County Judge Byron Theodosis called to order the Special meeting of the San Saba County Commissioners' Court on Tuesday, June 17th at 9:00 a.m. Roger McGehee offered the invocation followed by everyone saying the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Fire Chief James Jones was acknowledged as a concerned citizen who requested a Burn Ban being enacted for the county.

During Roadcheck 2008, which ran from June 3 through June 5, DPS troopers inspected 5,824 commercial vehicles, placing 24.6 percent of them out of service for equipment violations. During the three-day campaign, 5,824 commercial vehicles were inspected, and 1,435 of the vehicles and 178 of the drivers were found to have serious enough safety violations to be removed from service.

The New York Times recently named the Texas Hill Country as the number one place to visit in its feature article “31 Places to Go This Summer.” While New York is catching on to one of the Lone Star State’s most beautiful landscapes, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) is encouraging visitors to see the Texas Hill Country Trail Region’s heritage and history.

San Saba County Commissioners have placed the county under a burn ban. Cherokee Fire Department encourages you to be safe during the Fourth of July holiday. Many fires are started from unsafe use of fireworks. Kylar Bordner was honored with a birthday party at the home of Marsha and Larry McKneely last Saturday.

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to download some pictures from my phone to my laptop. I got the phone out and turned it on. I got the USB cord and plugged it into the phone. Then I plugged the USB connector into the port and…everything went blank!

100 Years Ago June 25, 1908 W.B. Urquhart will build an addition to the upper stable and consolidate the two stables in the near future. The best news of the week is rain which we received last Thursday night. They registered from .3 to ..6 inch out at Elm Grove, while here in Richland Springs we received from 1 inch to 2.45 inches. The reports are that it was very spotted all over the county.

It had been built many years ago and was built very well. It had served many guests in splendor and grandeur. It had weathered the tests of time and faired well but there were those who wanted to tear her down and replace it with something new and different even though she still was sound and able to serve her guests well. She had been built on a good foundation, excellent materials and superb architectural design.

Last week the rain did come leaving about half an inch of moisture, but a lot more is needed. The water hoses or soaker hose will be in use to keep the gardens going. It is so hot during the day that the plants look like a blow torch had hit them, they are so wilted.

Praise God the rains came! Some of us received over an inch; others, unfortunately, received little more than a tenth. Every drop is precious, but in this dry, hot, windy weather, that tenth hardly hits the ground before it disappears! I guess we better keep praying for some relief. I spoke with Doc Fisher; he had just attended the Commissioners’ meeting in San Saba.Several things were decided amongst the Commissioners; the burn ban is back on was the primary decision.

The Oliver family and friends met at Harmony Ridge on June 7th and 8th for their annual reunion. A genealogy group met Saturday, followed by a Harmony Ridge Cemetery Association meeting. A fried fish meal was served after the meeting; 80 family members enjoyed the great fish dinner. Then on Sunday morning, the group met for a devotional and business meeting.

Colorado Bend State Park has added two new staff positions and purchased new equipment, thanks to increased funding provided by the Texas Legislature. The Freemasons of San Saba Masonic Lodge will meet Saturday evening, July 5th, at the Lodge Hall in San Saba. Age, race, or station in life does not matter in The Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA). Curley Lipson (see picture), age 86, is a WWII veteran from Gorman, Texas. He is a member of The Heart of Texas Son Riders in Brownwood, Texas. Curley rides his motorcycle each month from Gorman to Brownwood for CMA meetings.

Mack Owen Hillin, Sr. was born January 14, 1933 in Richland Springs, Texas to Gertrude Mae Maxcey and Randolph O’Neil Hillin and passed away June 21, 2008 in Purcell, Oklahoma. He was married to Lavenia Franklin in Georgetown, Texas, on May 7, 1955, and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary.

Margaret Bales Ratliff, 96, formerly of Kingsland, died June 14th in Austin. She was the daughter of Marvin B. Bales and Lillie Templeton Bales, of Lone Grove, Llano County, Texas. All things considered, our fair valley of the Pecan was pretty busy this past weekend. Everything started off pretty good for the weekend with most areas around the County getting some moisture during the latter part of the week. Daddy’s gauge measured just a smidgen over .5”, while Jr. reported about ¾” up the lane from China Creek over toward Fairview.

Receipts totaled 3026 head for the week on a choice offering of cattle. The heavier feeder steers and heifers all sold steady to $1 lower. The lighter weight stocker steers sold $3 to $5 lower with stocker heifers selling steady to $2 lower. Packer cows sold $2 higher and bulls sold steady. Rep.

Lee Hudson Murray graduated on May 9, 2008, from Texas A&M University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Murray is from San Saba. The graduation speaker was Eric M. Bost, U.S. Ambassador to South Africa. Among his responsibilities is overseeing President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which provides treatment to more than 2 million South Africans infected with HIV/AIDS.

Morgan Gilger and Ross Williams of San Saba held off the competition to make a pretty good showing in the Team Roping at the Texas High School Rodeo Finals in Abilene Texas last week. Lucy Jimenez of San Saba earned a place on the Dean's Honor Roll for the 2008 spring semester at Texas State Technical College Waco. Jimenez, a student in Media Communication & Information Technology is among those with a scholastic achievement of 3.5 to 3.9 grade point average for the semester.

The annual July 4th festivities will be on Saturday, July 5th. The parade will begin at 5:00 at the Church of Christ and proceed down Aztec street. A hamburger supper will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. A hamburger, french fries, dessert, and drink will cost a mere $5.00.
