The Capital Area Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry reported that for the first time since coming to San Saba they actually gave away all the food. On July 23, the number of households served was 118 and the number of total individuals benefiting was 317
The CAFB Mobile Pantry comes twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 10am -12 noon on the eastside of the First Baptist Church.

Cherokee ISD is accepting applications for Board of Trustees election to be held on November 4, 2008.
There are four (four-year) terms up for election. They are Place 3 held by Devin Everett, Place 4 held by Clay Perry, Place 5 held by Wayne Skaggs, and Place 7 held by Rodney Johnson.

The July 28th meeting of the San Saba County Commissioners' Court was called to order by County Judge Byron Theodosis followed by the invocation by Roger McGehee. Everyone then joined in for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. There were no Concerned Citizens present to voice issues.
The first item on the agenda was the intrAoduction of new San Saba County EMS Executive Director, Brandon Miller.

Richland Springs resident, Thomas Gibson, age 54, died last Saturday evening, July 26th, when the 1993 Kawasaki motorcycle he was driving collided with a car driven by San Antonio resident, Jonathan R. Robinson. Gibson's passenger, Sheila Gibson, age 49, was injured in the accident and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Use these preparation and storage “bites” to enjoy the abundant summer produce at its peak of flavor, appearance and safety!
Bite 1. Prevent cut fruit from turning brown.

The CIA from the Baptist Church attended Centri-kid at Sherman, Texas last week. They reported having a good time.
Kevin and Mary Randolph from Comanche visited in Cherokee on Saturday. Jaze had gone to Centri-kid and spent a week with Richard and Jerry Randolph.
Cherokee Indian Midnight Madness will start at 10:00 p.m.

The Richland Springs cafetorium hosted many events this spring. Events included the spring band recital, UIL academic awards, one-act play presentation, alumni banquet, sports banquet, 8th grade graduation, and 12th grade graduation. Thanks to all who came and supported students at these events.
Several new teachers will be employed by the district next year.

100 Years Ago
July 30, 1908
That San Saba County has a great wheat producing soil is attested by the fact that bread made from San Saba flour took all the prizes at the Fair in competition with the world. The first prize light break and also the first prize fruitcake at the Fair were made from Elite Flour.

We have had very little rainfall in the month of July and there is none in the forecast. Last Thursday evening we had over an inch here in Richland but my rain spotter at Elm Grove only received .4 of an inch. We totaled 3.5 during July last year.
Remember the Big Elm Grove Rodeo is coming up August 7,8 & 9.

Last week we were talking of the long summer’s hot days, tropical storms coming up out of the Gulf, and finally breaking past the mid-point of the summer season.
Some San Saba dwellers were fortunate enough to measure a bit of precipitation, while some folks down around the Colony, Holland Hill, the Bend, Chapel & Cherokee even measured more than did people here in Town.

Receipts totaled 1639 head for the week. The market was active with stocker steers selling $2 to $3 higher and stocker heifers were steady. Feeder steers sold $2 higher while feeder heifers remain steady. Packer cows & bulls still selling in good demand in a steady market.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July24, 2008 for play day with the June Chair, Anita Miles, calling for a game of Binga, Banga, Bongo. First on the green (Binga), closest to the pin(Banga), and first in the hole(Bongo) score a point for that hole.
The ladies had two flights of players, according to their handicaps.

Last Thursday Jolene Lively reported she received about an inch of rain, but closer to Bend the rain was less than that, being just two or three tenths.
Jesse Clark was in the top 20 in the short round and finished up in 6th place in the National High School Finals Rodeo that was held last week in Farmington, N.M..

I personally believe the grasshoppers ate the month of July, and we are owed another month! We are on track for at least 9 days over 100 this year.

Years ago I worked with a young man who was not married but he fell in love with a young girl and they got married.
A year or so later they began to have children. He loved the work we did but it did not have very good benefits especially for his wife and children.

Teens who reported that they sometimes drink alcohol to cope with anger or frustration were more likely to exhibit a range of high-risk drinking behaviors, USA Today reported December 25.
Researchers who conducted a national survey of 1,877 high-school seniors found that 36% reported drinking just to experiment, while 32% said they drank for the thrill of the experience, and 15% said they used alcohol to relax.

