Thursday, November 22, 2007 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., a free Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Father’s House Fellowship Hall in San Saba. There will be turkey, dressing with giblet gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and hot rolls topped off with various flavors of homemade pies.

The City Council of the City of San Saba, Texas convened into a called meeting on Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 at 5:00 p.m., in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 303 S. Clear Street. Monday, in honor of Veterans’ Day, students and local veterans gathered to share breakfast at San Saba Elementary School. Over 20 area veterans and their guests, San Saba ISD Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze; Assistant Superintendent, Ashley Stewart; Principal, Bruce Tabor; School Counselor, Kathryn Robertson; Elementary staff, teachers and 289 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten to 4th grade participated to help make the occasion a special moment for all to remember.

Stephanie Bowden Russell from Austin visited Flora Bowden last Friday. She was on her way to San Saba to watch the football game. Her brother, Brad Bowden is the head coach for Grape Creek. Roger Wisdom had surgery at the Heart Hospital in Austin last week. He will be going back in a month for some more surgery.

Parents, I do believe we have a reason to be concerned. The reason to be concerned is something called Myspace and its counterpart, Facebook. These are both web sites that anyone can go to and put anything they want on this site. It is a place where friends meet to discuss the happenings in their lives and what they are doing. This site is one that is very private, however.

We are getting in need of some rainfall since we have not had any in the month of November so far. The Richland Springs Coyotes defeated the Rochelle Hornets last Friday night by a score of 60-14 to take the district championship. They now play Lometa this Friday night at 7:30 in San Saba for the bi-district title.

Certain sections of the landscape are trying to take on some of the hues of Autumn, but many of the trees and shrubs are hanging on to their warm-weather apparel. As of this writing, we still have not experienced an official frost in our fair valley of the Pecan, so, the longer the trees can keep their leaves, the better they will come out in the spring.

November 8, 2007 Receipts totaled 3617 head for the week. The buyer attendance and demand was strong with the feeder steers and heifers all selling $3 higher and the stocker steers and heifers selling on a steady basis. There was a lot of buyer interest on all the weaned cattle that were offered.

Still waiting for the rain which is badly needed. The pecan gathering is in high gear. The Bend Community Meeting will be Saturday, November 17 at 6:30 and the meal will be covered dish. Everyone is asked to bring a dish and/or a dessert. After a business meeting games will be played so bring your favorite game.

Can you believe Thanksgiving is almost here! Reports cards come out next week, and Christmas decorations are already showing up in stores and on houses. It always seems as if time speeds up in November and doesn’t slow down until March. At any rate it has been a great week.

The Beveridge Suspension Bridge has won the National Steel Bridge Alliance Prize Bridge Competition Merit Award. The Beveridge Bridge is an historic parallel wire suspension bridge located in San Saba County, Texas on China Creek Road over the San Saba River, just northwest of the city of San Saba. Built in the late 1800s, the bridge was eventually closed due primarily to the deteriorating main cable.

If you have a pecan taste treat your family and friends love, show it off at this year’s Pecan Food Show, which will be held at the courthouse Friday morning, December 7th. The registration time, 7:30 – 9:00 a.m., is early so you can bring your entries to the east side of the courthouse on your way to work or school. The annual Pecan Food Show has been a San Saba County tradition since 1956.

Displaying the American flag on major holidays and special occasions, plus the Armadillo High School flag on Football Fridays, has been a proud tradition in our community for over 17 years. The Rotary Club of San Saba offers the citizens of our community the ability to join in that proud tradition during 2008 and to demonstrate the community pride and spirit that has always characterized San Saba.

Harold Yates, San Saba County Deputy, community leader and rancher is announcing his intention to campaign for Sheriff on the Republican ticket in San Saba County. Harold is a long term resident of San Saba County. He joined Humble Oil and Refining in 1971 following receipt of bachelor and masters degrees in engineering with honors from the University of Texas at Austin.

Florinda Guerra, 55, a lifetime resident of San Saba, passed away Monday, November 5, 2007 at her residence in San Saba. She was born January 30, 1952 in Acuna Cuidad, Mexico, the daughter of Isabel Guerra Calameo and Arminda Valdez Rosalez Guerra. She attended the Catholic Church. She is survived by four sons: Lazaro Alvizo, Robert Alvizo, Manuel Alvizo and Martin Vega, all of San Saba; two daughters, FlorAna Alvizo of San Saba and Anjela Vega of San Angelo; seven grandchildren; four brothers ...

Joanne Powell, 68, a life long resident of San Antonio, Texas passed away Wednesday November 07, 2007 in her home in San Antonio. She was born June 05, 1939 in Aubrey, Texas to Henry Hoarce Odom and Margie Jane Walters Odom. On June 23, 1956 Joanne Odom and Melvin Powell were married in San Antonio, Texas where they made their home.

John Henry Prewitt, 69, a resident of Hamilton, Texas, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2007 in Hamilton. He was born February 21, 1938 in Llano, Texas, the son of George William Prewitt and Willie Mae Crumley Prewitt. On September 12, 1961, John Henry Prewitt and Frances E. Hunter were married in Llano, Texas, where they made their home and lived most of their lives.

Richard F. Stengel, 71, of Holt, passed away at his ranch on Monday, November 5, 2007. He was born March 20, 1936 the son of Edward and Christine Stengel in Rhineland, Texas. On July 27, 2004, Richard and Donna Selman were married in Medina County, Tx. Richard was a distinguished member of the US Army pistol team until his honorable discharge in November of 1960.

The San Saba Armadillos won their final game of the season over the Grape Creek Eagles 28-7. Senior John Henry led the team with 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He completed 8 of 11 passes for 134 yards and two more scores. The Eagles tried to control the clock to keep the Dillo offense off the field by not snapping until five seconds were left on the play clock.

The Richland Springs Coyotes claimed their 6th straight District Championship this past Friday night by defeating the Rochelle Hornets by a score of 60-14. This was a much improved and very good Rochelle Hornet team. They should have a lot to be proud of. The Hornets were a determined and focused team that took the Coyotes into the 4th quarter.

The Cherokee Indian’s season came to an end Friday night with a hard-fought loss to the Lometa Hornets. The 6-40 loss was not indicative of the way the game was played. The Indians were able to move the ball against a much larger Hornet team, but failed to find the endzone until the end of the game.
