Robbie, Paulie, Trevor and Skye Broyles along with Trevor’s friend Molly visited in San Saba and Cherokee this weekend. Skye participated in the Elm Grove Rodeo on Friday and Saturday night winning the barrel race and a nice new belt buckle. They also attended Paulie’s class reunion held at the Troy Gilger river cabin.

Last week we heard a great deal about Edouard. He just happened to be a tropical storm that appeared suddenly in the Gulf of Mexico. The people who lived along the coast were making all sorts of preparation before the storm hit. Households had bottled water in case the drinking water was contaminated.The houses had candles, flashlights with new batteries or lanterns to use as light if the electricity went off.

We had a little bit of rain last Wednesday. I did not have an actual measurement but it was very spotted. We were too far west, or as they say, on the dry side, of the hurricane for it to do us any good. The weather cooperated just fine for the Elm Grove rodeo last weekend.

One would imagine that most of the folks around our fair part of the Country will be pretty pleased when we’ve gotten by the midway of the 8th month. It’s easily realized that we don’t need to remind each other of the hot, dry weather but there are a couple of positive aspects of a dry season.

Receipts totaled 3609 head for the week. The market was very active with buyers being very aggressive and the big drop in corn prices, feeder steers sold $4 higher and feeder heifers sold $2 higher. Stocker steers were $3 higher while stocker heifers sold $2 higher. Packer cows and bulls remain steady in an active market. Rep.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met August 7, 2008 for the monthly business meeting and play day. The President, Anita Miles, opened the meeting with prayer. The Secretary, Hattie Rogers, read the minutes and they were approved as read. The Treasurer, Bobbie Churchill, gave the financial report for June and July 2008.

Dear Editor: I would like to commend the San Saba City Council on a recent decision by them. As reported in the July 17th edition of the San Saba News, the City Council addressed the problem of damage to the vehicle of Roberto Mendoza caused when a gate at the park hit the vehicle.

One half inch of rain fell last week, not near enough, but we will take what we can get. Promises of more rain to come late Monday afternoon. Raymond and Lewvon Hicks reported that their son, Bobby, graduated from St. Edwards University in Austin at a ceremony held Saturday, August 9.

How’s everyone holding up these days? I went to San Antonio for a week and came back to the same old hot! Couldn’t anyone get a response to a request for cooler weather? I had several messages on my recorder but they were erased. I tracked Pearl down, but didn’t get a chance to find the others.

Last week while traveling cross-country, I noticed several places that had small pecan orchards. At one orchard, I observed that the trees were full of life, with green leaves and seemingly very healthy. A little further down the road I noticed another orchard where the trees were sickly looking and dying because of lack of water.

Most parents dramatically underestimate the extent of alcohol and drug use among adolescents. Fewer than 5% of parents say that their sixth grade child has tried or is using alcohol. Yet 21% of sixth graders self-report alcohol use. The disparity is more remarkable when the subject shifts to illegal drugs. Less that 1% of parents with children in the sixth grade believe that their child has tried or is using an illegal substance.

On July 18th and 19th, the community of San Saba, and many others around us, came together to show support for Jessica Estrada. Many people wanted to help this little 8-year-old girl, who had been diagnosed with bone cancer, but didn't know how. A softball tournament was put together and to our astonishment, 11 teams were registered to play!

Chris and Delana Toups of Conroe, Texas are the proud parents of a handsome baby boy, Carson Gray, born on July 21, 2008 at 4:05 a.m. At birth Carson weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz. and was 20 1/2 inches long. Carson is welcomed home by big brother, Carter, 14 1/2 months.

The Joseph A. Vogel family held their 84th consecutive family reunion on Sunday, August 3rd, at the Senior Center in San Saba. This tradition started in 1924. There was a great turn out for the 19th annual Lindsey Reunion, held June 14, 2008, at the San Saba Community Center. This year's attendance topped out at 49 family members, friends, and guests. The Lindsey Reunion is a reunion of the children of Archie and Bess Lindsey. The group trickled in during the morning hours, enjoying coffee and donuts.

Texas AgriLife Extension in McCulloch County plans to offer Master Gardener training again this fall. Classes are scheduled to begin September 9 and will meet on Tuesdays through November 4. There will be two sessions per day, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Most sessions will meet at the Heart of Texas Museum building in Brady, but some field trips are scheduled.

This past week, Parkview Baptist Church hosted a Vacation Bible School. Bradley Cummins, a senior at San Saba High School, recently spent 20 days touring Greece/Crete and Italy with the "People to People" Student Ambassador Program. President Darrin Barker called the August meeting of the San Saba ISD Board of Trustees to order stating that all Board members were present. President Barker gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. President Barker declared a Public Hearing on 2008-2009 Budget.

The Coach-Pitch State Tournament was held in Holland, Texas, during July 21st-26th. The tournament started with the best 20 teams in Texas. Jack and Sandra Vaughn attended several of these games because their granddaughter, Alyssa Vaughn, is a member on one of the teams. She is the daughter of Brad Vaughn.
