Grab your boots and don your cowboy hat on Saturday, Nov. 8 for the Second Annual Cowboy Up for Kids event, benefiting the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center and child victims in the Center’s seven county service area. Cowboy Up for Kids will be held from 6-10 p.m. at Boulder Creek Farms, located seven miles east of Marble Falls on FM 1431.

Megan Cisneroz, a former San Saba graduate now attending Angelo State University, recently finished her fall golf schedule at The Schreiner Fall Golf Classic in Kerrville, Texas. The Rambelles won their first ever collegiate event, with Megan finishing as the runner-up individual title.

Hunters hoping for a shot at a quality deer during the 2008-09 deer season will need to get off the bench and into the game, suggest state wildlife biologists, as current range conditions indicate increased availability of native food sources. The general deer hunting season opens statewide November 1st. This change in deer feeding patterns could also have had an impact on opportunity around feeders during the Special Youth Season weekend that was held October 25-26.

The Alamo A's Model A Ford Club visited various locations in San Saba County this past Saturday. The 25 Model A's built between 1928 - 1931 were on display at the Courthouse Square for the public to view.

Think of Halloween as a great occasion to play dress up extraordinaire, and try to take a moderate stand on the candy. Preference for sweet foods is not a human failing—it’s simply human nature. Candy is fine in moderation, and kids and adults love it. However, it’s difficult to eat anything in moderation in our society!

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.” (Proverbs 25:11) The above verse of scripture paints a beautiful picture, doesn’t it? Picture a golden apple. Perhaps it is setting on a silver tray. The light shines upon it and it sparkles. When I picture this in my mind I see these precious metals that anyone would love to have in their possession.

100 Years Ago October 29, 1908 W.C. Locker was here from Richland Springs last Friday and reports about 1500 bales of cotton ginned to date at his Richland gins. J.L. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met October 23, 2008 for play day with the Chair for October, Dorothy Sterner, calling for a game of Low Gross and Low Putts. Sandee Hartley won first Low Gross and second Low Putts while Anita Miles won first Low Putts and second Low Gross.

Dear Editor, Over the weekend of 24-26 October, 2008, our car club, the Alamo A's Model A Ford Club, visited your town. Tony was very helpful in the planning of our stay. Normally she does not have them but lately she has been rolling and scratching especially at night because she has gotten fleas. Anyway, I love that little dog and she goes with me a lot and I have even made her a little bed in my pickup from one of my old jackets.

The judge takes pity. "Thirty days and five hundred dollars." It's short time and a small fine. The Bible makes an interesting statement with regard to courts and judges.

Still no rain and the weather can’t decide to remain cool or stay on the warm side. Sunday it went back to the summer temps in the 80’s, but early Monday the morning temp was very brisk. There was a couple of days with a light frost, but the trees aren’t shedding their leaves as of yet.

The Coyote Booster Club will host their 2nd Annual Chili Supper/BINGO Night on Sat. Nov. 8th at the Richland Springs Cafetorium. The Chili Supper starts at 5:30 p.m. and BINGO will start around 7:30 p.m. Last years event was a huge success for the Booster Club! This is one of the Coyote Booster Clubs big fundraisers throughout the year.

Our Brown-Eyed Girl! Pantera Levanna Lively was born on September 16, 2008, weighing in at 7pounds 5oz, 19 1/4" to Melanie Alcorn and Austin Lively. Both parents are graduates of San Saba High School and now reside at the Lively Ranch. Pantera’s grandparents are Shannon Hampu and Barry Lively of the Chappel community and Alma Cardenas and Travis Alcorn of San Saba.

The family of Evelyn Lucille Wheeler Christian gathered for a Chapter Memorial Service in honor of her being a direct descendant of a citizen of the Republic of Texas. The Daughters of the Republic, San Saba River Chapter, conducted the ceremony at the Richland Springs Cemetery on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

The newly formed groups of Wildflowers and Riverbend will be appearing on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Pecan Capitol Trade Day on the square in San Saba. The members study at Performance Talent under the direction of Kay Lynn Scott and Kyla Duncan. The Today's Girl Organization and the Performance students have joined forces to help Glenda Ragland who has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder.

The San Saba Garden Club met at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7th. President Nancy Nelson called the meeting to order. A business meeting was conducted, and this included the annual December Tour of Homes. It was agreed that the club forgo the tour this year because of difficulty in finding interested homeowners.

The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge will meet Saturday evening, November 1st at the lodge hall in San Saba. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, San Saba River Chapter gather to dedicate a Memorial Marker for James Thomas Christian, a citizen of the Republic of Texas, (1836 to 19 February 1846). Patsy Stewart began the ceremony with the invocation followed by the Boy Scouts of America, San Saba Troop #55, presenting the colors and leading in the pledge to the United States Flag and the Texas flag.

On November 1, 2008 in San Saba, TX., the Today's Girl Youth Organization will perform a community service activity benefitting Glenda Ragland who was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The girls will be accepting donations to help ease the stress of finances for her room and board while she is receiving treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Glenda was a pageant director for several years.

It’s another year and the San Saba 4-H County Food show made its much anticipated arrival this Sunday Oct. 19th. The young cooks were pumped and the tension tight. Walking into the Courthouse you smell the fierce competition along with the tasty dishes. The 4-H’ers take in the competition around them and scope out possible scoring opportunities.

