On Wednesday, April 16th, the San Saba County Sheriff's Office Dispatchers had a potluck dinner in recognition of "911 Telecommunications Week." Nationally, Congress voted April as "911 Telecommunications" month. The 911 Dispatchers recognized and honored were: Brenda Willis, Mary Terry, Becky Starr, Cindy Williams, Mona Dickerson, and Estella Soto. Mary Terry was given her five-year pin for service to San Saba County.

We think of our bones as solid and unchanging. However, our bodies use the calcium in our bones like a bank and constantly make deposits and withdrawals. We take our bones for granted but we really need to take care to keep our bones strong and dependable all through life.

Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind all residents that even with some of the recent showers and the burn ban being lifted, the grass will still burn. Please check the weather, humidity and wind speed prior to burning. Cherokee VFD ask that you call the San Saba Sheriff’s Office and let them know that you are going to burn.

In the news lately we have heard about some cases of child abuse. The month of April is child abuse awareness month. One of the big stories being carried across the world is of those who were taken from the compound in El Dorado. Child protective services went in after receiving a complaint of sexual abuse.

100 Years Ago April 30, 1908 There is no way to estimate the damage to San Saba County farmers from the recent flood. It is true the only damage from high water was in the Colorado bottoms. All the bridges on the Colorado are damaged, more or less, and just when the Red Bluff and Goldthwaite bridges can be put in condition for use, no one can tell. Tuesday, B.D.

We had 1.1 inch of rain out at Elm Grove over the weekend. It was greatly appreciated. Only 7 people showed up for the cemetery meeting at Holt Cemetery last Saturday. There was some illnesses reported and I guess just a lack of interest from some others. If you cannot attend the meetings, please send your donations to Pat Nehr, 29, CR 416, Rochelle, Texas 76872.

Sara Perry (long jump), Miguel Rocha (3200m run), and Hector Jimenez (400m run) competed in the Region 4 Track Meet in Huntsville last week. TAKS testing is this week. Wednesday is basically Math, Thursday is basically Science and 9th grade Math, and Friday is basically Social Studies. Tuesday, May 6th, at 3:15 is the PTC Teacher Appreciation Ice Cream Social. May 8th is the date for the THEA test.

Everyone woke up Monday to some very cool morning temperatures, in the lower 40’s, but much needed rain also came in with the front. Nearly 2 inches was reported from different ones around the Bend. There were also some reports of hail, not in Bend but some places in the county had enough that it was stacked up in places. This is the time of year for birthdays and birthday parties.

I was working in the mountains of Mexico with some Indian people and it was a beautiful day. After talking to some of the men about the Bible, I went on down to the river. As I sat on the riverbank a drunken man from the nearby village staggered up to where I was sitting.

The Commissioners' Court meeting on Monday afternoon, April 28th, was called to order by Judge Byron Theodosis, followed by Roger McGehee with the invocation and the pledges to the American and Texas flags. There were no concerned citizens to report any issues. San Saba's Megan Cisneroz shot 70 on both days, April 21-22, of the Regional Golf Tournament held at Shady Oaks in Baird to capture the Regional Golf Title. Teammate Shelby Hardy shot 70 and 77 to capture 3rd Place. Kendra Whitley of Wall shot 70-75 to take 2nd Place. The Lady Dillo Golf Team took Second Place at the Regional Tournament to earn a bid to the State Tournament at Roy Kizar Golf Course on May 5-6, 2008.

June 8-14, 2008 will be the 5th annual Mission San Saba service project. Each year, volunteers from around Central Texas come together for a week and provide a local family with needed repairs on their home. This year, Mission San Saba volunteers will spend their week at the home of Carl and Dorothea Casbeer.

Several months ago, a group of home schooling parents joined together to form a support group called San Saba Area Christian Home Schoolers. This group has many activities including park days, field trips, and Mom’s night out. A sub-group called His Helping Hands has been recently developed for the purpose of serving the community.

The Shiloh Bible Church of Richland Springs has scheduled a special service this Sunday, May 4th, to dedicate its new facility. Pastor Ramsey states the congregation will celebrate what the Lord has done! Pastor Ramsey added, "It is marvelous in our eyes, and we are thankful. The Lord has used our church family to bring into existence a facility that is totally debt free.

Eddie Fulcher, 52, of Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of San Saba, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008 at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. Eddie was born July 1, 1955 in Houston, Texas, the son of Thomas Lee Fulcher and Agnes Alvera (Peggy) Debo. He is survived by one brother, Lee Roy Fulcher and his wife, Cindy, and their two sons, Jesse and Tyler of Weed, California. The Armadillo track team had a great showing at the District track meet in Ballinger on April 7th. District Champions included Gary Gant, Ryan Plumley, Devin Moreno, and Kevin Socha in the 800m Relay. Regional Qualifiers included: Justin Barker-Pole Vault; Devin Moreno-Triple Jump/400m relay/800m relay; Kevin Socha-100m/400m relay/800m relay; Ryan Plumley-400m relay/800m relay; Luke Haug-400m relay800m relay; Gary Gant-400m relay/800m relay; and Diego Gonzales in the 800m and 1600m run.

Two Lady Dillo Tracksters competed at the Regional Meet this past weekend in Abilene. Haylee Oliver cleared 4’10" to finish 10th in the High Jump and Danessa Vasquez ran a personal best of 5:36 in the 1600 to finish 4th in a very tough field. Danessa beat her district competitors from Wall and Ballinger in the race as well.

The San Saba High School Alumni Association will hold its fourth Annual Meeting at the Elementary School Cafeteria on Saturday, May 17th at 10:30 AM. The meeting will include reports from several committees as well as the election of directors and officers. The meeting will be followed by a luncheon catered by Larry Daniel.

The San Saba Middle School Tennis Team played in the Brownwood Invitational on April 26. The tennis team came home with eleven medals. Joannah Crosby won first place in 7th Grade Girls Singles in B Division. Kolton Haverland won second place in 7th Grade Boys Singles in B Division. Lauren Dawson won third place in 8th Grade Girls Singles in A Division.

Texas career and technology education students and community leaders were recognized Monday, April 21, 2008, at the annual Best of Texas Awards Ceremony. Courtney Womack, FFA member at San Saba High School, was named the Best of Texas Outstanding Agriculture Science Student runner-up. A cash scholarship and commemorative plaque was presented to winners and runners-up in each division.

The San Saba Tennis Team took five girls and two boys to the regional 1-AA Tennis Tournament in Abilene on April 23-24. In Girls Singles Tayler Hibler came in second place and this qualifies her for the State Tournament on May 5-6. In the round of 16 Tayler defeated Mary Nell Subia from Reagon County 6-3, 6-0.
