Please be advised that under the Governor’s Disaster Declaration any outdoor flame is clearly and totally prohibited. This prohibition includes prescribed burns, agriculture burns, and/or welding. The Governor’s Proclamation will be in effect through March 2nd of this year and it is almost certain to be extended unless significant rainfall is received.

On Monday, February 25, 2008, the Office of Rural Community Affairs (ORCA), a state agency, presented an oversized, ceremonial check to San Saba County, which received a Disaster Relief grant of $301,246 from the agency for the 2008 Community Development Block Grant funding cycle.
The county shall use the grant as a 25-percent match to funds provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to address road damage caused by flooding in June and July 2007.

Monday afternoon a big birthday celebration was held for Elo Henniger at the Lampasas Nursing home and Rehab Center. Sylvia Stinnett baked the cake, LaNell Daniels brought the ice cream and Lola Morris made the punch. His daughter Lucille Underwood and her friend Waymon from Austin were among the many relatives and friends that were there to celebrate his 97 years and to wish him many more.
Sunday afternoon Bob and Doris Poe dropped by the nursing home to wish Elo a happy belated birthday.

The Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ Youth group spent the weekend on the Cherokee Home for Children Campus. They spent time in God’s Word, fellowship-ping, playing and eating. It was a good weekend for all.
Danny and Janiece Duggan are in Ohio visiting Jared, Kim and grandsons. They will be there two weeks.
Xazier Monroe, Judy Fairchok and Talli Morrison took their hogs to the stock show in San Angelo, Texas on Tuesday.

In the movie “My Girl” there is a young lady who is friends with a boy who we would probably describe as a Geek. They were only 11 years old so it was not a romantic movie. He was allergic to everything. Everything! One day he is looking for a ring that she lost and a bee hive they had knocked on the ground still had bees in it.

We have registered .7 inch of rain so far in February. The wind has blown so hard it has taken away most of the moisture. I did see some Algerita bushes blooming so I guess we can say that Spring is on the way.
Remember the gospel singing on March 15th at 7:00PM at the community center.

They are known by several names like Giant Redwoods or Giant Sequoia and they do not grow just anywhere. They are the largest trees in the world by total mass. They may grow to a height of 150 to 280 feet tall and have trunk diameters of 16 to 23 feet.

It’s February in Texas and the weather roller coaster continues to be a wild ride! Will March come in like a lion or like a lamb? Will my new peach blossoms make it through March or will they be killed by a frost?
I don’t know what the weather people say but my trees say winter is over for them!

Do Well, Be Well, diabetes education classes will be held each Monday in March beginning March 3rd, 5:15 to 7 p.m. at Rylander Library. The classes, sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service–San Saba County are free and open to the public. Sessions include:

Bill Christian, 82, of Canton passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2008, in Terrell, Texas. He was born February 10, 1926 in Richland Springs, Texas, to Thomas Calvin and Bertha Pearl Warren Christian.
Bill grew up in Richland Springs. He met and married Helen Mazey Groves in 1950 in Crane, Texas, where they resided until 1961.

Wesley "Wayne" Hardman, 75, of Brownwood, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2008. He was born August 13, 1932 in the Holt Community, the son of the late Wesley and Mattie Hardman.
Wayne moved to Brownwood in 1972 from the Holt Community. He was a retired fireman for the City of Brownwood and worked a number of years for Davis-Morris Funeral Home as an assistant.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met at the home of Pat Ribb for games on February 21, 2008 due to windy winter weather. Bobbie Churchill, Jo Ann Snow, Dorothy Sterner, Jo Anne Hardy, Sandee Hartley, Hattie Rogers, and Nell McHorse were present for the fun and fellowship. The ladies had lunch together and I understand the big winners of the day were Sandee and Nell.

The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees met for their regular scheduled meeting on February 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
Board members present were Kim Kirk, Angela Johnson, Elmo Davis, Marcie Maxcey, Darrin Barker, Bob Whitten and Susie Nettleship. Staff attending included Leigh Ann Glaze, Ashley Stewart, Joel Johnson, Dave Underwood, Bruce Tabor and Erbey Valdez.
Under student recognition, the Dilloettes were recognized for wining three trophies in their recent competition in Round Rock.

“Own Your Own Future” empowers Texas teens to take charge of their lives through education!!! Own Your Own Future is a student outreach campaign to encourage Texas youth to stay in school, graduate, and pursue their passion was recently launched by the Texas Education Agency through a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates.
