And the heat goes on…and the heat goes on. Some of my trees are beginning to turn brown. I hate to think we are going to lose more big trees again this year, but unfortunately, it is looking that way. My rancher friends are hurting. Our deer herds are struggling, and unless you are irrigating, there will be no second hay crop.

I heard the Chase Pecan Company fire made the national news. The rest of the world will see what a great job our local fire departments do handling large fires. With the land as parched as it is, it is important that everyone watch their outdoor activities. We always have nice winds around here, and a careless fire will cause widespread damage before it can be put out.

The first football game is this Friday. The players from High Island will be traveling the long distance to compete. The First Baptist Church will have the usual Fifth Quarter meal for all players and community members. Since the High Island folks will be so far from home, they will also be invited to eat. Come out and support our super Coyotes. The ladies volleyball team will be in Ballinger for a tournament on the same day. Good luck to all our Coyote athletes.

Monday the 28th is the big back-to-school bash for the Wednesday Kids’ Church program. All students from K-5th are invited to the city park from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There will be bounce kingdoms, baby pools, games, popcorn, hot dogs, and a fun time will be available for all. Please put the date on your calendars. Wednesday church will start on Wednesday the 30th. The Wednesday event needs more volunteers, so if you are looking to interact with our local kids and attend a local church, come, and see where you can help.

The school is a little short on substitute teachers this year. Although you don’t have to have a college degree, you must pass security clearance and be able to keep students under control. Several other schools in the area are having the same issue.

I have been substituting this week for several teachers. I love being with the students, but I don’t like the early rise and long days.

The four-day week is good in one way, but the longer days get tough around 3:30 p.m. I guess I’m getting old. We do have wonderful kids though.

Our ex- mayor, Johnny Reeves, and his wife Lynn are back from the big city. He is doing well after his cancer surgery.

Hopefully, we will have him back in fine form soon. Jean McKee is spending time with Kay McKee after her recent hospital visit. Coach Ethridge is facing some serious health issues and needs our prayers.

There are many others in our area that are fighting serious health issues. Many are fighting financial issues as our cost of living goes up. Please pray for rain, for our country, our government, and our first responders. Most of all pray for our precious troops at home, at the border, and around the world. Pray for their families as well.

Welcome to the new school year.
