The major crime rate in Texas decreased nearly 3 percent in 2008, according to data compiled by the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Compared with 2007, the crime rate-the number of crimes per 100,000 population in Texas—decreased 2.9 percent in 2008. The violent crime rate decreased .6 percent in 2008 from 2007.

Competing in sports at a Class-1A school offers the athlete three indisputable challenges: getting recognized by anybody, getting recognized by a college, and getting recognized by a Division I college. San Saba County 4-H will be holding a dog dip/rabies clinic on Saturday June 20th at the Centex Fertilizer on Highway 190 East of Richland Springs from 1:00p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Charles Key, DVM with San Saba Animal Hospital will provide the rabies shots. The shots will be $10.00. Other shots will also be available.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday, June 9th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge's Chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order followed by Kenley Kroll giving the invocation with everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. The Commissioners approved the County Clerk's report and the Treasurer's Report.

Texas AgriLife Extension agent, Carolyn McDowell, reminds parents that summertime is almost here, and with the increase in temperatures, the danger of children dying from being left unattended in vehicles increases. Temperatures in parked vehicles can rise very quickly. According to San Francisco State University’s department of geosciences, in just 10 minutes the temperature can increase by almost 20 degrees.

Anna Bustamante and Coby Randolph were married last Saturday night in Fredericksburg. The outdoor wedding was beautiful. Congratulations to the couple. Last week we had the opportunity to go to a nearby lake and be with our children, grandchildren, and friends. It was a special treat for us to be together. Yes, it was crowded and some slept outside while others on the floor. It was very interesting but fun at mealtimes.

I have had the opportunity to attend two graduation ceremonies in the last two weeks. Young people have worked hard and have now moved on to the next phase of their lives. Some would say the easy part is over and I agree. Now life has to be lived in its fullness.

We have received about 1.5 inches of rain here in Richland Springs in the past week. I heard some of my old neighbors at Elm Grove had more than 2 inches. There was a large number of folks at the 2nd annual Elm Grove VFD fundraiser last Saturday night. The crowd enjoyed some very good fish and trimmings.

The weather has been the main subject of conversation around the Bend. Thursday night the storm hit with lots of lightening and very high winds. There was over an inch of rain and lots of downed trees and broken limbs. Some people lost some very old huge pecan trees that had been around for years.

I hope everyone had a good week. San Antonio was just great, but someone forgot to tell that city that we are in a recession! Every time I travel there, I see new buildings, houses and businesses being built. The kids and I swam, played tennis, and exercised on the WII.

Worth and Patsy Isham will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18th. They were married in the First Baptist Church in Richland Springs by Rev. George McHorse. Their four children, Jerilyn, Don, Cheray, and Stuart will be hosting a family luncheon. They also plan a trip to Branson to celebrate.

Amanda Jackson celebrated her 86th birthday with a luncheon at Millican’s Pecan on Tuesday, June 9 with about 20 friends. One of the most touching parts of the festivities occurred when Amanda’s friends described some of the ways she has been special to them. Everyone seemed to focus on Amanda’s gentle and joyful spirit and her desire to help others. Amanda’s family has a long history in San Saba County.

Shelby Gossage is excited to announce the arrival of her new baby brother, Nolan Anthony. Nolan was born May 20, 2009 at 3:18 p.m. at Baylor Regional Medical Center in Grapevine,Texas weighing in at 8 lbs. 9 oz. and 21 inches long. Proud parents are Tony and Julie Gossage of Keller, Texas.

At 2:15 A. M. On Tuesday, June 12, members of the Richland Springs Drama Club pulled out for the Austin airport on their way to New York City for the trip of a lifetime. After an unexpected layover in the Chicago O’Hare airport due to inclement weather, the students landed safely at La Guardia airport in NYC.

The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the schedule of events for the 71st Annual Rodeo. Our Pecan Capital of the World rodeo is to begin on Thursday evening, June 18th with the County Wide Team Roping. The public is invited out to watch local competitors. The descendants of the late J.W. and Hattie Mallett Stewart held their annual reunion the weekend of June 13 and 14, 2009. Saturday evening the group gathered at the home of Doris Cates for hamburgers and homemade ice cream with over 30 in attendance. The Senior Center was the scene for a covered dish luncheon, a lot of fellowship, picture taking and enjoying the beautiful Mill Pond Park.

Ron Gerhart, a San Saba Co. 4-H’er, was one of the participants at the 63rd annual state Round Up at Texas A&M last week. 4-H is an educational organization for third through twelfth graders Round Up is a state competition in which students ages 14 to 18 demonstrate their skills and knowledge in 39 different areas such as public speaking, decision making, leadership and community service.

Ben Floyd Blossman, 82 died June 11, 2009 at his home in Kingsland, Texas. He was born to Floyd Joseph and Florese (Harkey) Blossman on April 1, 1927 in the Wallace Creek Community in San Saba County. Mr. Blossman proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in Manila, Philippine Islands.

Nellie V Wood, age 84 of Brownwood, went Home on Sunday, June 14, 2009. Nellie V Wood was born October 27, 1924 in Bethel, Texas to Charles and Ethel Brown. She married C. B. Wood on June 20, 1942 in San Saba County. Nellie V was a member of South Side Baptist Church of Brownwood, where she had resided for the last 14 years.

The Classes of 1950 and 1951 merged together and had their class reunions in the San Saba Armadillo Arena on June 6, 2009. A display of old memorabilia, pictures, and other items were set up and displayed to look at and enjoy. Betty Jean Inman donated one of her beautiful paintings to be raffled off to some lucky winner. Michael Hardy, a doctoral student at Montclair State University, New Jersey recently won a $150 award in the student poster competition at the Hudson Delaware Chapter meeting of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. This year’s meeting was held in Bear Mountain, NY on April 23rd and 24th. Michael was recognized for his poster entitled “Removal of heavy metals from shipyard storm water using residuals of drinking water treatment.” A Ph.D.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met June 11, 2009 for play day with the Chair for June, Jo Anne Hardy, calling for a game of using the traveling 4-ball point system; one point for boggie, two points for par, three points for birdie, plus your handicap. First place went to Jo Ann Snow who also scored the Low Net for the day and second place to Jo Anne Hardy.

Changes to school immunization requirements for five vaccines take effect Aug. 1 according to Texas Department of State Health Services officials. THEA testing to take place on Wednesday June 24, 2009 at 8:00 A.M. in the San Saba High School Cafeteria. The THEA Test is a college readiness exam required by most colleges and universities for college entrance. The THEA Test is also required by SSISD in order to enroll in the dual credit program at SSHS.