Operation Orphans, Inc. is enjoying the 49th season of taking less fortunate children from Texas child care facilities hunting in the hill country. During the "Youth Only" weekend of October 25th, Operation Orphans, Inc. hosted 54 girls from nine children facilities. Four additional hunts will follow on November 15, November 22, December 6, and December 13.

Ann (Bourke) Curphey, 64, of San Saba, passed away Monday, October 20, 2008 in Temple, Texas. She was born June 28, 1944 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Raymond Bourke and Florence Rogers Bourke. She is survived by her father Raymond Bourke of San Saba; two sons: Docklan McMeans of San Saba and Raymond Grammer of Fort Worth, TX.

Candy Romero, 20, of San Saba, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2008 in Temple, Texas. She was born June 11, 1988 in San Saba, Texas the daughter of Juan Romero and Theresa Cooley Romero. Candy attended San Saba ISD, was a four-year member of the FCCLA and a member of the graduating class of 2006.

Dr. Braswell Locker entered into Glory with his Lord early Saturday morning, October 25, 2008. Born November 16, 1914 to Dr. Harry Loy Locker and Altha Eckert Locker in Winchell, TX, delivered by his father because there were no telephones and his uncle, Dr. S.B. Locker didn't make it in time.

William (Bill) Paxton Dyer, 76, passed away on Oct. 27, 2008 in San Saba, TX. He was born on a farm in Tahoka, TX, one of eight children to James and Carrie Fern Dyer. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jonnie Hanna Dyer. They were married Nov. 23, 1950 in San Angelo. The 7th Dillos made the long road trip to Junction last Thursday to take on the Eagles. The Dillos were finally able to do something they haven't been able to do all year, get a road win. From the first whistle to the last, the Dillos took care of business. Kolton Ellis fielded the Eagles kickoff and managed to gain 10 yards on the return.

San Saba 8th Grade Dillos traveled to Junction last Thursday night and brought home an impressive 24-14 victory over a good Junction 8th Grade Team. Junction kicked to San Saba to begin the game. J.T. Mathis returned the kick for the Dillos. Sean Argote was the workhorse again this week.

A good crowd cheered the varsity Coyotes to a 62-0 victory over the Rochelle Hornets in the third game of district play. The Varsity Coyotes are now 8-0 on the year and 3-0 in district! The Varsity Coyotes play Santa Anna at Santa Anna at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31st.

The #4 State ranked Richland Springs Coyotes took the Rochelle Hornets behind the ol' wood shed last Friday night and came out with a 62-0 win. The Coyotes showed total domination on both sides of the ball all night long. The game was called at the half because of the 45 point mercy rule.

The JV Dillo football team took the field against the Early Longhorns and played a really hard fought game. Offensively, the Dillos moved the ball well on the ground, but had a couple of drives come up short. The offensive line battled hard and blocked for the Dillo ball carriers that ran hard all night.

The San Saba Armadillos had an open week last weekend. It gave the players a chance to rest and help some injuries to heal. San Saba still has a chance at the playoffs despite their 1 - 3 record in district. The Dillos have been led by Gary Gant and Jack Whitten for most of the year.

San Saba High School will be honoring our Varsity Football Players, Senior Band, Senior Cheerleader and Senior Drill Team members and their parents on Friday, October 31st. This event will take place prior to pre-game festivities. All parents that are involved are asked to meet at the west end zone of Rogan Field at 6:40 p.m.

The San Saba Youth Girls Basketball League has reached the midway point of the season with the Lady Extreme leading the 5th/6th grade division with a perfect 4-0 record. The Lady Extreme are followed by the second place Lady Bullets and third place Lady Swish. Although the Lady Extreme are undefeated, the largest margin of victory they have managed has been a 6 point win over the Lady Bullets and a 4 point win over the Lady Swish which shows how competitive this division is. On a cool windy day, District 8-AA met at the golf course at Coleman to run off the district cross country meet. San Saba’s Rebecca Parades and Danessa Vasquez both qualified for regional in Lubbock on November 8, 2008. Team winners were Brady in the girls and Comanche in the boys.

The Jr. High lost to Zephyr last Thursday, 19-25. E.J. Borchers scored a touchdown on a run and another one on a pass from Stephen Austermann. He also caught a pass from Austermann for a PAT. Baylor Jordan scored one touchdown on a pass from Austermann. The Indians lost to Zephyr last Friday night 70-84.

Beginning last school year, schools across Texas began administering the FITNESSGRAM physical fitness assessment. Senate Bill 530 requires that all students in grades 3 – 12 participate in the annual physical fitness assessment. We have just completed our first round of FITNESSGRAM assessment in 9th grade and many other grade levels throughout the District are working on the performance skills in their PE classes.

Three Seniors will be back for their final season together when the Lady Dillos hit the hardwood on November 3rd in a scrimmage at Burnet. Sixman fans were treated to another super football game Friday night when the Cherokee Indians took on the Zephyr Bulldogs. It was a fight to the finish, but the Bulldogs scored three unanswered touchdowns in the last 14 minutes of the game to top the Indians 70-84. While the Indians played a tremendous game, the mistakes that were made proved costly against Zephyr’s offensive powerhouse.
