The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees met for a regular board meeting on Monday, October 13th at 7 p.m. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order followed by the invocation and the pledges to the American and Texas flags. There were no Public Comments. Bradley Cummins made a presentation of his 20 day trip which the Board of Trustees supported him with $1,000.

Volunteer firefighters around the county continue to be busy with grass fires. San Saba Volunteer Fire Department responded to this fire last Thursday, near the Henry Reeves residence on C.R. 114 in the northeast part of the county.

The San Saba County Health Fair will be Tuesday, November 4th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Civic Center. The annual event is sponsored by the Brownwood Regional Medical Center, the Llano Memorial Health Care System, and the Wellness Task Force of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Approximately 50 exhibitors will be at this year’s Health Fair.

If it seems like you are spending more and more money every time you go to the grocery store, you are right. Food prices are increasing and have been for the past couple of years. According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, food prices increased 4% between 2006 and 2007 and that was the highest annual increase in the price of food since 1990.

Doug and Cyndi Suggs and Jeremy spent last week-end in LaPort and the Houston area visiting children and grandchildren. They spent time helping Tiffany clean up her yard and pack some of her belongings. They also helped Sydnie, their granddaughter celebrate her 18th birthday. The Cherokee Home for Children staff and children went to Glen Rose to the play “The Promise” last Saturday night.

This past week we were fortunate enough to go to the Gulf Coast and visit with our children. It was amazing to see some of the things that happened during the recent hurricane when it hit the coast. Signs were twisted and some even gone. In one area there was a boat on a high bank.

100 Years Ago October 15, 1908 With a good cash market for chickens, turkeys, eggs and butter and railroad prices for cotton, wheat and pecans what is the reason San Saba county is not the best county in west Texas. At the First National Bank is a sample of Harvel Improved cotton which is good to look upon.

It has drizzled all day and we have collected only .25 of an inch of rain. Hopefully it will amount to a little bit more before it is all over. We were very saddened last week by the death of our friend and neighbor, Linda Tharp, after a battle with cancer.

Here’s hoping that most of you had a quiet, enjoyable Holiday on Monday. Celebrating Columbus Day seemed a lot more exciting when we were in the 3rd grade than it does now-days. Mrs. Stroble had a way of making a lot of things more exciting and/or interesting. I will also admit that quite a number of things seemed more interesting to a 9 yr.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association was well represented this past week at the semi annual Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Association tournament in Huntsville, Texas. We had two big winners! Sandee Hartley won second low net in the Sixth Flight! This was the first win for Sandee and we were proud of her.

After the good rain that everyone received last week things are beginning to look up. Monday the day started off with a light drizzle and the promise of more rain, but as of 3:00 p.m. Monday no rain just a cloudy day. Last week it was reported that Lesa and Hugo Preece had just returned from a trip to Oregon.

Reports all went home last week, so we start the whole process over. The continual search for wisdom and passing grades! The kids are finally settling into the school routine; it took awhile to shake summer off. I think this is less of a problem in the North since summer goes away much faster!

It happened so fast and with very little warning. Yes, there were tale tell signs but not to the seriousness of the situation. Last week-end many world leaders were meeting, G5‘S, G7‘s, and the twenty largest world economic powers to see what they could do to prevent a world economic meltdown.

The descendents of the late Thomas J. Wash and Mary Ann Eubank Wash met on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Church of Christ Fellowship Hall in Richland Springs. Family members had an enjoyable time visiting, looking at family pictures and sharing memories with each other. At noon the family gathered for a prayer and shared a covered dish lunch with lots of delicious food.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reminds drivers that they must stop for school buses that are loading or unloading. School Bus Safety Week runs Oct. 20 to 24, and this year’s theme-Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm-calls attention to Texas state law, which requires drivers to stop when school buses are stopped and have activated their alternating red flashing lights or stop sign.

Ladies of the First Baptist Church invite the ladies of our county to the October Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon next Thursday, October 23rd in the fellowship hall, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon features “ Fall Favorites” and ladies in their 50’s are treated to the meal this month.

Findings from the newly released report on the U.S. fire loss for 2007 are available in the latest issue of NFPA Journal, the official magazine of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). According to this overview of the U.S. fire experience, fires killed one person every two and half hours last year.

There will be a special edition of the Llano Country Opry on Saturday, October 18, during the Llano River Chuck Wagon Cookoff. It will be held at the Badu Park in Llano with two show times of 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM and from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM. It is a free concert and sponsored by the Llano Memorial Health Care System and the Scott and White Health Care System. Heart of Texas Recording Artist Justin Trevino will be headlining the special opry show.

