheeler but because I was paying so close attention to the sheep I hit a mound of dirt and turned over. Fortunately I was not going very fast but I found out one thing, the older you get the harder the ground is.

The San Saba Middle School Armadillo’s experienced one of the busiest times of the year last week! Monday started off rainy, but it didn’t slow down the activities that were planned for the week. The cross-country teams had to wait until Tuesday to run, but it was all worth it.

A wonderful gift, so precious and sweet; our hearts and lives are finally complete. Timothy and Tara Ketchum are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Timothy "Stone" Ketchum. Stone was born July 26, 2009 at 1:57 p.m. at Llano Memorial Hospital. He weighed 6 lbs. 6 oz. and was 18 1/2 in.

During their September 2009 meeting, the Texas Transportation Commission (Commission) adopted draft strategic direction statements for the agency. These new statements are designed to provide attainable performance results that the public can use to easily measure our organization. With that in mind, TxDOT is engaged in a statewide public education and outreach through our districts and divisions to collect public input from across the state.

The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612 will hold their stated meeting on Saturday evening, November 7th. A meal of turkey, dressing and ham will be provided by Past Master Earnest Roy Jones. The San Saba Senior Center wishes to the thank everyone in the community who helped to make the cowboy boot Christmas stocking project a great success. The generous donations of time, money, materials and gift items have been amazing. Over the past weeks, the stockings were put together, decorations were added and then they were filled with a variety of food items, toiletries, and candy.

Six Year Old T.J. Grant killed his first deer, an 8 point buck, Sunday afternoon during the Youth Season on the Shahan Ranch. T.J. is the son of Tim and Shayna Grant, big brother of Tyler Grant, Great-grandparents are Jimmie and Adriane Shahan, and Mary Maxcey.

It is fairly well evident that we have definitely found Fall around the Hill Country as demonstrated by ol’ Man Weather the past couple of weeks. We’ve had some extremely nice mornings with the temps. dipping down in the high 30’s, with the mid-afternoon mercury rising up to the 68-72 level, which Hoyt Browning & Charley Cunningham taught us was the ideal temperature for body comfort.

Operation Orphans, Inc. kicked off its 50th season of taking less fortunate children deer hunting Friday, October 30th. Twenty five girls from four Texas children's homes came to Camp Gene Ashby looking forward to their outdoor experience Saturday. Homes represented were: Boy's & Girl's Harbor, La Porte; Children's Home of Lubbock; Foster's Home, Stephenville; and Boy's & Girl's Country, Hockley.

Deanna Wells Saul, 68, of Brady, passed away Friday, October 23, 2009 at her residence. Deanna Wells was born, June 13, 1941 in the Rough Creek Community of San Saba County to John B. Wells and Beryl Locker Wells. Deanna worked most of her life as chief financial officer for Aus-Mex Corporation.

Edna Katherine (Kay) McKee was born on March 25, 1917 to Walter and Mary Lena Haynie Peel in Kemp, TX. She was an only child. Kay was raised in Kemp and graduated from Kemp High School as its Valedictorian in 1934. She then went on to receive a B.A. in English and Spanish from North Texas State University.

In a game full of big hits and big tackles from the defenses, the biggest tackle of all came from a player on the Armadillo offense. On a 4th down play with less than a minute to play, Anthony Salinas fumbled the ball and Indian linebacker Daniel Martinez scooped it up and raced towards a touchdown.

The Cherokee Jr. High beat the Lohn Jr. High last Thursday 42-30. Corbin Davis scored 3 touchdowns and added 2 PATs. Baylor Jordan scored 1 touchdown and 1 PAT. Andy Dozier scored 2 touchdowns. The Jr. High travels to Panther Creek Thursday for their final game of the season. Kickoff is 6:00 p.m.

The Cherokee JV defeated the Evant Elk JV last Thursday 36-7. Jordon Cooks scored 2 rushing touchdowns, 1 kickoff return TD, and threw 1 touchdown pass. EJ Borchers scored 1 touchdown on a reception from Cooks. Payton Tatsch scored 1 touchdown. Burnam Sloan kicked 3 PATs.

The Comanche Warriors defeated the San Saba 8th Dillos by a score of 48-20 in Comanche last Thursday night. The warriors clinched the 8-AA District Championship and went undefeated for the season. The 8th Dillos played hard and gave them a run for a while during the contest. Comanche never stopped the Dillo offense, only the Dillos stopped themselves several times.

Basketball season is now upon us. Girl’s varsity basketball scheduled their first scrimmages of the year this past Saturday. Girl’s basketball coach Tony Dodson thanks everyone who attended the two Lady Coyote scrimmages Saturday at the Richland Springs gym. The varsity girls outscored Rising Star but came up short against Sidney.

On Friday night, October 30 the CWF of the First Christian Church of Richland Springs sponsored Coyotes for the Cure to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure. Our theme was “Whip Breast Cancer.” We set up a table by the concession stand at the Richland Springs-Santa Anna game.

The Cherokee Indians took no chances on letting the Lohn Eagles steal a victory from them last Friday night. The Indians scored on every possession while the defense allowed only one score as they ran all over the Lohn Eagles, 62-8. The game was called at halftime. Tucker Corsi had a big night scoring 6 touchdowns, kicking 4 PATs, and recovering one fumble.

The JV Dillos lost a hard fought contest to the Comanche JV on Thursday night. The final score was San Saba 6 and Comanche 22. Comanche received the opening kick off and mounted a long first quarter drive that resulted in the first touchdown of the game. The two point conversion was successful making the score 8-0.

This past weekend we traveled to Lampasas and were in a three way scrimmage with Austin LBJ, Llano and Lampasas. We went twenty minutes with each team and won two of the three segments. We opened up with Austin LBJ and were outscored 20-11. Their heigth and athleticism gave us some trouble.

The district cross country meet was held on Tuesday, October 27, rather than the scheduled Monday, October 26th because of rain. The high school ran in the morning in almost ideal conditions, while the Jr. High ran in the wind in the afternoon. The Varsity Boys of San Saba were beaten by 2 points by Dublin for the championship.

How about those ‘Dillos! It is such an exciting time in our community! The San Saba Armadillo Football Team success has certainly fueled the excitement and enthusiasm that we feel at school and in the town. It is so fun to have the community come out to the games and support these student athletes.
