Recently, several civic minded citizens organized a coloring contest whereby the contestants colored pictures of the character Woody from the movie Toy Story, with Sheriff Allen Brown serving as their inspiration. Those pictures are now on display on the second floor of the San Saba County Courthouse. Lowe's and Kobalt Tools in partnership with SkillsUSA are helping the next generation of skilled trade professionals at San Saba ISD through their new Tough Tools for Cool Schools program. Lowe's in donating approximately $600 worth of Kobalt tools to the school as part of the new national program, which will total $300,000 to more than 500 SkillsUSA building trades and renovation programs across the nation for use in their classrooms. The San Saba County Commissioners met on Tuesday, May 26th at 9 a.m. in the county judge's chambers. Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and Roger McGehee gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. June 7, 2009 is National Cancer Survivors Day. On Monday June 8, the San Saba Senior Center will host a luncheon and reception from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society, represented by Laura Woollen. The Center is in need of food donations such as salads, desserts or appetizers.

She has been a phenomenon in England. There is a show called “Britain Has Talent” and one person has stood out more than the others. When you look at Susan Boyle, especially when she first sang, you would have thought she would not be around very long. When she opened her mouth and began to sing, it was a powerful transformation.

We have had some showers the past week, but not enough to measure. The countryside is so pretty and green. This is the beginning of another new month. It is just so hard to believe we are half-way through the year already. The Busy Bee quilters will meet on June 9th.

Dear Editor, I am writing as a concerned citizen who is not very pleased with being locked out of a city park donated to the people of San Saba for five day. In my opinion, this is unacceptable. It is the only swimmable body of water near town and is critical for those families without air conditioning to cool off.

I learned a lot about lawn and grass care while working in Bermuda grass research at the University. One of the most important things is you start working or preparing for a beautiful yard way in advance, waiting till the last minute will take a lot more effort, time and money and it will still not be as beautiful.

With all the rains the grass grows several inches each day, and it keeps everyone busy mowing. The mosquitos have been getting bad, because of the tall grass, weed and standing water. We received another half inch of rain this past week and if everything goes right should have some more rain Thursday.

It’s Sunday evening and we have just been blessed by a brief, but beautiful shower. My garden will love that, as will the wildflowers. I am resting today; last week was just too hectic for these old bones! The reading teachers had two days of training for a reading program that we are introducing next year.

Aspiring dancer, Erin Autry Edmondson of Leander, Tx., granddaughter of Tony and Janie Jacobs of Leander, has been studying dance off and on since she was 3 years old. Her love for dance has grown more and more over the past few years. Erin studies dance at the award winning dance studio Center Stage.

In the May 14th Edition of the News, the County Commissioners report stated: "We have 45 prisoners that were transported...." it should state: "We have 4 to 5 prisoners that were transported...."

Author and travel guru, Joyce Brooks, made a guest appearance on May 18 at the Rylander Public Library. Joyce, who traveled to seven continents by the time she was 70, amused the crowd as she described many of the humorous experiences she had while escorting thousands of tourists to exotic locations all over the world. Carol Littlefield coordinated the event which was sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Currently up for adoption at the City of San Saba Animal Control Center are these puppies. Adoption is free. The only charge is for a rabies shot and a city tag if you live in the city limits. For information on adopting them, contact the Animal Control Officer at the City Hall at 325-372-5144.

Reverend Max Brennan officiated. Music was provided by Carol Smithhart, soloist, the bride’s aunt and a reading was done by Allegra Pound, the groom’s sister.

Seems as if we just got through with New Year’s & Easter and here we find ourselves already past Memorial Day with Dad’s Day right around the corner. The end of this June month should mark the midway of this year, according to my meager mathematical measure. To tell the truth, I’ve always had a penchant for Math, it’s only Algebra that befuddled me.

Receipts totaled 700 head for the week. Stocker steers and heifers sold steady and feeder steers and heifers showed no change from last week. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Oak Street Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Finfrock officiating. Jeanelle Lindsey Robertson of Pflugerville, Tx. died Sunday, May 31, 2009, in Hospice Austin's Christopher House. She was born May 14, 1928 in San Saba, Texas, to Archie and Bess Lindsey. She graduated from San Saba High School and attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, where she met Keith Robertson, a young ministerial student.

She will be working in the Emergency Room at Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital in San Angelo. Melissa is a former graduate of Richland Springs High School. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met May 28, 2009 for play day with the Chair for May, Bobbie Churchill, calling for a game of ‘Mutt and Jeff’, which is counting only the par fives and par threes plus one extra hole less half your handicap. First Place went to Jo Anne Hardy, who also scored the Low Net for the day with a 68!

Well, after a long layoff due to the flu we finally got to run at the Regional Track Meet. The girls competed well and we ALMOST had a State Qualifier in two events. Danessa Vasquez finished third in both the 1600 and 3200. She competed well and displayed DILLO PRIDE in both events but came up a bit short.

The next GED Test at Gatesville High School will be given June 9 and 10. Individuals wishing to take the test June 9 and 10 must complete registration some time between 5 and 7 p.m. on June 3. Be prepared to spend 30 minutes to an hour when registering. You need to bring with you a current state or federal photo ID, Social Security Card, and $65 fee for the test.
