County law enforcement organizations presented 911 programs to the Cherokee, Richland Springs and San Saba Elementary Schools on December 17, 18 and 19. The programs were offered to over 200 students through cooperation between the Central Texas Council of Governments, San Saba Police Department and San Saba Sheriff’s Office. Joanna Serrano, an 11th grade student at Cherokee High School, received 1st place in an essay contest – “How Telecommunications has Impacted My Life in Rural Texas” - sponsored each year by Central Texas Telephone Cooperative, Inc. Joanna wins an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC and will join 100 other 11th grade students from rural areas all over the United States.

The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month for December 2007 is the home of Richard and Betty Gibson at 806 South Liveoak in San Saba. Betty is from San Saba, and she and Richard moved here about four years ago. They like to work and keep busy. He brought in good dirt for the flowers and shrubs and they both enjoy working together in the garden.

Doug and Cyndi Suggs have had two week-ends with family. Last week-end Monica and Samuel Baisden, Tiffany and Jeremy Suggs and his friend Sheila came for an early Christmas. This week-end Sydnie and Payton Suggs and Ali Hager came for another Christmas. The children at Cherokee Home have really been blessed with Christmas parties.

My printer needed a new cartridge the other day. Don’t you get frustrated when you are printing an important document and as you get to the end of it the printer needs a cartridge? I have printed many documents that are incomplete because I did not have enough ink. On my printer, when you replace a cartridge, you must run an alignment page to make sure it is printing correctly.

We have only received .3 inch of rain in December. That brings our total for the year to 46.5 inches compared to 20.9 last year. It was 22 degrees at my house this morning with a heavy frost and it has been very windy. Bobby and Helen Deeds had a houseful of company for Christmas including their three kids, Bobby, Brenda and Benny and their families.

Well the weather outside has been frightful like the song said, not snow just wind, lots of cold wind. Everyone seemed to weather Christmas just fine and are now looking forward to the New Year. Happy New Year to everyone out there! Some of the Christmas events that went on in downtown Bend was that Hugo, Lesa Preece had a get together at her home Sunday for children that used to attend her day care in Lampasas.

Cosme (Cosmo) Diaz, 36, a resident of San Saba, Texas passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007 in San Saba. He was born September 19, 1971 in Penn Yan, NY the son of Carlos Diaz and Yolanda Muniz Diaz. In April 1995 Cosme Diaz and Sylvia Juarez were united in marriage in Miami FL.

James Sterlin Smith James Sterlin Smith, 60, died Monday, December 24, 2007 in Tulia, Texas. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 27, 2007 in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ernie McGaughey, retired Methodist minister officiating. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia.

On Tuesday, December 18, the Armadillos went to Comanche to take on the Indians for one more tune up before district play. The Dillos won the contest 49 – 45. The Armadillos were led by John Henry, who had 19 points, and Travis Hawkins, who had 12 points. Also scoring for the Armadillos was: Ross Williams – 6, Daniel Cisneros – 5, J Miles – 4, Robert Pulatie – 2, and Derek Sears – 1. At the end of the first quarter, the Armadillos were down 15 – 12.

All youth are reminded to begin preparing their entries for the San Saba County Youth Fair January 17th & 18th. All school age children can participate. Categories include: Art, Craft, Educational, Food, Poster & Photography. Any item made since last year's youth fair may be entered. Entries will be accepted from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
