It didn't happen this golf season or even this school year. It has taken years of preparation and dedication for Megan Cisneroz to achieve the things she has wanted from a game she loves so much. The countless hours she spent trying to develop the perfect swing and the thousands of golf balls she hit at the driving range has paid off for Cisneroz. The San Saba High School senior signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at Angelo State University.

San Saba earned its third straight 2-game sweep of a 3-game series Saturday, whipping the Hawley Bearcats 11-2 in the class 2A regional quarterfinals at Morris Southall Field. San Saba’s offensive production in clutch situations continued Saturday with seven of the runs coming with two outs.Travis Hawkins had 3 RBIs, with a 3-run 6th inning blast that sealed the deal.

On Tuesday, May 13th, at 5:00 p.m., the City Council of San Saba conducted a planning session in regards to the 70 acres of land located west of town owned by the city and also discussed the selling price of the 11 remaining lots in the Allison Sisters Subdivision which the City currently owns.

On May 9th, the San Saba High School Band traveled to the tip of Texas to compete in the South Texas Music Festival in South Padre Island, Texas. The band, under the direction of Jason Howard and Emily Andrews, made the 8-hour drive down to the Island on chartered busses from San Antonio, arriving around 5:30 p.m., which gave them enough time to check into the hotel and spend some time on the beach before sunset. Summer’s coming, the kids are home, and who is going to fix their lunch? In some cases, youngsters can handle some food prep, but their abilities and experience in the kitchen greatly influence kitchen safety. Helping in the kitchen is a great beginning for youngsters wanting to learn to cook.

Monica and Samuel Baisden and Tiffany Suggs were in last weekend to visit Doug and Cyndi Suggs and to attend a party in honor of Sheila Pitcox, fiance of Jeremy Suggs. The party was in Fredericksburg. The Cherokee Church of Christ hosted a dinner for the graduating seniors of Cherokee High School Sunday evening.

On the Internet a while back, I read a story about a little boy who showed great courage. This little boy had a sister who needed some blood. His blood was the right type and he would be used as the donor for his sister, which he was glad to do.

100 Years Ago May 21, 1908 The storm Saturday night at Richland Springs blew R.A. Brown's house off the pillows and wrecked it considerably. He got help and placed it back Sunday morning and the storm Sunday night blew it off again. The house was uncoupled and was in a condition to be moved easily. The Cherokee section was visited by good rains but no hail Sunday evening. The house occupied by Cal Wood between Richland and Velma was almost demolished.

It happened so fast while we were trying to pen a little bunch of sheep. A young man that was helping us was riding a horse that was well fed and had not been ridden in a while. He made a mistake in that he spurred his horse and went charging off.

We had 1.6 inches of rain out at Elm Grove and 2.6 inches here in Richland Springs. Saturday was a perfect day for the Homecoming picnic. There were a lot of people there but I don’t know how many signed the register. The “Country From The Heart” band was there and provided music throughout the day.

Have you ever happened to hear someone say, “Boy, we’ve surely been having some weather, lately”? Seems kind of a no-sense saying to me, but the general intent is understood. In other words, we are always having "some weather,", just that some is more catastrophic than at other times. We were a bit more lucky than some surrounding areas last week, with some of our neighbors getting hit pretty hard.

Receipts were limited to 635 head for the week due to the rain. Feeder steers sold $1 to $2 higher while feeder heifers showed no change. Stocker steers and heifers sold steady. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association held their annual Four Lady Spring Pecan Classic Tournament on May 17, 2008. This tournament was sponsored by the City National Bank of San Saba, Texas. The City National Bank has sponsored this tournament for several years and the ladies are most appreciative of this generous gesture.

The rain did come last week and just in time as it was badly needed. Reports of more than four inches were reported with some small hail which didn’t seem to do any damage. There was some much needed run off to the tanks that were beginning to be low.

