Nathania Cisneroz, Regan Hartranft, Bonnie Hunt, and Audrey Pierce, students at San Saba High School, returned Friday from the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2008 National Leadership Meeting in Orlando, Florida, held July 14-18.

The San Saba Volunteer Fire Department used Mill Pond Park for some specialized training recently. The Department is one of the few to have the equipment and training for Swift Water and Flood Water Rescue in a six-county area. San Saba's Swift Water Team is on the Texas Task Force list of Swift Water Departments.

President Darrin Barker called to order the San Saba ISD Board of Trustees regular meeting on July 21st at 7:20 p.m., followed by the invocation and pledges to the American and Texas flags.
Retired teacher, Jane Carter, introduced the FCCLA team that she accompanied to Florida to compete in the National Leadership Meeting and won gold.

Gary & Pat Estep were here this week spending a lot of time with Skinny Estep. Clyde (Skinny) Estep will celebrate his 92nd birthday on July 29.
While here Pat was able to visit with her two sisters, Penny McCullough of Pontotoc and Helen Brister of San Antonio. They also visited with Roddy and Barbara Maddox.
There was a surprise 18th birthday party for Xazier Monroe at the Children’s Home gym last Friday night.

We have had no rain in July. We received 3.5 in the month of July last year.
There were 12 folks in attendance at the community meeting last Saturday night. Vice-president, Jerald Weatherman, presided in the absence of president, Bobby Deeds.
The gospel singing has been set for October 18th.

Surely looks like we’re still enjoying our sunny summer days in the fair Valley of the Pecan. As we were talking last week, being past the midpoint of “our” summer puts us one week closer to September.
I hear that we are into about our 3rd or 4th “Blow” out in the Gulf.

Receipts totaled 1883 head for the week. The market remains active on all classes of stocker & feeder calves. Feeder steers & heifers sold $1 higher while stocker heifers were $1 higher and stocker steers showed no change. Packer bulls were $1 higher and packer cows sold steady.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 17, 2007 for play day with the Chair for July, Anita Miles, calling for a new game of One Two Three Low Ball.
On the first hole you take the low score, on the second hole you take the two lowest scores, and on the third hold you take the three lowest scores and continue that format for the round.

Years ago, when my brother-in-law and I were farming together I found some seed in the back of the barn and had no idea what it was. We could have taken it to the feed mill and they could probably have identified it for us but we did not.
One day I decided to plant it.

Jerome and Shirley Meischen had their daughter, Ralene and her children Quincee and Blake visiting this past weekend. Their granddaughter Quincee spoke at the Bend Methodist Church about her mission trip to Jos, Nigeria Africa. She spent two weeks with the Rafiki orphanage where she taught the children. She also felt that she had learned from them.

Teens who reported that they sometimes drink alcohol to cope with anger or frustration were more likely to exhibit a range of high-risk drinking behaviors, USA Today reported December 25.
Researchers who conducted a national survey of 1,877 high-school seniors found that 36% reported drinking just to experiment, while 32% said they drank for the thrill of the experience, and 15% said they used alcohol to relax.

The descendants of George and Jessie Brister gathered on the banks of Rough Creek between San Saba and Bend over the 4th of July weekend for their annual reunion.
Those who arrived early got to help build the fence around the pavilion at Rough Creek, work on the creek crossing and close the end of the pavilion.

Matthew Barrier graduated July 18, 2008, from the San Diego Marine boot camp with the 277 members of Lima Company. He completed a 13-week training which included close order drills, physical training, academics, combat water survival, close combat skills, marksmanship instruction, and the grueling 54-hour Crucible.
At the completion of the Crucible, Matthew received his eagle, globe, and anchor which made him an official Marine.

On May 31, 2008, a beautiful garden wedding was the setting where Miss Kynda Rae Behrens became the bride of Mr. Will Britton Edmondson. Pastor Stewart Beckwick officiated the outside wedding.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Behrens of San Saba, Texas, and Mrs. Donna McGinty of Kingsland, Texas.

Anyone interested in 6-man youth football and cheerleading! I need boys and girls in grades K-5 enrolled in Cherokee ISD to participate.
K-1st grades will play flag football. 2nd-3rd grades will play tackle as well as 4th-5th grades. Practices will begin soon and will be held at Cherokee School.
Games will start in September and end in October.

Karen Maureen Collins and Leonard Lee Oliver, Jr., wish to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. Their wedding is planned for October 25, 2008, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bethesda, Maryland.
Karen is the daughter of Captain John P. Collins, Jr., U.S. Navy Retired, and Mrs. Rosemary Collins of Silver Spring, Maryland.

San Saba natives, Gene and Ruth Terry, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Emmett Eugene Terry and Velma Ruth Taylor were married June 22, 1948, in San Antonio.
Gene served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and is retired from UT-Austin. Ruth retired from the IRS Service Center in Austin.

After 10 years of high volume traffic at its Burnet-based facility, the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center received a facelift this summer, thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.
Burnet resident, Duke Williams, owner of D&W Painting (www.dwpainting.com) in Leander, recently gathered 20 volunteers to paint the interior and exterior of the Center.

Hamilton Band Boosters will host their fifth annual Lone Star Barbecue Society-sanctioned barbecue cook-off Aug. 1 and 2 in Hamilton at the Jayson Harris Pavilion. This event is the band’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Teams from all around Texas are expected to attend. Membership in the society is not necessary, everyone is welcome to compete.
Categories for the cook-off will be ½ chicken, pork spare ribs, brisket and jack pot beans and Dutch oven desserts.

The San Saba Elementary School will hold Pre-Kindergarten 3 year old and 4 year old registration on August 5, 2008 from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm in the San Saba Elementary School Cafeteria. Parents are welcome to come at their convenience between this time to register and complete necessary forms required to check qualifications.

Navy Fireman Apprentice Dakota D. Saunders, son of Teresa L. Saunders of Lometa, Texas and John S. Saunders of Lometa, Texas, and his fellow shipmates aboard USS Dubuque recently participated in a community relations project in Phuket, Thailand while assigned to the Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Group.

Roger Casco, a graduate of San Saba High School, has been awarded a CONNECTS Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year from the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University.

Frances Louise Bode, 89, of Trent Texas, passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at her residence in Trent. She was born February 18, 1919 in San Saba, the daughter of Hugo A. Bode and Henry D. Dickison Bode.
She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1935, and furthering her education she graduated from Durham Business Institute in 1940.

Hulon Doyle Egger, age 85, of Regency, Texas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. He was born January 18, 1923 in Regency to parents, Lem and Mae Jones Egger.
Hulon Doyle Egger and Anna Bell Wood were married in Alpine, Texas on June 21, 1943. They moved to Regency the following month.

Mr. Jackie Glen Williams, age 72, of Lometa, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his home. Jackie was born October 24, 1935 in Lometa, the son of Vernon Williams and Rosa Lee Smith Williams. Jackie married Margaret Nell Cooper on July 19, 1959 in Brownwood, Texas. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.
