Each year Central Texas Telephone Cooperative gives donations to nineteen volunteer fire departments and EMS organizations within its service area.

Leigh Adella Rhoad from San Saba has qualified for the upcoming College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).
Rhoad is a junior at Texas A&M University. This is her first qualification in barrel racing. The CNFR will be held at the Casper Events Center June 14-20. At stake are National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association titles and nearly $250,000 in scholarships.

The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the schedule of events for the 71st Annual Rodeo.
Our Pecan Capital of the World rodeo is to begin on Thursday evening, June 18th with the County Wide Team Roping. The public is invited out to watch local competitors. The concession stand will be open, so come on out and enjoy the evening.
Friday’s activities begin at 6:00 p.m.

The yard of the month for June is at 307 W. Commerce and is the home of Bob and Martha Leigh Whitten. It is a huge yard and is a must see for all the citizens of San Saba. There are Knock-Out roses, ferns, rosemary, Mexican hats, Crepe myrtles, white sage, salvia, pink and white pomegranates, pink impatiens, purple berry bushes, and sidewalks everywhere so you can see everything.

The Board of Trustees of the San Saba ISD met for a regular meeting on June 8th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker declared a quorum and called the meeting to order followed by an invocation and everyone joined in the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
Marcie Maxcey, Kim Kirk and Michael Deans were sworn in as newly elected members and gave the oath of office.

We can live for several weeks without food but we can only live a few days without water. More than half the body’s weight is water. Why does our body need water? It actually performs more than one function. It helps move food through the body, regulates the body temperature and also helps in eliminating body wastes.

June 7, 1984
Larry Letbetter, Vocational Agriculture Teacher in San Saba High School for eighteen years, was named principal of the school at a special meeting of the San Saba ISD Board of Trustees on May 29. He will take over his new position August 1.
A county wide prayer service sponsored by the San Saba Ministerial Alliance will be held Sunday June 10 at the First Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m.

It seems we had .7 of an inch of rain in the storm that blew in last Tuesday night. Here at Richland Springs our rain gauge blew off the post, so we didn’t know how much we had. Marilyn and I were caught in Brady, for the second time, where we had gone to watch the grandsons play ball.

The San Saba All Sports Boosters support ALL San Saba ISD athletes. We are responsible for the football poster, Meet the Dillos, and selling t-shirts so our community will be able to show support for our athletes. We run concession stands at some events so participants and fans will have a place to get something to eat and drink, as well as an opportunity for the booster club to raise money that we can give back to the athletes.

Peggy Henniger called with some great news last week. She reported that she and Calvin had a new great grandson. His name is Cody James Hunt. Cody weighed in at 9 pounds and 4 ounces and arrived May 28. His parents are Randi and Jeremy Hunt of San Angelo. Holly and Randy Key of Pecos are the proud grandparents.
Bill and Jo Price were in Midland Thursday to attend the reunion luncheon for the ARCO retirees that meet every three months.

I’m in sunny San Antonio spending a little quality time with my grandkids. Jason is with me since he was at loose ends in Dallas. He doesn’t see his younger cousins very often, so we will have a great week. I’m writing this a little early so that I can send it before I leave on Sunday.

Friday evening, June 12 come experience something rare and unique in Dublin Texas. There will be a hot air balloon glow. Three full-size hot air balloons will be on the ground using propane blasts to perform a spectacular light show. The glow will begin at approximately 8pm and will last about an hour.
On that same evening, Keep Dublin Beautiful will host the Dublin AlleyFest in conjunction with the Dublin Dr Pepper birthday celebration.

The Howard-Laughlin Family would like to welcome Clara Jane Howard to the Family. She was born on June 4, 2009 at 8:02 p.m. in Fredricksburg, TX. She weighed 7lbs and 7ozs and was 19 in long. Her parents are Jason & Sharon Howard of San Saba, older brother John Howard of San Saba, grandparents are Claude & Susan Howard of San Antonio and Charlie and Chris Laughlin of San Antonio.

On Wednesday, June 3, 2009 the members of the Richland Springs First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) CWF met for their monthly meeting in the fellowship hall of the church. Before we had our meal Mary Kate Adams read a devotional and prayer. We were served by Georganna Sonnenberg, Bobbie Adams, and Sue Williams.
At 6:45 pm Georganna called the meeting to order.