What a marvelously hectic week! I hope no one received any serious damage from those wonderful but violent storms! Talk about an answer to prayer; we received 1.7 inches of rain, our small shed blew over and we lost a few tree limbs. Still, praise God we had rain! School will be out in a few weeks and I hope we can all make it!

The American Junior Rodeo Association is coming to San Saba on May 30th and 31st. Performances will start at 7:00 pm each night. Categories will include Bareback, Saddlebronc, Bull Riding, Tie Down Roping, Girls Breakaway, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, and Pole Bending. A special AJRA Alumni Match Roping between Terry Kitchens and Keith Hudson will be available with a 10- head winner take all on Saturday night.

The GED test will be given at Gatesville High School on June 10-11 in Room 22. To be able to take the test, you must register on Wednesday, June 4th, in Room 22 at Gatesville High from 5-7:30 p.m. To register, you must bring your Texas driver's license or state or federal photo identification, Social Security card, and $65.00.

San Saba City Manager Stan Weik will be the featured speaker at the Lunch & Learn on Wednesday June 4th at noon at the Civic Center. Weik will discuss his vision for San Saba. The program, sponsored by the San Saba Co. Extension Education Clubs and the Family & Consumer Science Committee, is open to the public and free.

On May 29, 2008, at the Llano County Extension Office, the training necessary to obtain a private applicator's license will be presented by Jamie Osbourn, Llano County Extension Agent. This training will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and include the noon meal. The $40.00 registration fee also includes study materials and reference manuals.

On Sunday, May 11th, San Saba Nursing Home residents, their family members, and nursing home staff kicked off the week long festivities with a balloon send-off at the home. Along with kicking off National Nursing Home Week, they also celebrated Mother's Day. They released 50 balloons which were a variety of beautiful pastel colors.

Funeral services for Myrna Rae Maynard Lewis, 82, of May, were held on Friday, May 16th, in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Tony King officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early. Mrs. Lewis passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008, at her home in May with loved ones by her side.

On Monday, May 8th, the Freemasons and Order of Eastern Star hosted their annual Seniors Banquet for the 2008 class of seniors of Cherokee and San Saba high schools. Over 70 people were in attendance and enjoyed a fine meal of fried fish, fries and hushpuppies furnished by Richard Smith.

The Stephen F. Austin Men and Women Track and Field Teams wrapped up the 2008 Southland Conference Outdoor Championship on Sunday, May 11, in Huntsville, Texas. The Jacks scored 83.5 points to place 5th overall and the Ladyjacks scored 124.83 to place 3rd overall. Justin Reyes, a 2004 graduate of Richland Springs High School, now a senior at SFA, scored points for the Jacks in the high jump, clearing 6-10 3/4.

The Summer Reading Program of Rylander Library begins Tuesday, June 3rd from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the library. It will continue on every Tuesday in June. All school aged youth are encouraged to come to this free program. The purpose of the program is to encourage youth to read.

San Saba County 4-H will be holding a dog dip/rabies clinic on Saturday June 7th at the Centex Fertilizer & Feed on Highway 190, east of Richland Springs, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Charles Key, DVM with San Saba Animal Hospital will provide the rabies shots. The shots will be $10.00.

The San Saba High School Alumni Association held it’s third annual golf tournament May 17, 2008 with approximately thirty players participating. The Association would like to make this an annual event that you will mark on your calendar and perhaps plan your class reunions around this date. The annual meeting was held at the Elementary Cafeteria that morning with the fun golf tournament following in the afternoon.

San Saba natives Laura Blossman and Kayla Murray recently graduated from Howard Payne University (HPU) in Brownwood, TX. Blossman earned a Bachelor of Science degree and magna cum laude honors. Murray earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and summa cum laude honors. Students must have a grade point average of 3.55-3.69 to receive cum laude honors, a 3.70-3.84 to receive magna cum laude honors, and a 3.85-4.0 to receive summa cum laude honors.
