It is time to get things rolling for the next Super Saturday in Cherokee to be held on Saturday, October 24th.
Along with the Super Saturday Arts and Crafts Fair will be the second Cherokee History Day and Old-timers Reunion.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Monday, August 31st in the County Judge’s Chambers.
Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order. Kenley Kroll gave the invocation and everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
Marsha Hardy presented a purchase policy for San Saba County.

HB 2730 and HB 339, enacted recently by the 81st Texas Legislature, restricts all drivers under the age of 18 from using a wireless
communication device while operating a motor vehicle.
This new restriction applies to licenses issued after September 1, 2009, to applicants who are under 18.
All drivers under 18 who were issued an original driver license before September 1, 2009 are still restricted from using a wireless

What is old is new - While at one time San Saba County supported several cotton gins, there has been very little cotton grown in the county in recent memory. Zane Woods is shown displaying cotton bolls which were grown on what is known as The old “Duran Place” currently owned by Buddy & Connie Adams.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Grimm visited the Grimm Ranch this week and also all their friends in Cherokee. They are now living and working in Italy.

Sam Oatman, of Llano was recently named by Governor Mark White as district attorney for the 33rd Judicial District replacing Louis Crump of San Saba who resigned the position effective Sept. 1, four months prior to the expiration date of his term.
Construction of the Home Office of Heart O Texas Savings Association is scheduled to begin in February, 1985.

We have not had any rain in a week or so and it showing on the vegetation. The temperatures have been a little cooler. There is a touch of Fall in the air.
As we begin another new month, the Busy Bee quilters will meet on the 8th and the 42 tournament will be on the 12th in Richland Springs.

How often have you heard God’s name used to punctuate a statement or to curse a situation or a person? It’s common to hear the names God, Lord, or Jesus Christ used in these profane ways. And those who use God’s name in such useless, empty, and vain ways seem to think nothing of it.
But God does not take the profane use of His name lightly.

A front moved through Thursday night leaving about 2/10 of an inch of rain. Some who live in Lampasas reported up to an inch of rain this past week. After the front the temperature has not been as hot this past week.
Carol Mackinnan is a new resident who recently made the move from county road 208 San Saba to the Bend community.

He was not supposed to be born this time of year and even worse, he was born in the middle of a crowded livestock pen with lots of sheep running around and all over him. He was all dirty and knocked down so many times it was hard for him to stand.

You have to know you’re in Texas when you think 96 is a cool front! I actually enjoyed Saturday outdoors. I have no front lawn, it is fried crispy brown! We did get a little kiss of rain last week, but it was less than 1/10th of an inch. Some of you had a little more, most had less, if that’s possible.

The Friends of the Library will sponsor its first annual art show at Rylander Memorial Library on Friday and Saturday, November 6-7 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Along with the art show, the Library will hold an open house and book sale.
The event will take place the same weekend as San Saba’s Hunters Welcome.

The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612 will hold their stated meeting on Saturday evening, September 5th. A meal of Mexican Food will be provided by Junior Warden Jan K. Huffstetler. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. Members are asked to bring a complimentary covered side dish, bread, salad or dessert.

On Sunday August 23rd Mill Pond Park was transformed into a community-wide festival. Sunday Funday, as the event has been called, included fun for the whole family. The community pool was opened for all and the parking lot was filled with giant inflatable houses and water slides. An interactive puppet and music show was enjoyed by the kids, as well as duck races, bubble gum blowing contests, Water balloon launch, cake walk, balloon animals, face painting, and lots of prizes!

The Heart of Texas Regional Today's Girl Youth Development Program will begin their new community service for the fall. The girls will have a booth at the Pecan Capital Trade Day on the Court House Square in San Saba on Saturday, September 5th from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The organization will be collecting new twin sheet sets, bath towels and cash donations to purchase the items for the troops returning to Ft.

Time is fast approaching for the 36th annual Sheep and Goat Field Day set Sept. 3 at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center located just north of San Angelo on U.S. Highway 87.
The field day starts with registration at 8 a.m. followed by the morning program at 9:00 a.m.

Receipts totaled 2479 head for the week. The market as a whole was steady to a little uneven with lighter steers and heifers selling steady to $2 lower and heavier steers and heifers steady to $1 lower. The fleshy calves and Crossbred calves sold $3 lower and fleshy bull calves were $4 lower.

Evelyn McDaniel Locke, age 91, affectionately known as Mimi, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Methodist Church in Brownwood on Saturday, August 29, and interment followed at Wallace Creek Cemetery in San Saba County. The family greeted guests from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday night at Davis Morris Funeral Home.
Evelyn was born on March 13, 1918 in San Saba County, Texas to Alvie and Addie McDaniel.

Gladys Lenora Bolinger, 85, of Salinas, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.She was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Green Forrest, Ark. Gladys was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed painting, quilting, traveling in the family motor home. She loved the Salinas Valley and all the seasons.

The second week of school was busy! Teachers were well-prepared and the week went smoothly. Teachers are adjusting to the CSCOPE science curriculum used by the district. The CSCOPE curriculum adds rigor which will hopefully increase student success in science.
The varsity Coyotes were victorious in their first outing over Azle Christian by 50-0.

For the first time in nine years, the San Saba Armadillos opened the season with a shutout. They defeated the De Leon Bearcats 36-0 at Rogan Field last Friday night. It was the largest opening game win since a 46-6 victory over Goldthwaite in 1980 and the largest opening shutout since the Armadillos 41-0 win in 1973 over the Eagles.

The Cherokee Indians 2009 season started off with their opening game being forfeited by the Star Tigers who were short a player.
To give everybody some playing time, the Indians scrimmaged the Lometa Hornet JV squad. The scrimmage went very well for the Indians, who outscored the Hornets 50-24. One and a half minutes into the game, Tucker Corsi scored on a 5 yard run and kicked the PAT.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met August 27, 2009 for play day with the Chair for August, Dorothy Sterner, calling for a game of counting the even holes on the front nine and the odd holes on the back nine, less half your handicap. First Place went to Jo Ann Snow and there was a tie for Second and Third between Sandee Hartley and Jo Anne Hardy.

The San Saba JV opened their 2009 season at DeLeon. The Dillos came out and played well for the first 1 and ½ quarters. The Bearcats did not get a first down during the time. Then the Dillos had a punt blocked, which got the team down emotionally. The Dillos allowed them to drive 25 yards for a TD.

The San Saba Tennis Association will have a reorganization meeting on Tuesday, September 8th , at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the tennis courts, in the stands on the east side of the courts. The association is going to try to get a women’s league, men’s league and a junior league going for the fall, spring, and summer months.

We are about middle way through the 2nd week of the ’09-‘10 school year. The Indians have gotten off to a good start in football.
They will play at Faith Academy in Marble Falls this Friday night at 7:30. The Faith Academy stadium is 3 miles East of Hwy 281 on RR 1431.
We have welcomed 3 new teachers to the school district.

Last week I mentioned that San Saba ISD was launching a new parent grade and attendance portal. This portal is called txConnect. Previously, San Saba ISD used a product called Parent Connection. This school year the District is moving to a product that integrates with our current accounting software program and will provide you with more information than before.

Tyler Hawkins graduated from Texas Tech University on Saturday, August 8, 2009. Family and friends were there to celebrate this momentous occasion as he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Range Management.