Employees of Super S Foods #330 all joined together and threw a surprise luncheon for manager Clay Bush. Clay has been with Super S Foods for two years and the employees wanted to express their appreciation of Clay being kind, understanding and he is willing to help anyone he can.

The perennial Heart of Texas Cow/Calf Clinic conducted by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service is set for June 18 at the Brown County Fairgrounds in Brownwood on U.S. Hwy 377 South.
The clinic will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a catered barbecue meal.
“The Cow/Calf Clinic has a long-standing tradition of being one of the favorite beef cattle programs in Central Texas,” said Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agent in Brown County.

Looks like we’ve gotten Memorial Day behind us, as well as the observance of D-Day. I know that many of us watched a good bit of the footage of the the invasion of the beaches of Normandy that was shown on the History Channel much of the weekend.

Receipts totaled 2096 head for the week. The market was active and demand good with stocker steers and heifers steady. Feeder steers were $2 lower and feeder heifers were steady to $1 lower. Packer cows and bulls all sold $1 to $3 lower.

If a condemner wants to seize your land to build a road or even a school, current laws allow them to do it after making you a disingenuous, low-ball offer.

Carolyn Ann (Cookie) Mueller Wood, age 60, went to be with her heavenly father, Friday, May 22, 2009. She fought a long battle with cancer, but lost. Cookie was a remarkable, loving person. She was very generous, and had an enormous heart for animals. Caring for animals was her passion in life.
Carolyn married Howard Wayne Wood (a San Saba native) on February 1, 1992.

Kate Ingram, 76, of Copperas Cove, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Brownwood Regional Hospital in Brownwood. She was born October 15, 1932, in Ramage, VA, the daughter of Albert Bell and Iva Lacey Bell. Kate Bell and James L. Ingram were married in Indianapolis, IN. Kate retired from the Copperas Cove Independent School District.

Patrick Francis Gates, loving husband, father, and friend, passed away May 19, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Patrick was born May 8, 1951 in Dallas, Polk County, Oregon to Francis Elmore Gates Jr. and Coral-Louise Raymond Gates.
Patrick owned and operated “Gates Tax Service” for 21 years and worked as a rural carrier at the Joplin, Missouri Post Office until 2002.

One can almost always determine the setting of a historical movie, play, or performance by looking at the character’s costumes. I myself, being what we call a “fashionista,” am able to pick out the decade a movie is set in by the clothing, within the first few minutes of a movie.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met June 4, 2009 for the monthly business meeting. As the President, Anita Miles, called the meeting to order, to her surprise, the members burst into song, “Happy Birthday”! Anita’s birthday is June 7th. What a delightful way to start the day for Anita.

Robert Pulatie of San Saba, Texas, was recently named to Tarleton State University’s Distinguished Students list. Pulatie is majoring in Wildlife Management at the university’s Stephenville campus.
Students on the list include freshman and sophomore students who have a minimum 3.25 grade point ratio (GPR) and no grade lower than a ‘C,’ and juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.5 GPR with no grade lower than a ‘C.’ All must be in good standing with the university.

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Brennen McGinty from Richland Springs, Tx. has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in Mathematics. This is a prestigious honor very few students can hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes fewer than 10% of all American high school students.

The Summer Reading Program, hosted by Rylander Library and LCRA, continues each Tuesday in June (9th, 16th, 23rd) at 1 p.m. at the library. Casey Sloan-Turner is shown here telling a story to those present. A special presentation by “Chicken Dog” will conclude this year’s summer reading program on June 30th at 2 p.m.

Outstanding Texas 5th-8th grade students from across the state have been selected to participate in Education in Action’s summer 2009 Lone Star Leadership Academy programs in Dallas/Fort Worth (5th & 6th graders), Austin (6th & 7th graders) and Houston/Galveston (7th & 8th graders). Selection for the Lone Star Leadership Academy is based on a student’s demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator recommendation and involvement in school/community activities.

News from San Saba ISD Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze
San Saba ISD and Cherokee ISD teachers received training in a new curriculum called CSCOPE.
The training was provided in three days and included lecture, hands on activities and the use of technology. The curriculum that can be used in a variety of ways, is concept based and is student centered.
