The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging Texas residents to make sure that any alarm salesperson, company or alarm installer that they hire is licensed by the Private Security Bureau. The Private Security Bureau has initiated investigations in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin following reports that numerous unlicensed salespersons, installers and companies have been aggressively marketing their services to residents in those cities-primarily going door to door in neighborhoods.

Approximately $232,000 for San Saba County Municipal Airport was approved by the Texas Transportation Commission at its June meeting. The funds will be used for planned airport improvements, which includes: Land acquisition. A contract for the project is expected to be awarded this fall. Project costs will be funded through TxDOT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system, and San Saba County. I recently had the opportunity to celebrate the Fourth of July early and in a unique way far removed from the backyard celebrations in Texas, normally marked by family barbeques and fireworks. This year, on the eve of our nation’s Independence Day, I was in Baghdad thanking those who are protecting the freedom that we celebrate on July Fourth.

Cherokee Grocery will close this Saturday at Noon (12:00). I will be attending Judy McCown’s wedding in Brownwood. Judy was a devoted employee at Cherokee Grocery while she was in High School. We woke up this Monday morning to the sound of thunder and some lightening. We registered 1.5 inches here in Richland Springs. I have not contacted my rain spotter in Elm Grove, I’ll have to get that later. Maybe we will have received more by then. They got over 3 inches in Brownwood, again.

I was on my way to visit my son and daughter in-law and as I turned the corner near their home I noticed a tiny baby colt lying on his side in a small pasture. I stopped because I thought he might be dead but I noticed that his tail would move or twitch every now and then.

We have two of the most amusing cats living at our house. We have started to let them out for brief periods of time. We dare not let them out alone or they would be gone. They are our daughter, Tiffany’s cats. If they were to get lost or hit by an automobile, she would have a difficult time (as would Cyndi).

Wonders will never cease, we woke up to rain Monday, not just a light shower but rain which started in the early hours. At noon the rain gauge showed 7/10 of the rain. Last week San Saba received showers but at the Bend not even a drop, so this rain is most welcome. The July 4 celebrations were very safe and fairly quiet around the Bend.

With 2009 nearly half over, the Internal Revenue Service reminded Texans that there is no better time to check their 2009 federal income tax withholding levels to make sure they do not face any surprises when returns are due next spring. “It’s always a good idea to check your income tax withholding when there are changes in your life or financial situation that affect your tax liability,” said Clay Sanford, an IRS spokesman in Dallas.

Regardless of how hard we might try, many folks that write community columns or similar other pieces for a Newspaper really have a difficult time not mentioning the weather. We might even add that it is probably twice as difficult if you are in a rural situation where agriculture is the most important industry to the local economy.

Receipts totaled 577 head for the week. The market was steady on feeder steers and heifers while stocker steers sold $2 lower and stocker heifers sold $1 to $2 lower. Fleshy bull calves sold $5 lower and plain and unattractive calves sold $5 lower. Packer cows and bulls remain steady.

Mills County Meat Goat Association will be meeting Thursday, July 16th at 7pm in the Mills County State Bank Community Room on Parker Street across from the bank. Kirk Perry, an I.B.G.A. judge, will be making a special presentation on breed standards and conformation of goats. And the sewers are back! After learning how to sew a simple apron pattern at clothing fun day, the 4-H’ers were ready to take their skills to the next level. At the 4-H sewing camp the 4-H’ers learned how to sew a sun dress or coordinating summer tops and bottoms.

About 15 enthusiastic, aspiring golfers attended the Junior Golf Clinic at the San Saba Golf Course June 30-July 2. Most of the participants were from San Saba although two were from Goldthwaite and one was from Austin. The clinic was led by Coach Schulze and Keith Harris, San Saba’s Golf Pro.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 2, 2009 for the monthly business meeting. The President, Anita Miles, called the meeting to order and the meeting was opened with prayer by Hattie Rogers. The Secretary, Hattie Rogers, then read the minutes and they were approved as read. For the second time in three years Troy High School junior Brittany Ellis has qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo. Ellis, her parents Brad and Sonya Ellis and her seven year old palomino gelding "Mojo" will be traveling with the Texas High School National Rodeo Team to Farmington, New Mexico from July 19-25 to compete at the 61st NHSFR finals in barrel racing.
