After 11 years of offering crisis intervention services and shelter to victims of domestic violence, the Dove Project will be forced to shut its doors on May 31. This came after the Office of the Attorney General, Criminal Justice Division notification that they were changing their fiscal year to start on September 1 rather than on July 1 and they would only be reimbursing the project for 40% of their monthly budget.

The American Dietetic Association recently did a national telephone survey. They asked Americans reasons why they failed to have a balanced diet. The most common reason they gave was they did not want to give up foods that they liked. This answer reflects a belief that healthy eating means giving up certain foods.

A few weeks ago the Kentucky Derby was completed for another year. Mine That Bird won this year's Derby. The amazing thing about this was that the horse and rider were far back in the pack at one point. After being so far back, you would think that they would not have a chance to win, especially when it was a 50-1 odds to win.

We woke up Saturday morning to cloudy, rainy skies, but we went ahead with the Elm Grove Picnic anyway. It was nice and cool and we had to eat in the building but there was plenty of room. The crowd was somewhat smaller, I guess the rain scared them off.

Next Monday will be Memorial Day and we are planning a special service at our local cemetery to honor those who have given their lives in war for our country.
It was originally called Decoration Day and started after the American Civil War. In 1886, May 30 was designated as the day to honor them but in 1971, it was changed to the last Monday of May.

This is the second time I have written this report tonight. I just finished the last one and the power went out. My document is out there somewhere but my computer doesn’t want to cough it up! I’m not sure why the lights went out, but here I am starting over!
Our scenery is absolutely breathtaking after all this rain.

May 17-23 is National Emergency Medical Services week. This is our opportunity to honor the men and women who respond to life threatening emergencies in our community. Most people don't really think about EMS until they have to make that 9-1-1 call, and then they are relieved to find that EMS arrives with equipment and training to take control.

In 2008, the DPS Motorcycle Operator Training Program trained a record-number 41,000 motorcycle operators, up from 33,697 in 2007. But all that training isn’t enough to ensure the safety of motorcycle operators. Drivers of other vehicles, who share Texas roadways with 908,665 licensed motorcyclists, must make a conscious effort to look for motorcyclists.
Almost 400 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in 2007; preliminary fatality reports for 2008 also indicate an increase in fatalities.

Traditional observance of Memorial Day has diminished over the years. Many Americans today have forgotten the meaning and the traditions of Memorial Day. People often confuse the day with Veterans Day (November 11th), and make mention of their sacrifice. Still others think the day is to honor all of the dead.

There were a total of 64 individuals booked into the county jail during that period of time.
