It’s time to consider your student’s future and the challenges presented by increasing costs of higher education. To help you prepare, a free financial aid orientation will be held on Thursday, January 8th, at 6:00 p.m. in the San Saba High School cafeteria. The program should last about an hour and will cover the steps in completing the general application form (FAFSA), stress the importance of grants and scholarships, and explain the nature of student and parent loans.

McIntosh earned a spot on the 2A team as offensive lineman and Pairett was picked for the Super Team at inside linebacker.

Chris Pappas, center, recently retired as bookkeeper for the San Saba Soil & Water Conservation District after 19 years of service. Chris was honored with a retirement luncheon and was presented a plaque on December 31st. Presenting the plaque to Chris is C.K. Stevenson, Chairman of the District and Mitchell Schroeder, District Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Texas Forest Service is delivering funds to more than 900 Texas fire departments. Through a legislative grant, TFS is distributing $5.7 million to departments that helped fight wildfires during the 2005-06 wildfire season. We just received a little drizzle along with the cold front that came through our area Sunday night. I doubt it was even enough to measure. As we all know, we are desperate for rain. Most of the stock tanks are dry. I suppose the deer can sneak a drink from water troughs, but I wonder about the small animals.

Our fair Valley of the Pecan has certainly seen our share of good ol’ Texas weather as of late. We have ranged the spectrum from freezing weather, to typhoon type gales, to fair weather on to some downright hot weather. While we have been experiencing some of the most dry times since the middle of the drought in ’54, we were fortunate enough to get a wee bit of moisture during the earlier part of the week.

Woke up Monday morning to see some moisture falling and very cold. No ice but a cold north wind which made it seem colder than what it was. The New Year came in with very little fan fare in the Bend Community. Barbara Jones reported that she attended a celebration held at the Live Oak Extension building with about twenty people who danced their way into 2009. Barbara Jones was in to see her doctor and he scheduled an angiogram test to be done Friday, January 9.

Welcome to the first column of 2009. The New Year has started off with a strange twist. First we have record highs, and now old man winter has decided to pay us a visit. Although we desperately need precipitation, I’d prefer not to have the frozen stuff! It will be hard enough to get the kids back into the school mode without weather distractions.

Ross McSwain was unable to come to San Saba on Tuesday, January 6th to talk about his new book. See No Evil, Speak No Evil, A History of Mob Violence in the Texas Heartland 1869-1904. The Historical Commission will invite him again in the near future. Funeral services for Ann Jackson, age 62, of Richland Springs, were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3 at the Netherton Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Calvin Williams officiating. Barbara Ketchum Brown of Corpus Christi passed away Saturday, January 3, 2009 in a health care facility in Portland, TX. Barbara was born July 30, 1941 in San Saba County, the daughter of Elvin Ketchum and Bernice Felts Ketchum. Barbara is survived by her husband, Charles Brown of Corpus Christi; one son, Warren Brown of Brady; one daughter, Kathryn Bassham of Corpus Christi.

Lelan Varnadore 75 of Coleman, passed away Sunday January 4, 2009 at his residence in Coleman. Lelan was born June 17, 1933 in McCamey, Texas, the son of Cue Howard Varnadore and Kathryn Johnson Varnadore. Sammie L. Jeffrey age 101, of Seguin, Texas, died Thursday January 1, 2009. Funeral services were held Saturday January 3, at Howell-Doran Funeral Home in San Saba at 2:00 PM with burial at the Richland Springs Cemetery. Velma Brown 98 of Richland Springs, passed away Saturday January 3, 2008 in a health care facility in Goldthwaite. Velma was born August 26, 1910, in Lakeview, Texas the daughter of Rand Strickland and Frances Elms Strickland. On November 22, 1928 Velma Strickland and Newton Carlton Brown were married in the Methodist Parsonage in Richland Springs.

The district will continue benchmark testing in math in efforts to prepare students and staff for the upcoming TAKS tests. Students who don’t pass the benchmark tests will be assigned mandatory after-school TAKS tutoring until they can pass the TAKS tutoring benchmark. The Lady Coyotes basketball team now 12-5 on the season.

The Jr. High girls lost to Lohn and the Jr. High boys also lost to Lohn in their last game before the holidays. The Lady Indians finished in 3rd place at the Richland Springs Hardwood Classic basketball tournament last week. The Lady Indians defeated Lometa, lost to Lingleville, and defeated TLC (San Angelo) for the 3rd place win. The Region IV All-Region football team includes 3 Indians.

2008 has come and gone….where do all the years go? For the last 14 years, I have had the pleasure of living and working in San Saba for San Saba ISD. During my time at San Saba ISD, I have had the opportunity of working for many wonderful School Board Members.
