The Free Meal 3rd Sunday will be held July 19th, 2009 at the firestation in Richland Springs, Texas, from 12:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Last month the event was cancelled in honor of Father's Day. This month, July 19th, everyone is invited to come with friends, family, and visit with neighbors, meet new people in the county and eat a free meal.

Incoming Rotary Club President Dora Miller presents a plaque honoring outgoing Club President Harold Yates for his service to the club and community. Harold served the club from June of 2008 through May of 2009. In his year as president the club sponsored it’s annual Honor Student Banquet where it awarded scholarships to graduating seniors from all three county high schools.

The San Saba County Commissioners met Monday, July 13th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Roger McGehee gave the invocation and everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Carole Warlick, General Manager of the Hill Country Community Transit District, gave a short over-view of the Transit System.

The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month for July is at 401 North 9th St., owned by Jimmie and Adriane Shahan. Jimmie has lived in the house all his life. There is a lot going on in the yard. There are Begonias, Wisteria, Mexican heather, Geraniums, Lantana, Rose bushes, Caladiums, Hollykock, Nandina, Hibiscus, Egyptian Star flowers, and more.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs today announced that the state collected $1.57 billion in sales tax revenue in June, down 11.2 percent compared to June 2008. “The oil and gas, construction and retail trade sectors showed continued weakness, resulting in a sharp decrease in sales tax collections in June,” Combs said.

I know that we are in the hot and dry time of the year but I have a question for you – who needs flood insurance? Answer: EVERYONE! San Saba County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program [NFIP] and EVERYONE in a participating community can buy flood insurance. In some instances, people have been told that they cannot buy flood insurance because of where they live.

Nearly everyone acknowledges that our health care system needs reform. We are particularly aware of this in Texas, which is a leading example of how our system isn’t working for so many patients. Texas, unfortunately, has the highest percentage of people without health insurance coverage in the nation. In fact, at a whopping 6 million, the number of uninsured Texans is roughly the same as the entire population of the state of Wisconsin!

Several from Cherokee were in Brownwood last Saturday to attend the beautiful wedding of Judy McCown and Jason Carlisle. Funeral services were held last week for Lavoyce Sellman. We extend our sympathy to her family. Rodney, Tracy, Kendall and Brady Johnson vacationed in Colorado recently. They reported the weather was wonderful in Colorado. 50 Years Ago July 16, 1959 In June 319 persons were arrested for fishing without licenses. A fishing licence costs $2.15. Other violations were 22 persons arrested for trespassing and 15 for hunting at night. There were a few violations for killing game out of season. We received 2 inches last Monday morning, July 6th, when the early morning rain came in. I know we need more rain but the countryside still remains pretty and green. The 42 tournament was well attended last Saturday night at Elm Grove. There were 4 1/2 tables of players. There were several from Brownwood who are apparently regulars.

I got a call last week from a friend that was in trouble because a big flood ruined his farmland and he had no feed for his sheep. He wanted me to buy his little flock, so I did and hauled them to my place. We try to keep all new livestock separated from our flock for a short while in case they have any diseases.

Last month was a busy one for the William Clark family. Kasandra Clark was married in New Mexico June 27th. Kasandra is the daughter of Bobby and Kit Clark of Round Rock and Myra and Jerry Skinner of Dora, New Mexico. All of the Clark family and Carrie Wayne Keeney was in attendance.

It’s early Sunday morning and the household is still sleeping. I hope the clacking of the keys doesn’t disturb my sleeping granddaughters; they had a busy day yesterday. We went downtown to tour the CN Tower. Friday night we took a harbor cruise and enjoyed the sight of Toronto, sparkling in the night.

Descendants of W.W. and Mary Frances Brazil Millican met at the San Saba Civic Center on Saturday, July 4th for food, fun, and fellowship. Families began to gather at about 10:30 A. M. as hosts Sylvia and Forrest McGregor were there to greet and register guests. Some 63 family and friends of the family were able to enjoy the day, despite the heat and the drought. Mose Millican’s family was well-represented.

Jose and Sabel Romero are proud to announce the birth of their son Jayden Ross Romero born April 20th, 2009 at 9:53 a.m. at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Jayden weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz. and was 19 3/4 inches long. He was welcomed home by his big brother Skyler. Grandparents are Juan and Teresa Romero and Abel and Hermina Paredez, Jr.

