The Cherokee Home for Children celebrated their 50th Year Anniversary on September 28, 2008 during a ceremony at the Church of Christ church building on the campus. Danny Duggan, Executive Director for 21 years, welcomed the group who attended this event followed by prayer by Doug Suggs. Delton McGuire, PR Director, gave a history of Cherokee Home for Children which included reading an article in the Christian Chronicle interviewing L.

Judge Byron Theodosis called to order the September 25th meeting of the San Saba County Commissioners Court. Roger McGehee gave the invocation, followed by everyone pledging allegiance to the American and Texas flags. The American Junior Rodeo Association National Finals Rodeo in San Angelo kicked off July 28th and ran through Saturday, August the 2nd. San Saba’s own Ross Williams took home two AJRA World Championship Titles. Williams led the field in the Tie-down Calf Roping and with a second round time of 8.8 seconds, closed the door on the title.

While rounding up sheep, I came across a patch of ground that has always been bare, but something was different. It was totally covered with lush green grass. It was so beautiful and I just stopped to admire it for a few minutes then I moved on looking for sheep.

Most of the folks around our parts have been very pleased with the cooler mornings, however, we’re still looking forward to that next rain. As this meager offering is in the process of being penned, tomorrow will be the 1st day of the 10th month, and most of the County is in dire straights due to drought.

Receipts totaled 2624 head for the week. The lightweight stocker cattle all sold strong with the steers selling $2 higher and the heifers steady to $1 higher. The feeder steers were $3-$4 lower and the feeder heifers were $3 lower. Packer cows were $5 lower and packer bulls were $3-$4 lower. Rep.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met September 25, 2008 for play day with the Chair for September, Sandee Hartley, calling for a game of “Mutt and Jeff”, counting only the “short” par threes and the “tall “ par fives. The winner of the game low gross went to Sandee Hartley and the winner of the game low net went to Jo Ann Snow.

Dear Editor, "Financial Crisis – Educate Yourself!" These are interesting times to live in, financially speaking. The limitations of a letter to the editor won’t do them justice and neither, it appears, will most mainstream media. With all the unfamiliar words and phrases like “derivatives,” “credit default swaps,” and “securitization” flying around, it can make the head spin.

September went by so fast that you didn’t have time to think and October will be a busy month for everyone. Just hope that it starts to rain to help fill up the tanks that are in need of water. Another beautiful week has slipped by and the race for the New Year is picking up speed! I’m not sure how the first ten months sped by so quickly but here I am looking at October again with Christmas just around the corner! I still haven’t learned to make my squares come out evenly on my quilt projects.

Andrew Fowler has been named Commended Student in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. A program and workshop on the Archeology of Central Texas will be presented on Thursday evening, October 2nd, at 7 p.m. in Goldthwaite by Tiffany Osburn, Regional Archeologist of the Texas Historical Commission. Mario and Misty Paredez of Canyon Lakes have been blessed with the birth of their first child. Madison Marie was born September 24, 2008 at 11:07 p.m. at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels. She weighed 6 lbs 11 ozs. Maternal grandparents are Richard and Katey Dawson. The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center lost a much-needed grant this month, valued at $82,000. This comes as an unexpected setback as the Center is managing a record number of child victimization cases this year. “This grant money was needed for salaries for our busy staff,” explained Deborah Keith, Executive Director for the Center.

This year the 4-H members held their Annual 4-H Banquet at the Church of Christ in San Saba. This year’s banquet was decorated in a John Deere theme and was catered by Roadrunner Catering. Every year 4-H members come together one night to celebrate and recognize the achievements of the 4-H’ers hard work and determination.

Thanks to the efforts of Athletic Director, Joel Johnson and the generous donation of numerous San Saba businesses, the Armadillos opened UIL 8AA district play with an exciting new interactive scoreboard. Not only did the crowd enjoy the Dillos victory against Dublin, they were entertained by the scrolling LED sign that featured messages throughout the game. In February of 2008, Coach Joel Johnson began his initial quest to get the Armadillos a new scoreboard at Rogan Field.

Courtney Beth Van Cleave, 22, of Lajitas, Texas, formally of San Saba, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008 in Alpine, Texas. Craig Hallmark, 57, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2008, at his home in San Antonio, Texas. Hurston Craig Hallmark was born February 10, 1951 to Raymond Hurston Hallmark and Joyce Johnson Hallmark. Craig retired this past year from the Northeast ISD in San Antonio after serving 30 years with the district.

Lenard Loid Chamberlain, 90, of San Saba, passed away Wednesday September 24, 2008, at a local nursing home. Funeral services, under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home, were held Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the funeral home chapel, with Reverend Laurance Blackstock officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed at the Zephyr Cemetery.

The Dublin Lions came to town last Thursday evening. They stepped into Armadillo country and regretted doing it. The 7th grade Dillos took care of business. The 7th grade Dillos kicked off to start the game. Oscar Villa handled the kicking duties for the Dillos. The Dillo defense came ready to swarm.

The San Saba 8th grade Dillos rolled to an impressive 42-0 district opener win over Dublin's 8th grade Lions last Thursday night at Rogan Field. The young Dillos lit up the new scoreboard with 42 unanswered points. San Saba's Russell Lowe kicked off for the Dillos. Dublin returned the kick to midfield.

The junior varsity football team was victorious in their outing against Throckmorton last Thursday. The Coyote jv won by a score of 48-0. The Coyote junior high and the varsity coyotes were both idle last week. The junior high and junior varsity will play at Lometa this Thursday beginning at 6:00.

San Saba’s JV football team traveled to Dublin on Thursday. The Dillos were in a back and forth battle all night. The Dillos dropped a nail biter 35-34. Offensively, the Dillos piled up 397 total yards. Alan Hale had 201 yards and two touchdowns for the Dillos. Ryan Pannell was 8 out of 12 for 146 yards passing and one touchdown.

Last Friday night, the Dublin Lions couldn’t stop Jack .... Whitten, that is. Whitten had 138 yards rushing on 15 carries and two scores. The Armadillo defense held the Lions out of end zone, only allowing two field goals as San Saba won the district opener for both squads, 24-6.