The Lusty Reunion was held at the Senior Citizens Center on July 20, 2008. A barbeque lunch was served to about 58 descendents. After lunch, the annual auction of family items was held.
The oldest family member was Violet Lusty Brown and the youngest was Leola Hamrick's great-granddaughter, Taylor Hopkins.

The A.J. Walker, Sr., family reunion was held on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the San Saba Senior Center. About 66 family members and friends enjoyed good food, fun, and fellowship. A barbecue dinner, made by Pete and Marsha Hardy, was complimented by wonderful side dishes and desserts brought by everyone else.

Calling all Richland Springs 6-Man youth football players and cheerleaders from ages 4 to 11. Ages 4-6 will play flag football. Ages 7-11 will play tackle football.
Practices are tentatively planned to start in mid-August. Games are tentatively planned for every Saturday morning from September through the end of October.

Larry and Angelia Bostick of Brownwood are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Alayna Lian, to Justin Bryan Reyes, son of Alex and Leticia Reyes of Richland Springs. Alayna will be a senior at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Tony and Olga Cantu were married July 13, 1968 in the St. Mary's Catholic Church in front of God, family and friends. Courtney Dawn Cummins and Stephen John Butler were united in marriage on April 19, 2008 at San Saba's First Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Crosby officiating. The bride is the daughter of David and Deborah Cummins of San Saba and the groom is the son of Sean and Debbie Butler of Norwalk, Connecticut.
The wedding ceremony was held against the backdrop of beautiful stained glass windows with a floral arrangement and large ferns.

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Brown County will conduct a deer food plot program beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Brown County Fairgrounds in Brownwood .
The fairgrounds are located on U.S. Hwy. 377 South. Interest in planting small plots to deer-friendly crops to supplement native forage is increasing throughout Central Texas, according to Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agent in Brown County.”

Elizabeth Lynn Maddox of Lometa and Kasey Christopher Mock of Kyle plan to exchange wedding vows in an August 16, 2008 ceremony at First Baptist Church in Lometa.
Miss Maddox is the daughter of Tommy and Kay Maddox of Lometa. She is pursuing a communications degree at Texas State University.

Richland Springs ISD will host a UIL debate workshop for high school students on Friday, August 22, 2008. The highly-qualified presenter will introduce students to both Cross-Examination and Lincoln-Douglas debate formats.
The fee of $10 will cover lunch and materials, and a limited number of scholarships is available. The workshop will begin at 9:00 and end at 3:00.

The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge will meet Saturday , August 2nd, at the Lodge Hall in San Saba. Members, their ladies, and OES are asked to bring a complimentary side dish, salad, bread or dessert. A beef brisket meal, provided by Past Master Roger N. McGehee, will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s annual District 7, 4-H Fashion Show was held July 22 at Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo.The theme for this year’s show was “Timeless Traditions” The event drew almost 100 members of 4-H from across the district’s 23 counties. AEP-Texas and Extension have sponsored the event for 53 years.

Alice Mae Leach, age 59, of Llano passed away July 22, 2008 in Austin. She was born October 28, 1948 in Llano to Norma (Key) Hallmark and Vonnie Hallmark. She was a lifetime resident of Llano. She married William (Bill) Leach on April 6, 1972 in Llano. Mrs. Leach was a member of Pittsburg Ave.

Jerrie Lou Startz, 79, of Odessa, formerly of San Saba, passed away Friday, July 25, 2008 in Odessa. She was born May 18, 1929 in Lytle, Texas the daughter of Louis L. Goodman and Maggie Tressie Sinclair Goodman. Jerrie moved to San Saba at an early age and resided there most of her life.

Lee Roy Eckert of Mason, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at the age of 94. Lee Roy “Giz” Eckert was born on December 22, 1913 in Mason, Texas to Lee F. Eckert and Laura Grosse Eckert. He attended school in Mason and graduated from Mason High School.

Marvin Franklin Foster, Jr., 80, of Cherokee, Texas, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his residence in Cherokee. Born June 20, 1928 in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of Marvin Franklin Foster, Sr. and Flora Lee Boone. Marvin was raised most of his life in Cherokee until 1944.

Central Texas College (CTC) will begin online registration for the central campus Fall 2008 semester on Monday, July 28. Returning students and those students who have completed the admissions process, including academic advisement and all required testing may then register using the CTC online WebAdvisor system. Fall semester classes begin August 25.