Next Thursday, July 23rd, a brand new pastor is preparing to come to share a talk with our Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon. She just graduated in May from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. Then Celia Kitchens moved to Lometa in June and became the pastor of Bend Methodist Church and Lometa Methodist Church, not one church, but two churches!

The clinic will be held on Wed., July 29th at the Armadillo Arena. Physicals will begin with the boys at 2:00 p.m followed by the girls at 4:00 p.m. All student athletes entering the 7th, 9th, and 11th grade must have a physical each year for UIL competition. Parents are encouraged to receive and sign all necessary paperwork at this time.

The descendents of the late W.W. Hibler met together at San Saba, Tx. on July 11, 2009 for a family reunion. The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the late Chris & Feilden Hibler were there. The crowd was small, but everyone enjoyed visiting, eating, singing, and looking at old family pictures. Harold and Barbara Goelmann of Llano ,Texas were special guests.

In the midst of uncertain times and a weakened economy, Hunters for the Hungry exceeded expectations by posting an increase of nearly 8% in donated meat. During the 2008-2009 hunting season, hunters donated a total of 192,040 pounds of meat through 104 participating meat processors in 74 counties. More than 90 recipient organizations received and distributed the meat to those in need.

Receipts totaled 3853 head for the week with a choice offering of calves and yearlings. Demand was strong and trade very active with stocker steers selling $2 to $4 higher and stocker heifers $2 to $5 higher. Feeder steers sold $1 to $2 higher and heifers were $1 to $3 higher.

Texas animal health officials have cast another wide net in the battle to eradicate cattle fever ticks in South Texas. The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has temporarily quarantined 152,716 acres in Starr and Hidalgo counties. In nearby Zapata County, five-mile quarantine perimeters are being drawn around fever-tick infested pastures.

The 4-H Youth Board will be hosting a Hunter Education Training Course on August 5-7 at the Extension office from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day. The cost of the training is $15.00. Hunter Education provides instruction in Texas hunting regulations, wildlife management and identification, conservation, ethics, firearm and hunting safety and responsibility, and outdoor skills.

The 2007 Census of Agriculture says young farmers are becoming an endangered species. Nationally, the number of farmers under 25 has decreased by 30 percent since 2002, and the average age of U.S. farmers has increased from 55 to 57 over the same time period. In Texas, the average age of farmers is now even older: almost 59.

Jason Perkins, 37, of Berthoud, passed away on July 9, 2009 in San Saba, Texas after a long struggle with mental illness. Jason was a native of Houston, Texas. He moved to Colorado in 1985, attended Sunset Middle School and Niwot High School and graduated in 1990. Master Sergeant Bradley "Bubba" S. Bryan, age 48, of Kempner passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer at his residence with his family at his side. The concept of drill team originated right here in Texas between 1929 to 1931 when two ladies-Gussie Nell Davis and Kay Teer Crawford-developed the pep squads they were involved with into performance teams on the football field at half-time. Miss Davis became well known as the originator and director of the Kilgore College Rangerettes, while Kay Teer Crawford left Texas to become well known in California for her choreography.

Charles Fry of San Saba, graduated from Tarleton State University Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the university’s Stephenville campus. Commencement ceremonies were held May 9. Graduation lists were finalized by the registrar’s office on June 30. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 9, 2009 for play day with the Chair for July, Anita Miles, calling for a game of the traveling 4-ball point system, as San Saba is hosting the monthly game next week, August 16, 2009. This point system is three points for birdie, two points for par, and one point for boggie plus your handicap.

The San Saba Junior Tennis Tournament will be held on July 31st and August 1, 2009, starting at 8:00 a.m. Singles will be played on Friday July 31st. Doubles and Mixed Doubles will be played on Saturday, August 1st. Entry fee will be $10 per person per event. Events will include: boys and girls singles and doubles.

A new study shows that nearly 1 in 10 kids has a parent abusing or dependent on drugs or alcohol. A report released by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reveals that a surprising number of children — more than 8 million — live with at least one parent who was dependent on or abused alcohol or an illicit drug in the past year.
