Hello, dearest San Saba loves! Boy oh boy, I feel as though mom and I moved to an alternative universe for two weeks or we were inadvertently cast members on an old television show she told me about, The Twilight Zone. We know you guys were in one of the episodes with us, but wait until you hear about the first bout of total weirdness!

Our yard is completely opened to the street so mom always walks me on a leash when we go out. One morning, for my first walk of the day, we go out, and as we round the back of the yard, mom sees something lying in the side yard. Not knowing what it is, but knowing no matter what it is, my dachshund self would want to explore it from one end to the other, she steers me away, brings me into the house and goes out to investigate.

Well, surprise of all surprises, in the middle of town, there in our yard was a pristine looking fresh out of the water, catfish! My mom was born in Galveston, swam the beaches since she could walk, never minded when fish nibbled at her, such withstanding, she has never enjoyed nibbling on them, or even the smell of them! Knowing fish cannot walk, mom was worried someone of malcontent might have left it to harm me, or perhaps send us a strange, convoluted message, so she notified authorities. Chief Bauer and Jason were ever so kind, but decided it was a home deposit from another animal. Um, mom and I aver it must have been a toothless one. By the way, do not wait for mom and I to open a sushi restaurant; that will never be happening! We may absolutely love you guys, may even love seeing fish swimming around in their natural environment, but fish out of water…nope, not ever!!

Okay, shall we address the weather insanity? On what planet is it 90 degrees one second and then the next, copious amounts of ice rain falling from the sky, winds blowing enormous garbage cans through yards as though they are scraps of paper, and creating lakes in yards? Oh wait, planet Texas!! I am not frightened of thunder one bit, however, find the sound of hail on a tin roof a bit much, have you noticed how prominent a dachshund’s ears are? Mom and I were sitting on the couch during all of it, and she was telling me about the hurricanes she went through in the Houston area. I smiled at her and said… “I think I will call this storm a ‘him-I cane’.” She asked me why, and I said … “because it was raining golf balls, and the wind threw out the garbage!” Um, mom did such a strong eye roll I thought her eyes would never go back in place!

I learned something in all the upheaval; feeling safe is not about the building that surrounds you but the love with which you have surrounded yourself. Mom felt ill at ease seeing that fish out of water in our yard and so she guided me away from it. The hail and wind were a bit overwhelming, but we found safety in each other’s company. We care about and love the city of San Saba and therefore do our best to offer our best to everyone we can. Mom and I hope you have a wonderful week…love, Lenny.
