The 1st Annual San Saba Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, March 12th at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. The theme for this year's banquet is "It's About to Get Western," and the public is invited to attend and encouraged to dress in western attire if they wish. Guest speaker will be State Representative,Harvey Hilderbran.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) closed on three tracts of land in San Saba on February 2nd. Known tentatively as Mill Creek Nature Park, the approximately 38.77-acre property will be the first LCRA-owned park in San Saba County. The properties are located east of downtown San Saba and include extensive frontage on the San Saba River and historic, spring-fed Mill Creek.

It continues to fall. It has fallen more than half what it was several years ago. Not only that but it doesn’t seem that there is going to be a stop any time soon. It will continue to fall. As a result of this there are many anxious people. Not only are they anxious but they are not as well off as they expected to be right now in their life.

50 Years Ago March 12, 1959 An all day rabbit drive will be held in the Bethel Community Saturday, March 14, announced C.I. Munsell. Hunters will meet at 9 a.m. at the Bethel school house; dinner will be served at the noon hour, followed by another hunt in the afternoon. Still no rain, but we do have some in the forecast for the next few days. We had a surprise visit Saturday morning from Wayne and David Mitchel. We hadn’t seen them in a while and it was good to hear that they are doing well. David and his brother, Daniel, are both married and Daniel has a baby boy.

One would surely think that 2 months of constant windy weather would at least blow up a bit of rain. Most of the folks that I’ve been visiting with on the subject as of late have been keeping their fingers crossed for the percentage promised the past few days. Dear Editor, The students in the BCIS II class at San Saba High School are currently trying to raise funds to purchase an inflatable run through tunnel for the football team and other extra curricular activities. Our class was asked to conduct and analyze trends and changes, identify a problem and determine solutions and recommendations.

It was so easy to tell the good branches from the dead ones in the middle of winter. My wife and I will go outside and look over each tree and discuss what branches need to come out. Later on, we get out the ladder, the electric saw and the pruning paint.

It was Chester (played by Dennis Weaver), and perhaps you’ll remember that Chester walked with a limp, the origin of which I never learned. We had a small 20 percent chance of rain Sunday and again Monday. As of Monday afternoon nothing was coming down. Even with it being so dry the fruit trees is in full bloom around the Bend and other parts of the county. With the temperature going crazy it seems we are going into summer and skipping spring all together.

Another beautiful week filled with sunshine and wind, but no rain for our thirsty land. The stories from farmers and ranchers are just a little more tense and negative. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, farmers and ranchers are incredible people. Unless they have unlimited water at their disposal, there is very little they can do to assure their own success.

The Central Texas College (CTC) Continuing Education Department ends the month of March with new writing, cooking and line dancing classes. Registration is now underway for the following non-credit courses. Line Dancing: Learn basic line dance moves and dance floor etiquette followed by intermediate and advanced steps. The class consists of demonstration with music and step-by-step instruction.

Starting Sunday, March 15th, the community of Richland Springs will host a free meal from 12:00 - 2:30 p.m. at the Richland Springs Fire Station. Invited for the free meal are: travelers passing through, all churches, friends, family and neighbors. This event will be the third Sunday of each month.

Mapping Texas and the New World, a new exhibit opening Thursday March 19 at the Mason Square Museum features maps as early as 1595 by Giovanni Antonio Magini and Ignazio Porro. The display includes early cartography showing the shores of the new world only a hundred years after its discovery.

On Wednesday evening, March 4, 2009, the members of the Richland Springs First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) CWF met for their monthly meeting in the fellowship hall of the church. The Richland Springs High School One Act Play, All My Sons by Arthur Miller, was performed at Brownwood High School on Friday, March 6th for critic, Larry Mathis in a One Act Play Festival. Students will be performing their UIL competition show for the public in the Richland Springs Cafetorium on Monday night, March 23rd.

As far as winter seasons go, the winter of 2008-2009 was fairly mild and uneventful. It won’t go down in the record books as being particularly memorable. While we experienced several strong cold fronts and did see several freezes, the cold weather was generally brief with the mild air returning fairly quickly.

Audrey Whitley, 91, of San Saba, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009 in San Saba. Audrey was born September 16, 1917, in Durant, Mississippi, the daughter of Plez J. McGuffee and Arie Brown McGuffee. On April 3, 1936 Warwick Whitley and Audrey McGuffee were married in Oakdale, LA. She attended the Methodist Church.

Robert “Bob” Martin Wells, age 58, passed away in the arms of his Saviour at his home near Norton on Sunday, March 1st. This past week the Dillo baseball team played 4 games going 2 and 2 in preparation for this weeks district opener and the Mill Pond Classic. This past Tuesday, March 3rd, the Varsity Baseball team traveled to Fredericksburg Heritage and won 17-0 with Ryan Parks and Martin Vega having a great game.

The basketball All-District selections for District 8-AA were announced late last week after Brady was eliminated from the playoffs. On Friday, March 6th, the Lady Dillos battled the Lady Bulldogs of Hamilton. The Lady Dillos picked up the win 14-11. Katy Davis earned the victory and Tarah Crosby earned the save. Great hitting and much improved defense were the keys to victory. Bianca Dawson started the game by striking out 5 of the first 6 batters she faced.

Richland Springs natives Kendra Brockman, Jana Gibson, Cason Fikes and Laurie Slone received honors at Howard Payne University (HPU). On Thursday, March 5th the high school boys competed in a track meet at DeLeon. These young men should be congratulated on the fine job they did in their first meet. All of our athletes finished at least 10th or better in all of their events. Every one of them competed to the best of their abilities and as coaches we were very proud of them.With their attitude and willingness to work hard they will become better track athletes and better athletes over all.

On Friday, March 6th, the 7th and 8th grade boys competed in a track meet at Hico. These young men should be congratulated on the fine job. Both teams showed huge improvements in time and distance from the previous meet, and they should be commended for their outstanding performance. The San Saba Independent School District Board of Trustees met for a Regular Meeting on Monday, March 9th at the Central Administration Office at 7 p.m. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order followed by the invocation. Everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. The San Saba Lady Dillos and Coach Tony Taylor were in attendance at the beginning of the meeting.

The San Saba Jr. High Lady Dillos traveled to Hico last Friday, March 6, 2009, to participate in the Hico Jr. High Track Meet. The 8th Grade, though hampered by a key injury, still finished in second place with 136.5 points. The 7th Grade improved from 49 points last week to 78 points this time for a fourth place.

Five San Saba boys power lifters will be competing this Saturday, March 14th at Waco Connally Junior High in the Regional Power Lifting meet. These guys definitely deserve a pat on the back and words of encouragement as they embark upon this regional competition. The San Saba Tennis Team played in the Region V 2A & Under State Team Tennis Tournament on March 6-7. The tennis team came in second place and this qualifies them for the state team tennis tournament on March 13-14 in Round Rock. In the regional quarterfinal match San Saba defeated Lago Vista 16 to 3.
