San Saba ISD has been awarded a loss prevention grant of $4,000 from the TASB Risk Management Fund. Grant monies will help implement loss prevention and safety initiatives to reduce the potential for property losses and on-the-job injuries and raise safety awareness. This award is part of $550,000 in grants the Fund gave this year to 200 Texas school districts and educational entities.

The San Saba County Friends of the NRA Banquet will be held Thursday, June 4th at the San Saba Civic Center. Banquet tickets are still available at Arrowhead Bank, Hamrick’s Automotive, and at Cherokee Grocery. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 325-622-4393 or 325-372-6425. The banquet will feature a meal, catered by Gage’s BBQ, and various auctions and drawings for firearms and related merchandise including wildlife art, knives, home décor and more.

For the past few years, the SSVFD has vigorously sought out grants for state and federal funds to update our grass trucks. Some of these vehicles are very old and sometimes inoperable. Recently, the SSVFD was awarded a grant from the Texas Forest Service for a slip-on pump unit. This left the SSVFD with the responsibility of acquiring a chassis-cab for completion of this project.

The City Council of the City of San Saba, Texas met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, May 19th, at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present. Martha Leigh Whitten gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Mayor Jordan administered the Oath of Office to the winning candidates who were elected during the recent voting period.

Washing fruits and vegetables correctly is very important. The Food and Drug Administration recommend the following preparation tips for fresh produce (http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2007/207_foodsafety.html. *Pre-cut, bagged produce items like lettuce are very popular in grocery stores. If it is pre-washed, it will be stated on the packaging. No further washing is necessary for these pre-washed items. *As a precautionary measure, you may wash the produce just before you use it.

Saturday, May 16th, Travis McGuire, son of Delton and Valerie McGuire graduated from Southern Methodist University. He was given the honor of singing the National Anthem for the graduation Commencement program. Travis received his Masters Degree in Vocal Performance. He will continue his studies there at SMU. Our graduates will reach another milestone in their young lives as they graduate from high school. With graduation comes the next phase of their lives, whatever that may be. For some it will be college, others will join the work force and some may join the military to defend the freedoms we all hold so dear.

They will speak on House Bill 246 which is the results of the Perot meeting on education. The rain this weekend left more than one half of an inch around the Bend and over an inch in some places. It came at the just right time to benefit the gardens and make the grass grow so no one will get out of practice mowing. After the rain it seems to grow a foot overnight (a bit of stretching the truth), but sure everyone knows it seems that way. It may have put a damper (no pun intended) on some of the biker’s plans for the long weekend.

I decided to start the column a little earlier this week since I had all that trouble last week! There is nothing worse than having all your work wiped out late on Sunday. Mind you, isn’t that the way it always goes? I came in from San Antonio after a wet weekend with my San Antonio grandkids, sat down to write the column and zap!

While I was attending Bible College years ago, I was invited to help start a Bible study at a large industrial plant. Several people wanted to meet during their lunch break and study the Bible. The first meeting was interesting because there was a mixture of executives, supervisors, secretaries and blue-collar workers.

At 91, Bertha Griffay thrives on staying busy. An avid collector, she owns a local antique store where she still works daily. She is an amazing quilter, too. Her unique designs are sought after. By the time she puts the finishing touches on one, it is already sold.

Matt and Elizabeth Workman are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Madelyn Elizabeth Grace, born April 9th, at 9:53 a.m. at Providence Health Center in Waco. Maddy Grace weighed 8 lbs. 9 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long. She was welcomed home by maternal grandmother Elizabeth Robinson of Lafayette, LA.

Llano Fine Arts Guild will meet on Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m. in the Gallery at 503 Bessemer. One of our Guild members, Sylvia Ewing, has planned an exciting demonstration on the techniques of mosaic glass. Better still, this is a hands on event, as each person in attendance will be able to make their own glass mosaic during the allotted two hours for the program.

The Pierian Study Club held it’s annual end of year Guest Party and this year it was a delightful Cajun Shrimp Boil! The date was May 14, 2009 at the beautiful Mill Pond Park Gazebo. The Gazebo was decorated with turquoise table cloths with turquoise and tangerine accessories. Each table was adorned with a minature pier with nets and an alligator in keeping with the Cajun theme and lush greenery throughout the Gazebo.

