The City of San Saba proudly presents its first "Movie in the Park" on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at dark. The City hopes this free monthly event will bring local residents closer together in fellowship through the presentation of a different family movie each month.
This month's feature is "National Treasure."

The 2008 Six-Man Texas Bowl will be held this Saturday night July 12th at 7:30 pm in Garden City, Texas. The Texas Bowl, once known as the Six-Man All-American Bowl until last year, is an invite only bowl for graduating seniors. The two teams are made up from Division I All-Stars and Division II All-Stars.

The Armadillo baseball team received more honors this past week with the release of the Texas Sports Writers All-State Team. Receiving 2nd team all-state were Sr. outfielder, John Henry and Jr. pitcher, Blake Lewis.
Receiving honorable mention were Sr. catcher, Luke Haug, Sr. first baseman Travis Hawkins, and Sr. third baseman Robert Pulatie.

San Saba High School baseball coach, Jeff Pannell, was recently honored as West Texas Coach of the Year by the San Angelo Standard Times. This prestigious award came as a result of Coach Pannell leading his 2008 baseball team to the Regional finals. Since this is only his third year as head baseball coach, this is quite an accomplishment.
Like all successful coaches, however, Coach Pannell is quick to give credit for his success to his players.

Gilbert Flores Jr. was arrested in Broomsfield, Colorado on July 2, 2008 by the United States Marshal's Service. The suspect Flores is on parole with the State of Texas and was arrested in Lampasas for Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine), More Than 4 Grams, But Less Than 200 Grams, With Intent to Deliver.

Riesen Park was the host of the 3rd Annual Motorcycle Rally throughout the weekend of June 28th. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for the Highland Lakes Area, Inc. is a non-profit organization that serves the Highland Lakes area, including San Saba County, by serving children in foster care due to abuse and neglect.

• Make it a habit to carry along a water bottle, especially if activities take you to locations that lack a water fountain.
• Either straight from the tap or bottled, water is the best choice for keeping the body hydrated.

Hope everyone got to attend the “Open House” at Cherokee Day Care. It was very impressive. Thanks to the Methodist Church for giving this to our community.
A double celebration was hosted by Bobby and Pat Ratliff at their home in Llano on Tuesday July 1st. Joel and Betty Ratliff’s 14th Wedding Anniversary (July 2, 1994) was honored, along with a birthday celebration for Joel and his twin brother, Kevin (July 1, 1974).

Miss Lillie Girvin has been elected teacher in the school at Sheffield, Texas, at a salary of $70 per month.
Tuesday morning, Dennis Sullivan loaded out four wagons with the household furniture of Judge Allison on his move to Georgetown. The family all went through in private conveyance.

There has not been much to talk about as far as the weather is concerned. We have had some nice little showers that would have added up to less than an inch of rain.
Richland Springs celebrated the 4th of July in a big way last Saturday with their annual Stars and Stripes celebration.

One might say that when it’s too hot to go fishing, it’s just too darned hot. Without going back through all the weather records, it still might go down as one of our most warm summers on record, at least for the past few years, anyhow.
We still have a bit over ¾ of our summer season to go, but I’m betting on some rain soon and that should bring our temperature down; at least for the day.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 3, 2008 for the monthly business meeting. The meeting was called to order by the President, Anita Miles, and opened with prayer by Hattie Rogers. Hattie, the Secretary, then read the minutes and they were approved as read. The Treasurer, Bobbie Churchill, with apologies, will present the July financial report next month.

McCulloch County will be offering a Master Gardener class this fall. The fee for the class is $125 for those who commit to the Master Gardener program. The training will be offered for a fee of $175 for persons who want to attend the classes but cannot commit to the volunteer service and do not desire to earn the title of Texas Master Gardener.

No weather report this week, just too darn hot and dry to talk about. Pat and Bonnie Millican recently returned from a trip to Greece. They reported the weather over there wasn’t any cooler than here.
It was reported that Rufus and Tommye Cobern had company over the Fourth, but not sure which children came in.
Robert and Spring Price and daughter Haley attended the wedding of her brother, Jonathan Grey, and LaDonna McCutcheon in Burnett Saturday night.

What a wonderful July 4th day it was! Yours truly, spouse, son Scott, wife Heather, and 5 of my grandkids, John, Jason, Kaitlynn, Dustyn and Bryson rode on a float in the parade. It was a first for all the kids and they had a blast. There was candy flying all over the place!

I could not believe it, two speeding tickets in the same day. Years ago a good friend and I were on a trip and we were having a great time visiting and I was the driver.
I did not think the speed limit was very important because it was a sparsely populated area.

Noting that alcohol “remains the most heavily abused substance by America’s youth,” acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu, M.D., M.P.H., called for government, school officials, parents, communities, and youth themselves to do more to prevent underage drinking.
“We can no longer ignore what alcohol is doing to our children,” said Moritsugu in issuing the first Surgeon General’s policy aimed at the issue of underage drinking.

Cara DeNay Lee and Brian Keith Lord were united in marriage at half past five on the evening of the 29th of March, 2008, at the Riverwood Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee. Pastor Derek Hazelet officiated the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Carlotta and David Lee of Springfield, Tennessee. The groom is the son of Lona Lord Jacoby of Brady, Texas, and the late Owen Lord.

In June, 2008, Cathi Miles had the opportunity to attend a technical lighting seminar in Austin, Texas for professional photographers. The seminar was under the direction of Maria Bernal. Cathi had the pleasure of photographing and posing Playboy Bunny, Laura Nichole (pictured above). Laura has been featured in Playboy five times.

With handover of the President’s Duties from Dina Diaz to Harold Yates, the San Saba Rotary Club begins its 81st year of service to San Saba County. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards, supports education and helps build goodwill and peace.
The Rotary Club which is the world’s oldest and largest international service club was founded in 1905.

The next meeting of the San Saba Visionaries in Preservation (VIP) Leadership Committee will be held Thursday, July 10th, at the Church of Christ at 204 Wallace St. The topic for the meeting will be landscape architecture and conducting historical surveys. The speaker will be Dr. Michael Murphy, professor of Landscape Architecture from Texas A&M University.

Mack Owen Hillin, Sr. was born January 14, 1933 in Richland Springs, Texas to Gertrude Mae Maxcey and Randolph O’Neil Hillin and passed away June 21, 2008 in Purcell, Oklahoma. He was married to Lavenia Franklin in Georgetown, Texas, on May 7, 1955, and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary.

Erbey Valdez, principal of San Saba Middle School, will join ninety-nine other principals from across the state of Texas and head to Harvard this summer.
Valdez was selected to participate in a historic leadership program organized and sponsored by Raise Your Hand Texas, an education coalition founded and supported by some of the state’s most influential business and community leaders.

The San Saba County Young Farmers will sponsor the annual San Saba Youth Rodeo on July 11th and 12th at the San Saba Rodeo arena. The rodeo will start at 7:00 p.m. nightly.
Some of the events will include: Calf Riding; Steer Riding; Bull Riding; Goat Hair Pulling; Goat Tying; Barrels; Poles; Break-Away Roping; Ribbon Roping; Tie-Down Roping; Chute Dogging; and Team Roping.
Age groups will be 10 years and under, 11-14 years, and 15 - 19 years.

Nickie Ortiz, daughter of Martin and Betty Ortiz and a student at San Saba Middle School in the San Saba Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Austin area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, July 14-18, 2008. Nickie's selection for the Academy was based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by her teacher, Judy McCoy, and her involvement in school and community activities.
