The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce held their annual Christmas on the Square event during the weekend of December 13th and 14th. The weekend started on Friday evening, with the judging of business and home decorations. The winner for best business decorations and the recipient of the perpetual trophy for 2008 was City National Bank.

Rosendo (Chan) Jimenez and Brenda Espinoza were united in Marriage on November 29, 2008, at Notre Dame Social Center in Kerrville, Texas. Rosendo is the son of Jesus and Juana Jimenez. Brenda is the daughter of Ismael and Conseulo Espinoza of Kerrville. The bride was walked down the isle by her son Logan.

Students volunteered their talents in community serviceto help raise funds for the Richland Springs Preservation Socity who in turn helps to revitalize Richland Springs’ historic bank building. The play, It’s Sad, So Sad When an Elf Goes Bad was presented last week at a dinner/theatre at the Richland Springs cafetorium.

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD was held December 11th in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. followed by the invocation and everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. An Audit Report by Kline and Krause of Fredricksburg was outlined by Patrick Kline.

Far too many people are ignorant of what happens at death, and confused as to what kind of body we will have in Heaven. If we believe the above scripture we will also believe we will not have a body of flesh and blood like we now have.

Children need toys just as adults needs tools for their particular jobs because play is often described as the work of children. Even children who lack commercially produced toys will find playthings such as fingers and toes, pots and pans, and hills and trees. The national average for the number of toys a child receives during the holiday season is about 12.

The Lady Indians won the Cherokee Basketball Tournament last weekend. Keith Davis would like to thank everyone that made the Concession Stand a success. He wants to thank the parents, the Cherokee Community, The Cherokee Home, The County Boys, Cherokee Grocery, G & R Grocery, Cherokee School Faculty and the Cherokee Student Body. Remember the Christmas Party at the Methodist Church on Saturday night.

One of the miracles that Jesus performed while on this earth was one that He did not intend to do. A synagogue official came to Jesus requesting He come because His daughter had just died. Jesus arose and followed this man. As he was going there were crowds of people following and bumping into one another.

Today (Monday) has been a very cold day! The thermometer has not risen above 30 degrees all day. Sunday was a beautiful day. We had the grandkids for the weekend and they enjoyed playing outside in the afternoon. There is still no chance for any moisture in the forecast. Even Houston received snow last week, but not here.

Receipts totaled 7217 head for the week. The market was very active and strong on a choice offering of cattle with stocker steers selling $5 higher and heifers $8 higher with good demand. The feeder steers sold $3 higher and heifers were $4 higher. Packer cows and bulls were steady to $2 higher. Rep.

Sunday was a beautiful day with very little wind and warm. It seems after a good day we have to be prepared to face some bad weather. Woke up Monday to a very cold morning with the wind blowing out of the North. It felt like it was coming from the North Pole and according to the news it will be even colder Tuesday and the rest of the week will also be cold.

I zipped over to San Antonio this weekend to see my granddaughter’s gymnastics pageant. I think I’m suffering from sympathy pains! I don’t know how in the world you can do such awful things to your body and come out smiling! I feel as if I’ve aged 20 years! I thought I was pretty spry for an aging school teacher but I have disabused myself of that notion!

Last week I came home after dark and as I was getting out of my pickup and walking toward the house I looked up into the sky. It was so clear and so beautiful with so many stars. I just stopped and stood there in awe. Seeing those stars reminded me of an event that took place about two thousand years ago.

On November 22, 2008 Breana Leigh Kraft was crowned the 2009 Lampasas Today's' Baby. She will be traveling to Plano, Tx., in June 2009 to compete in the Today's Girls State Competition. Breana is the daughter of Wymond and Mindy Kraft and sister of Brenden Childers of San Saba. She is the granddaughter of Mike and Diane Wood of San Saba, Bruce & Ida Kraft of Waco, and Melvin & Rose Williams of Cherokee.

FIRST Ladies of the United Methodist Church in San Saba met on December 8, 2008 for their Christmas program. All the ladies brought wonderful food to share dinner together. After a short business meeting led by our president, Mrs. Nettie Oma Carpenter, the inspiring program was given by Barbara Gilger.

