From the San Saba News & Star Archives 110 Years Ago May 7, 1914

Mrs. J. H. Kavanaugh returned from San Antonio, where she visited relatives and saw the Battle of the flowers.

One of the pleasing events of the season was the entertainment given by Miss Greenwoods’s expression class at the Burleson Opera house. A full house was present and enjoyed every number to the fullest. Many expressions complimentary of the ladies work were heard and all agreed that the hearty applause was well merited.

S. A. Masey has bought a new Ford car from the San Saba Auto Co., and is now “burning the breeze.” He has promised the Star man to take him joy riding but we are going to wait until he gets the critter gentle.

James Ellis is the champion fish catcher of this community, at least. Last week one night he got to the house all out of breath and a little the worse from excitement, told his father that he has a whale and could not land him and to come quick and help get him out. Well they got the fish out and it tipped the scales at 55 pounds.

Squire Coughlin brought a freak in the chicken line to the Star office last Monday morning. The chick hatched and had four perfectly formed legs. As “drum sticks” are a popular part of the anatomy of a frying size chicken if the Squire can breed his stock up to this multiplicity of legs he will no doubt do a land office business in the poultry line.

A petition is being circulated asking the county judge to call an election to decide whether an additional 15 cents shall be voted by the Richland Springs school district. This would give us an eight or nine months school.

Lawrence Cattes and his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Wolk, of Houston were spelunking with Bob Linzey of San Saba in Mrs. Bob Linzey’s South Canyon pasture. They enlarged the opening to a cave and got down some 30 feet but a shear drop stopped their exploration until they contacted Thos. Sloan and got a 16 foot ladder which just made the drop passable. A wet cave was found with much water formation.
