On Tuesday, May 27th at 5:00 p.m., the City Council of San Saba met for a "called" meeting. The meeting was called to order by Stan Weik, City Manager. There were no citizens present for Public Comment. The following Action Items were discussed and approved: 1. Resolution 2005-15 authorized the City to enter into an agreement with TxDOT to close Wallace Street/Hwy 190 on June 21, 2008 for the rodeo parade; and 2.

The San Saba Armadillos ended a great 2008 season this past Saturday at Brownwood, playing in the Regional Championship for the first time in school history. The Dillos faced a familiar foe in Grape Creek, the District 6-2A champion. On Thursday, the game was played at Foster Field in San Angelo.

There was a large crowd for the fish fry for Marvin Foster. The food was delicious. It was nice to be able to visit with Marvin and Pat. Bonnie Johanson recently broke her hip. Bonnie resides in San Saba Nursing Home. David and Sabra Roberts from Plano visited with Wardell and Jane Randolph. We would like to welcome Mr.

While flying home from our vacation last week we saw some beautiful sights. It was cloudy as we were flying home and some of the clouds below us were beautiful. A couple of times we flew into the clouds. When we did, the sun was blocked out and we could not see the ground below.

100 Years Ago June 4, 1908 The counties of San Saba and Llano have united in a joint Normal to be held in Cherokee, 16 miles south of San Saba and about 18 miles north of Llano in a fine, large and well constructed three-story building with about 15 good size rooms in a high, clean, pleasant location with good shade and surrounded by good citizens that will entertain all attendants at reasonable low figures, within the reach of all. It is hot and dry! That is the way it has been for the past two weeks and more of the same is in the forecast. We only received 2 inches in May compared to 10.5 in May last year. We have started yet another new month. Can you believe the year is almost halfway gone?

Those of you that like & look forward to summer should be fairly happy as of late. We’ve certainly been experiencing our share of soaring summer temperatures out around our parts. Any time the mercury surpasses the century mark, it’s a bit too warm for my likes and comfort. True to form, there are a couple of advantages to dry, hot weather.

Several weeks ago I saw a documentary on how they made magnets and how magnetism affects materials. They were even making super magnets by electronic charging of different materials. One demonstration included a globe a little bigger than a basketball suspended in mid air and turning around slowly much like the earth rotates.

Receipts totaled 623 head for the week. Feeder steers sold $2 higher and feeder heifers sold $1 higher. Stocker heifers were $1 higher while stocker steers sold steady. Summer is getting an early start this year. All last week was fairly warm, and Sunday was just down right hot. No rain is forecast for this week, but maybe some will be working its way to us before too long. Belle Marley’s granddaughter Vanessa is at the Marley home recuperating from her gall bladder surgery this last week. The family of Dennis and Glenda Scroggins are going through some tough times right now.

Hurray! School’s out! I can hear the happy shouts of kids and teachers as the summer break starts. Mind you, many teachers have multiple courses to take over the summer, so the “break” isn’t quite as long, but break it is. It’s been a tumultuous year but successful. TAKS are in, and Richland maintained its status, and even gained a few points in some areas.

The Baggy Bottom Boys will be providing the music for the Church of the Open Door on June 8, 2008. The band is coming all the way from Ft. Worth to sing, play, and worship with the folks of San Saba. Some of the songs and music is of their own creation and some are good old-fashioned gospel hymns. Pastor Bruce Craig, along with the congregation, wishes to extend a warm welcome to everyone.

Archie Rutherford, 93, of San Saba, passed away Friday, May 30, 2008 in Abilene, Texas. Archie was born April 19, 1915 in San Saba County, the son of Dee Rutherford and Balzora Whitley Rutherford. On June 1, 1940, Archie Rutherford and Winnie Mae Barker were married in San Saba County.

Joe (Manuel) Campos, 86, of Brownwood, formerly of San Saba, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008 in Brownwood. He was born March 14, 1922, in Post City, Texas, the son of Ygnacio Campos and Porfiria Perez Campos. In 1946, Joe Manuel Campos and Emelia Reyes were married in Brownwood, TX.

Patsy Crockett, 67, of San Saba, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008 in San Saba. She was born May 10, 1941, in Richland Springs, Texas, the daughter of James Walter Land and Hettie Inez Justice Land. On January 10, 1964 Patsy Ann Land and Roger Crockett were married in Richland Springs.

Rayford Howard Brister, age 67, of Lometa, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Rollins Brook Community Hospital in Lampasas. Mr. Brister was born December 25, 1940 in Lometa, the son of George Tom Brister and Velma Johnson Brister. He lived all of his life in Lometa, and he graduated from Lometa High School in 1959. As a young man, Rayford worked for Potts Wool and Mohair.

Thomas Glyn McCarley, 84, left this life for the next on Sunday, May 25, 2008. He was born May 5, 1924 in San Saba County, Texas. In 1944, he married Anna LaJoy DeShane prior to being deployed to the Pacific theater in World War II. He achieved the rank of sergeant (E4).

Richland Springs presented the 2008 class with diplomas at graduation ceremonies. Bob and Mary McLean were guest speakers for the ceremonies and gave graduates advice on what it will take for them to find success. Scholarships to graduates totaled $18,200. Project Graduation activities were held at the school cafetorium and ended at 5:30 a.m.

May 31, 2008 the San Saba Golf Course was an array of white balloons and ribbons and all the trimmings for the wedding of Keith Harris, our golf pro, and Crystal Bauerschlag. The bride was escorted in a beautifully decorated golf cart across the bridge of the 18th hole along with the children of the couple and presented to the groom on the 18th hole green where Bro.

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Leigh Riggs from San Saba has been recognized as a student of excellence in English. This is a prestigious honor very few students can hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes fewer than 10% of all American high school students. Richland Springs native, Laurie Slone, received honors at Howard Payne University (HPU). Slone was named to the President’s List for the spring semester of 2008. Students must earn a 4.0 grade point average to be named to the President’s List, a 3.65-3.99 grade point average to be named to the Dean’s List, and a 3.5-3.64 grade point average to be named to the Honor Roll.