Showcasing the youth of San Saba County and their talents is what the 2009 San Saba County Youth Fair is all about. All youth are encouraged to enter several entries in the Fair to be held January 15-16. Categories include: food, educational, photography, poster, art, and crafts. Entries are to be taken to the Senior Center on January 15th from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

There is still time to get your raffle tickets for an Anna Wilson original framed watercolor of San Saba County Courthouse. The painting can be seen in the lobby at Arrowhead Bank where the drawing will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, December 19th. Tickets are available at Sugar Baker’s, Salon 111 and Arrowhead Bank. Raffle tickets are available from any garden club member or from the businesses above who have so generously offered to help display the painting.

Born September 13, 1941, Dennis Cordell Brooks of Seguin, Tx. passed away on December 5, 2008 in San Antonio, Tx. Dennis grew up in San Antonio attending Harlandale High School and was a member of Bellaire Baptist Church. He most recently resided in Seguin, Texas. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents JD and Addie Brooks.

Drew Newlin, 87, of San Saba passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at his home in San Saba. Drew was born January 14, 1921 in Hico, Texas the son of Arthur Newlin and Carrie Swails Newlin. On February 8, 1946 Thomas Andrew Newlin and Mozelle Todd were married in Hico, Texas.

On Tuesday, December 9, the Dillos hosted Goldthwaite. This was a rematch of the Championship game of our Tournament December 6th. After a slow starting first quarter for the Dillos, Goldthwaite led 20 – 5. With a little better shooting in the second quarter, the Dillos cut the Eagles lead to 10, trailing 31 -21.

The district will continue benchmark testing in Math after the Christmas break in hopes to improve student scores on the fast approaching TAKS testing. Students who don’t pass the benchmark tests will be assigned mandatory after-school TAKS tutoring until they can pass the TAKS tutoring benchmark. Come visit with your child’s teachers and get involved in your child’s education.

The Lady Dillos had a nice week of basketball as they captured five wins plus a Championship trophy at the Albany tournament. We opened up home play last week against the Lady Buffaloes of Florence and it was sure good to be home after a week of travel. We had a great half of basketball as we tallied 33 points in the first quarter and held a commanding 58-11 lead at halftime.

A Team - Back in November, we ended football and just four practices later we were playing our first game at Comanche on November 13. Our team members are: Aaron Perez, Russton Ellis, Isaac Zepeda, Ryan Guidroz, Russell Lowe, Michael McKinnerney, Sean Argote, and J.T. Mathis. We knew that Comanche was usually good at basketball, plus had an extra week of practices.

Over the weekend San Saba competed at the Hamilton Invitational. Losing their first game and winning the next four. Rio Vista defeated the Dillos 42-38. The next four games would show the true character of a team determined to win a championship. Wins over Hillsboro, Early and Rio Vista put the Dillos in the championship game against Hamilton.

The JV girls have had a couple good games the past two weeks improving to 8-3 for the season so far. We played against Florence JV last week and beat them 29-15. The girls came out a little sluggish in the first quarter but overall played well. They hadn’t played since the Tuesday before so they were a little out of the groove on playing.

Seven middle schools competed in the district 8AA UIL contest hosted by Early Middle School on December 5, 2008. The Lady Indians won the Cherokee Basketball Tournament. They defeated Mullin,Goldthwaite JV, and Lometa (67-46) to take the championship. Kayla Fry, Mysti Bessent, and Desirae Bessent were named to the All-Tournament team. The Lady Indian JV played a great game against Sidney on Friday, but failed to win. The Indians also lost both of their games. The Jr.

Christmas on the Square held over the weekend was absolutely wonderful!! The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce should be commended for planning such a great event. Much participation by many different groups was enjoyed by the large crowd. Children filled floats, many of the businesses sponsored floats, and the City of San Saba employees decorated their different pieces of equipment that added a unique touch to this very special event.

The San Saba 6th Grade Junior Lady Dillos presented booster club president Nancy Oliver with a check for the amount of $50. The Lady Dillos are working hard in preparation for their 2009 season opener at Burnet. Team members include McKenna Maxcey, Ashlyn Turner, Leigh Riggs, Hailey Osbourn, Joy Trujillo, Mercedes Hensley, Kayla Novak and Tori Bauerschlag.