Lucy Jimenez of San Saba has earned a place on the Deans Honor Roll for the 2008 summer semester at Texas State Technical College Waco. Lucy Jimenez, a student in Mechanical Engineering Technology, is among those recognized with a scholastic achievement of a 3.5 to 3.9 grade point average for the semester. Texas State Technical College, the only state-assisted technical college system in Texas, offers specialized, hands-on instructional courses.

The Region 10 Texas High School Rodeo Association's rodeo was held October 5th in San Saba, Texas. The event had around 170 entries and was a big success. The Bosque Conservatory Art Club proudly announces their 6th Annual Art Show and Sale in conjunction with Clifton's Main Street "FallFest Celebration." Receipts totaled 1631 head for the week. With the market turning stronger towards the end of the week, stocker steers were $2 to $3 higher and stocker heifers sold $2 higher while feeder steers and heifers stayed steady. Clayton Eugene Johnson, age 55, of Lometa was found dead on October 7, 2008 at his residence. Clayton was born October 11,1952 in San Saba, Texas, the son of Kenneth Clayton Johnson and Lucille Lusty Johnson. Clayton was a rancher and also worked for both Lampasas Cattle Auction and Lometa Commission Company. A memorial service will be conducted in Lometa at Family of Faith Church at a later date.

K.W. (Shorty) McCall, 67, of San Saba, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008 in Temple Texas. He was born November 11, 1940 in New Orleans, LA, the son of Lee McCall and Opal Hook McCall. On August 15, 1977, Shorty McCall and Vivian Hamrick Reavis were married in Austin, Texas.

Linda Tharp, 67, of Elm Grove, formerly of Dripping Springs, TX. passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at her residence in Elm Grove. She was born May 3, 1941 in Blanco, Texas the daughter of Ollie Sorrell and Alma Felps Sorrell. In May 1959, Linda Marie Sorrell and Walter Tharp were married in Dripping Springs, Texas.

The Brady Bulldogs came to town last Thursday night looking for a win. The 7th grade Dillos weren't having any of that. The Bulldogs kicked off to start the game. Kelan Verette fielded the kick and returned it 18 yards. The Dillos started their drive just short of midfield. Geryn Young made runs of 5, 3, and 1 yards to bring up the 4th down.

The San Saba 8th grade Dillos controlled the Brady Bulldogs on both offense and defense for a 26-0 win at Rogan field last Thursday night. Brady kicked to San Saba to begin the contest. Russell Lowe returned the kick to the Dillo 47, Sean Argote had runs of 3,6,and 1 yard.Ryan Guidroz added 6.

The Brady Bulldogs came to Rogan Field last Friday night and left with a 34-7 victory. Three second half turnovers by San Saba changed a close game in the first half into the runaway victory. San Saba won the coin toss but deferred to the second half. Brady received the kick and started at the 26.

Cherokee ISD will hold its school trustee election on November 4th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cherokee Fire Station. Early voting for the board election will occur at Cherokee ISD administration office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. from October 20 to October 31. Place 3 will be Jed Tedder challenging Devin Everett. Cool weather has finally arrived and jackets are feeling good after the sun goes down. The Varsity Coyotes opened district play this past Friday night in Eden and beat the Bulldogs by a score of 70-24! The Varsity Coyotes are now 6-0 on the year and 1-0 in district. The Varsity Coyotes play Robert Lee at Coyote Field at 7:30p.m.

The #3 state ranked Richland Springs Coyotes defeated the Eden Bulldogs this past Friday night by a score of 70-24. The Coyotes are now 6-0 on the year, but more importantly, they are 1-0 in District 9 play. The Coyotes got off to a quick start and never looked back. Richland Springs had a total of 373 yards of offense on the night.

The Cherokee Indians played a great football game last Friday night enroute to a 52-16 win over the Brookesmith Mustangs. This gives the Indians a 1-0 start in District 13A. The Indians have moved to #11 in Sixman Division II. The Indians started the season ranked 26th. Zephyr and Panther Creek are district opponents who are ranked higher, with PC coming in at 8th and Zephyr is 5th in DII.

The JV Dillos traveled to Brady last week to take on the Bulldogs. The Dillos got back on the winning track, defeating Brady 22-16. The Dillo offense put up some good numbers with 183 yards rushing, behind the legs of Alan Hale - 80 yards, Alex Cervantez - 81 yards, and Ryan Pannell - 22yards.

The Jr. High beat Brookesmith last Thursday evening, 25-14. E.J. Borchers scored 1 touchdown run, 1 touchdown pass from Stephen Austermann, and 1 fumble recovery. Burnam Sloan scored 1 touchdown, threw 1 touchdown pass to Austermann, and recovered 1 fumble. This is the season when so many of our extra curricular groups are commencing their fund raising activities. On behalf of these groups we appreciate your participation. I wanted to let you know about a way that you can help San Saba Schools without committing extra dollars. Each of the San Saba ISD campuses are enrolled in two programs that are called “passive fundraisers”.
