The San Saba Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting June 9th for their newest member, Boney & Claud's Country Store. The store, owned and operated by Larry and Dana Sanderson began operation September 1, 2005. Hand-dipped Blue Bell Ice Cream was added in May of 2008. The store specializes in a variety of food products, with emphasis on pecans, both raw and flavored, as well as many pecan related items.

The City Council of the City of San Saba, Texas convened for a called meeting on Tuesday, June 3rd at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and Shawn Oliver gave the invocation, followed by everyone joining in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American and Texas flags.

The City of San Saba announced today that its customers can expect higher prices for electricity in the coming year, beginning as early as July. LCRA officials are considering raising current electric rates approximately 1 cent per kilowatt hour in response to an expected fuel rate increase. The LCRA will ask its Board of Directors to raise its electric rates to keep up with rapidly rising natural gas costs.

The City of San Saba will be applying for a CDBG grant from the state. The grant will be used to upgrade the city's waste water treatment plant. Securing the grant will be of great financial value and will supply the city with a very cost effective solution for our citizens.

Every year we honor the senior class and their families with a meal and we give the seniors a Bible. We try to give them a study Bible that they will be able to use for years to come. A few years ago I had a young adult ask me if we still gave Bibles to the seniors.

We are still waiting, hoping and praying for some rain. Every day gets a little dryer with this hot wind blowing. The 42 tournament will be this Saturday night in Richland Springs. The community meeting will be held on the 21st and Marilyn Suber and I will be the hostesses.

There is not a whole lot that has changed since my meager offering of last week’s edition, but we’re still getting our share of summer. Receipts totaled 1900 head for the week. Packer cows and bulls all sold steady on a very active trade. Feeder steers sold $1 to $2 higher and feeder heifers sold $2 to $3 higher. Stocker steers sold steady and heifers sold $1 to $2 higher. Bred cows and pairs sold steady to $50 higher. Rep.

The news has dried up and blown away with all the wind that blew all last week. The winds have made some of the pastures look like a blow torch has been applied to the grass. The gardens are having to be watered just about every day to keep them going.

I hope everyone has had a great first week of vacation. I’m sure my students have been having a ball! It’s always strange the first week school is out. You miss everyone, but you still like to sleep in and just do whatever comes your way. Boredom has not yet had time to set in to your routine. The word boredom brings to mind the change in the First Baptist VBS schedule.

Yes, there are many like our United States soldiers that are fighting for our country. There are many other unsung or unnoticed heroes, but one group from the list is fathers. Next Sunday will be Fathers’ Day and we celebrate it every third Sunday of June. They may not be in the headline news or possess great wealth but he shows up for work day after day and brings home a paycheck week after week.

6-Pak held its annual fishing contest June 5th through June 8th. Over 500 lbs. of fish were donated to the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department for their upcoming fish fry. Liveoak, across the street from the Courthouse in San Saba. The San Saba Garden Club met the first Tuesday in May at 11:00 with President Nancy Nelson presiding. There were many lovely gardeners there to hear the speaker, Mr. Clay Nettleship. Mr. Nettleship was gracious enough to outline plans concerning the work in and around the Burden Hotel in downtown San Saba.

The annual Richland Springs' Stars & Stripes Celebration, which is held the first Saturday of July, will be in full force once again this year. The Celebration committee received a $2,500 donation from the Richland Springs' City Council that will go towards the event's fireworks.

Judge Theodosis asked Kenley Kroll for the invocation, followed by everyone standing for the Pledge of Allegiance to the American and Texas flags. San Saba, Texas –– The task forces of San Saba’s Visionaries in Preservation (VIP) program will report on their progress and strategize on their next steps on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church. VIP is the community planning program of the Texas Historical Commission (THC). VIP asks residents how they want their community to look and feel and provides the necessary tools to help San Saba retain its identity and sense of place as it grows and changes.

The descendants of the late James W. and Hattie Mallett Stewart held their annual family reunion on the weekend of June 7th and 8th, 2008 in San Saba. On Saturday, a hamburger supper with homemade ice cream was held at the home of Doris Cates with 33 in attendance. Some friends of the family visited also. Arturo Hernandez was born in Lometa, Texas to Yldifonso Hernandez Sr. and Manuela Hernandez. He resided in San Saba most of his adult life before relocating to Falcon, Missouri with his wife, Beth, for the past decade or so. Eugene Warren Hall was called to our Lord on April 18, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in San Saba County, Texas on June 20, 1937, the son of Fred and Lela (Anderson) Hall. He married Kathey Light on May 9, 1958 (they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 9th this year).

Jack V. Gates, 84, of San Saba, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 in San Saba. He was born May 3, 1924, in Mart, Texas, the son of John Thomas Gates and Ardelia Mitchell Gates. In 1943, Jack Volley Gates and Amie Wallett were married in Bakersfield, California. She preceded him in death in 1995.

Martha Ellen Sims Terry passed away June 7, 2008 in Austin, Texas at the age of 66. She was a resident of Austin for 47 years. Martha was a member of the Hyde Park Baptist Church for 46 years where she worked with children’s programs and most recently cared for toddlers in the Hyde Park CDC.

Norma Louise Eckert of San Saba, formerly of Slaton, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the age of 90. Norma was born on October 15, 1917 in Haskell, Texas to Edward and Ibera Anderson.