From May 18 to May 31, law enforcement officers across the state will conduct the eighth “Click It or Ticket” enforcement mobilization to remind drivers and passengers to buckle up. “We continue to participate in “Click It or Ticket” because there are still about 9 percent of Texans who are not buckling up,” said Texas Highway Patrol Chief David Baker.

The Randolph family of Cherokee would like to announce the upcoming marriage of Coby Randolph and Ana Vasquez. The wedding will take place June 13, 2009 in Fredericksburg. Coby is the son of Nettie Jean and the late Charles Randolph of Cherokee. I’m sure, by now, that most of you have figured out just about how much rainfall we got at respective areas around the County. Seems like most folks around town got anywhere from a little over ¾ of an inch up to 1.5”. Marvin Riggs said he got around 2 inches at the ol’ Roberds’ place at Algerita, while some folks on the Pecan Grove Rd.

McKenna Maxcey, a 6th grader at San Saba Middle School and the 12 year old daughter of Reagan and Marcie Maxcey is heading to the Junior High State Rodeo Finals in Gonzales, Texas. McKenna will compete for one week in barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping, and ribbon roping. McKenna has been competing in Region 10 qualifying rodeos since September 2008.

The Texas High School Rodeo Association Reg. 10 season has come to an end. Three San Saba Cowboys did very well, when the dust settled. In the Team Roping San Saba's Morgan Gilger and Ross Williams won the Region and a spot at the state finals in Abilene, Tx. in June.

TROPHY TURNIP———————This trophy sized turnip came from the Glenn Grumbles Garden & Produce place up off Annex. Skeeter has been farming his extensive garden for years as many of the vegetable lovers around town will attest. Some of his other items soon to be available include squash, onions, tomatoes, & peppers, with okra following later on.

Jerry Dale Thomas of Brady and San Saba, was killed in an automobile accident on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at the age of 63. Also killed in the accident was his beloved dog, Missy. Jerry Thomas was born June 11, 1945 in Mason County to Carlos and Anna Bess Thomas.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met May 21, 2009 for play day with the Chair for May, Bobbie Churchill, calling for a game of playing the pink ball, that is rotating the ball to each player and that is the score for the team. If you lose your ball then the game reverts to the lowest scoring team.

When Mrs. Angela Schultz came to Richland Springs to teach Spanish and art, she noticed an unsightly, concrete object in the middle of the courtyard between the high school and the first row of elementary buildings. Alumni remember that object as the old water fountain. The water fountain had been repaired several times through the years, but in the early 1990s the pipes froze and burst inside the concrete.

The San Saba Armadillo Baseball team finished the season losing 2 games in the bi-district round against a good Grape Creek team. The Dillos had a great season going to the playoffs for the second year in a row and we all should be proud of them.Thanks to the San Saba community for all of there support. The district 8-2a All- District Baseball team has been announced and the Armadillos are well represented.

San Saba High School Girls Basketball team competed in and won the Mason Spring Shoot Out on May 22 and May 23. They defeated Junction, Coleman, and Lorena in pool play. They were seated #1 in tournament play where they defeated Mason, Coleman and San Angelo to win the tournament. The girls won 6 games in 26 hours.

The final bell for summer will ring in a few short days. This has truly been the fastest year of my educational career. Much has happened to make this year the most exciting and the most challenging of my career. However, the students, parents and of course the best staff in the state of Texas has made the 2008-2009 school year the best yet.

Two Richland Springs natives received honors at Howard Payne University for the spring 2009. Kendra Brockman and Laurie Sloane were named to the Honor Roll. Students must earn a 4.0 grade point average to be named to the President’s List, a 3.65-3.99 grade point average to be named to the Dean’s List, and a 3.5-3.64 grade point average to be named to the Honor Roll.

On Tuesday and Wednesday May 19th and 20th Diego Gonzalez and Hayden Oliver competed in the regional track meet in Odessa. Both young men ended up 14th in their races. Hayden competed in the 100 meter dash and Diego competed in the Mile and Two mile. The two of them competed to the best of their abilities and as coaches we were very proud of them and we look forward to seeing them make it back to Odessa next year.
